Wow, what was that official looking at?  He was right behind Darnold as the defender tried to do a 180 with his head.  Not one official saw that?

As a Packers fan, I should enjoy watching this happen to the Vikes.  But I know our turn will come.  Every team in the league will get screwed by the officials at some point this season.

Not to say that the NFL is scripted, but if it (truly) wasn't, then that gets called.  Especially when a less than borderline play gets called in a Chiefs/Bengals game that effects winning or losing.

As a Steelers fans, that was fine in terms of overall placement, but it was total crap on that night at Arrowhead

Right now it's being scripted by the 'Stroud writer'. *tm Tom Grossi.

That grab happened so fast, we couldn't tell in real time.  Only slow mo made it clear.  And Darnold was off on many throws 2nite that the Vikings likely wouldn't have tied it up.

I knew a safety was coming anyway.   Darnold was not getting out of that end zone.

Bad calls are part of the game, just like the weather.   You play the game so the bad calls don't hurt you.   The Vikings had to settle for a field goal instead of a tD.   Maybe that TD changes the whole vibe of the game in the Vikings favor and the Rams never regroup.   Or maybe there's a reason Darnold is on his 4th team.

I agree, even if the call had been made, the Vikes still had to go about 80 yards to score in less than 2 minutes without any timeouts and get a 2 point conversion.  Minnesota should be focusing on their offense only getting 2 field goals in the second half and how their secondary allowed Stafford & the Rams to carve them up.

I do appreciate that the Vikings didn’t gripe about that call like others would have. Darnold said that they shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place, and the coach stated one play doesn’t lose games. It was nice to see.

I have a question for all the football buffs on this forum.

Does the money making machine (aka National Football League) :

1) Employ the absolute worst referees in the history of sports

or

2) Referees are just following instructions  to enable the league to manipulate the game towards desired results.  Desired Results=$$$$ for themselves or for their partners- the sportsbooks.

Just something to think about.🤔

It does seem like there are a lot more blatantly bad calls since the online betting sites have been up. And some of them are definitely affecting the outcome of games.

It's gotten so bad we now have the refs being employed by the networks to comment on calls during the games are saying WTF was that.

But, I do think certain teams get the benefit of the doubt (Patriots when Bellicheck was there, Chiefs w/Andy Reid).

100% agree and it really makes watching their games a chore.

I'm not (so) sure I should care.  For instance, if teams like Kansas City (and New England previous) are benefiting at a level that hinders the other 31, I'm not sure why The Powers That Be within the franchises puts a stop to it.  Not so much teams that totally suck, but contenders.  Especially given the fact that the head of those contenders has the head or non-player face of the NFL as one of their employees.  As mentioned, it's a 60-minute game.  Outside of the instances where horrible and one-sided officiating takes place, maybe try to rout someone

First only one position is the referee.   The others are things like "line judge" and "back judge."   The referee is just the head of the whole officiating crew.

Second, officials come up through the ranks, you start coaching youth, then high school, then college, THEN, if you are good enough, you get a tryout at the NFL.   So to say they aren't well-trained is a disservice to the literal decades of time they have put in to becoming football officials.

Third, no one talks about all the calls they got right in a game.   How many calls were there in this one game?   Football moves fast, officials are human and can't see everything going on at once (one of the reason there are so many officials, so that someone might be in a position to spot something).   Even in this game where an official was "right there."   Yeah BEHIND Sam Darnold so couldn't see the Rams player actually grabbed the face mask, not any other part of the helmet.   And it is only grabbing the face mask that is the penalty.  Which is going to happen unless you assign two people to watch every single player every single second of a game, one to watch the front and one to watch the back.   Even then things will be missed (what really goes on at the bottom of a pile out of sight?).

I think we are more hyper vigilant about "bad" calls because we have the benefit of so many camera angles that the officials on the field simply do not have.   Sure we could review every single play to make sure nothing was missed and allow everything to be challengable -- if you want games to be 7 hours long.  It's a trade off, good enough when getting to perfect is impossible.

I guess I'll never forget Aaron Rodgers turning his head against Detroit nearly a decade ago, but I can't recall this second whether the defender touched the face mask or not.  I do not believe he grabbed it to where it was a definite foul.

Decent points on the officiating.  Nobody compliments the officials, at least most people don't.  My issue is that games are close a ton, and I suppose the league and company want that.  Fans in a way really want that as opposed to turning off the TV over a blowout.

With a close game comes a questionable call that can make the difference between winning & lose.  With that fact comes my issue on people often complaining about the refs costing someone a game, but not the actual players that also made mistakes in the same game.  Several to be honest.  Maybe play better in your contest, and a bad call will not factor in the final outcome

I hate the whole the season is scripted bs. Every team gets bad calls. Nobody is perfect.

