I go back to "no small feat given how the character in question was originally written off the show" so I can't see it being Cristina. Cristina coming for a visit would be easy to write especially with Meredith injured.  I would love to see Sandra on the show again but I don't think it will be now.

 Yes, I agree.  i didn't mean to imply that blind item was about Cristina, as she could come back basically at any given time without it being weird.  I just meant to say that I would love to see her back in general.

I don't think any old characters/cast members will be returning to Grey's any time soon. I do wish they'd bring back Addison, Teddy, etc for an episode or two. I too think it's Josh Charles/The Good Wife. The showrunners are leaving at the end of the season on that show, and it wouldn't surprise me if they want to bring him back one last time before finishing up (their part of) the story.

Yeah. It also can't be Teddy, Izzie, Addison, it would make perfect sense if any of them popped up at some point. You'd think it could be one of the long list of dead people on the show, but there's really no obstacle why they wouldn't appear as a ghost or a giant floating head because why not. 

 

So that leaves us with... Erica Hahn. She's reappeared from the parking lot black hole!

Oh my, they are losing it. But can you imagine it? A surgeon with just one arm? Woah!

But if you think about it if Meredith is now missing an arm she can start a club with Arizona: Amputated Surgeons! The name is catchy

It would be quite a drama,but they have already done the amputated limb storyline with Arizona.

 

But the promo looks nerve-wrecking,such a brutal attack,I feel in pain just watching it.

 

It seems to me Amelia will be the one who could have prevented the attack or maybe she knew the attacker,maybe another alcohol addict just like her.Maybe she knew him from the AA group.

 

I also thought that Riggs might be the one who would fight the attacker and stop him from attacking Meredith,then treating her, but he is nowhere to be seen, it is Penny who finds her, but he seems to be among surgeons who are treating her - At 0:20 is it him or Alex standing there?,Maggie is there for cardio, I thought Riggs would be involved in this to start off their possible romance.

Yes, I would also be for Teddy to guest star, I liked her in the storyline with Henry, I didn´t like her especially when she had the drama with Cristina as a surgeon but also the whole dreadful love triangle in S6, I  never really got what she saw in Hunt. Plus how whiny she was over him or the flashback episode to Iraq hospital camp and her in full make-up and the image of a war trauma surgeon which she presented (maybe the actress failed here) did not really fit in with the way I imagined such a character would be like or behave,but maybe it´s just me,she was simply not  enough hard core for me. But I did like her and Henry, their romance,and how Raver acted the scene when Teddy came to see Henry dead,then the tension with Cristina and the final scene between Owen and Teddy after she left in SF8. 

 

But if she came again,I do not see the reason why she would at all. To see an old friend Owen maybe?

I know Kim Raver wanted to leave, but it was one of the more unbelievable things to me that Teddy would still up and leave after finding out about the plane crash. But that's being nitpicky over something that was out of Shonda and the writers control.

 

I don't watch Supergirl, so I don't know how involved Chyler Leigh is on it, but is it possible it could be Lexie in a dream sequence, or something? I mean, it would be dumb given all the other sister stuff they have now, but just a thought.

there were rumors of flashbacks from Jackson and April's wedding coming up...maybe that's what the church is for? i think Sarah Drew said that either 10 or 11 were big for Japril so that fits.

I wish they let Penny just be a one-episode thing, for the 250 episode. That was a great installment, but she serves no purpose now. I do have some hope though - I think if they intended to make her regular, they would have announced it when they announced Giacomo's promotion.

My impression was that this Meredith attack is happening for the sole purpose of Penny saving her in some way since she didn't save Derek.

Grey's is nothing if not annoyingly predictable. And it's only a matter of time before both Meredith and Amelia embrace Penny with open arms, who has got to be one of the most unappealing character additions in the show's history.

The fact that they're apparently putting Meredith through more hell just to prop up Penny, a character very few people care about much less want to keep on the show, is extremely frustrating.  Do TPTB think that by 'fixing' the issues between Penny and Meredith/Amelia/Callie etc, that viewers will somehow magically warm to her and want the character to stick around??  After a couple of episodes, it was pretty evident that the character was not resonating.  Giving her massive screen time and fully integrating her into every aspect of the show is not going to make it better.  

 

Shonda has always said she 'doesn't have a real plan,' that she lets the chemistry/story go where it does naturally but this character is a glaring example that that is not the case.  Penny's large screen time is taking away storyline possibilities from every other character on this already cast-heavy show.  There's only so much time per episode and using it on a character no one cares about is just such a waste.  

 

Hell, I'd gladly watch more of Bailey and Ben arguing about end-of-life decisions or Owen screaming at people over Penny forcefully becoming the new cool kid on the block.

I don't know what's happened since, it almost looks like they're making her be this dull and listless on purpose. That's a matter of opinion. For me, I didn't understand why that episode focused so much on a random one-off character during such an important episode. I would much rather have had that screen time go to Amelia finding out about Derek, or something of the like with his family.

 

It's just like with this season, where I would much rather see the screen time and character/doctor story development go to the residents the show has been employing for 3 seasons now: Jo, Stephanie, and Ben.

I agree that they could have just as well written her off the entire episode but I suppose they wanted to make a silver lining about the whole situation and show that Derek's death was at least going to help someone become a better doctor. It wasn't necessary but it could have been OK as an one-off.

There was no need to bring her back and especially not in some kind of a redemption storyline as it frankly just isn't that interesting and secondly, she has nothing to redeem herself for, it's not her fault Derek died.

Maybe Penny's "saving" will be limited to her finding Meredith? The press release came out today:

Meredith is brutally attacked by a patient, and Penny is the one who discovers her. The doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial rush to stabilize Meredith and remain by her side in the harrowing aftermath.

I know its likely pointless but I'm hoping that at least it will be the people closet to Meredith that help her through. That's how it was the other times she died/almost died.

I wonder what's up with that plane?

One armed, one eared Meredith is in another plane crash for February sweeps? (I'm kidding, in case its not clear).

 

We're supposed to find out more about Owen's sister in 14 aren't we? Maybe Owen or Riggs goes looking for her and there's a scene on a plane. The park could even tie in, it could be where she is or something.

I totally agree.

 

I saw the episode and I was pleasantly surprised by quite a good performance as you said of a competent yet timid and inexperienced doctor, I did some research on the actress, I hoped we might see her again and was so excited about her actual presence on the show as it was announced but the minute she got back, I was unpleasantly surprised,like who is this character and who is this actress?

I think the writers