You should watch Tom Grossi's 'Scriptwriter' series on YouTube.  The references, the villainous characters, the comedy, Wildflower aka WFT fan)...  He's really funny and creative using only his house, the 'screaming' street, a robe and a notebook for props.  Oh and 'flag'.

To understand the Stroud arc, you have to watch last season and the 'Strouds' (Texans) beef with the moon.  LOL

I mean sure, that would be the calm, rational approach.  But come on, fans love to get outraged about everything.  Call goes against your team?  The game is rigged and we're victims.  Call goes for your team?  Everyone thinks we're getting favorable treatment, so it's us against the world.

Long time radio announcer for the Cleveland Browns, Jim Donovan, lost his battle to leukemia.

He was a beacon of light in many years of mediocre to bad - and some good - seasons of football.

I was expecting this when he has to retire last month aft his cancer came back, but still....

FUCK CANCER

For way too many years, Jim was the ONLY reason to follow the Browns.  Terrific play by play and an incredible sense of humor to help take the sting out of the team's ongoing mediocrity.

They actually do want close games.   The whole "on any given Sunday thing."   Because when the AAFC started with the Cleveland Browns (yes them) the Browns were so dominate no one bothered to come to the games.   Who wants to pay to go see a game when you already know who will be the winner?   It's why the NFL, after sucking in the Browns*, realized fairly equally matched teams make for better ticket sales (higher tv revenue).   One of the reason** Bert Bell proposed the whole  worst team gets first shot at better players thing.

* - Fun fact, once the Browns joined the NFL, they lost the championship game twice -- to the Detroit Lions.   Yes them.

*** Other reasons was Bert Bell also owned the Eagles and his team sucked, he hoped to personally benefit from having first shot at good players.  Now we have a Commissioner who is employed by the teams, but not a member of any one team, to avoid that conflict of interest.

(Sorry folks, you got me on history of football streak this weekend.   Oh and despite my defense of officiating - #DezCaughtIt).

Last season after instantly losing Aaron Rodgers the Jets were 4-4 after 8 games.  This season with him they're 2-6.  Congrats, Jets fans!

New York will have to run the table (basically) if someone cares that Brett will have had a better record as a Jet with less to work with and a less offense-friendly era

When Jayden Daniels launched that Hail Mary pass and Noah Brown caught it, I jumped off the couch to celebrate, danced--and almost twisted my ankle.😅

I wasn't sure the best emoji to give you here, so I felt like it was best to comment.  That final segment was freaking awesome!

Hope you are well, but these outcomes are rare, so it's nice to see them play out.  Especially since Daniels wasn't 100%

The Cowboys are now losing 20-10 to the 49ers in the 3rd Quarter. HA HA HA!!!! I hope that Jerry Jones is squirming right now.

And from there, the architect for the D-Wade statue can make a perfect replica to honor the Cowboys "legend".  Yeah, a Jerry Jones statue that looks like Colonel Sanders.  Not sure how they'd build a statue where some old guy is looking through a window suite, starting down dejected and all

Just saw a stat that Dak Prescott is the first Cowboys QB since 1992 to have 2 o more interceptions 3 years in row since 1992.   that would be Troy Aikman.

I thought, not Quincy Carter, not Tony Romo.   Then I had to go look how many starting  QBs there were since 1992.   They are:

Troy Aikman

Quincy Carter

Chad Henson (wow forgot him)

Vinny Testaverde for a year   (really forgot him)

Drew Bledsoe (who was around longer than I thought he was.  He was available because he lost his starting job after he got hurt and lost his job to a 6th Round Pick from Michigan, didn't care enough to look up what happened to that guy, then fDrew was floated through a couple of teams before landing in Dallas.   I once called him statuesque and it wasn't a compliment)

Tony Romo

Dak Prescott

That's it.   not bad for over 30 years.   Too bad its resulted in no Super Bowls since 1996.

In no way, shape, or form was I rooting for Dallas here.  Not a big Niners fan either TBH, but it sure felt like both teams were saying no thank you to winning.

I'll be honest, as it feels like San Francisco is "back" or whatever, I think I'll definitely throw up if they get to the end before losing in the Super Bowl (to Kansas City).  As for the Cowboys, the only way they're super bowl bound is if people plopped in VHS tape of Jimmy Johnson era stuff OR if the Chiefs changed their name to the Cowboys.  That's it.

Realized I posted in the wrong thread

LOL...It happens.  At least it can happen.  At least it was still in the sports section of the website!

IIRC, a couple years ago around the time was either a live MLB game or news related to football, I was talking Survivor, and somehow my post from the CBS show ended up in the baseball or football thread
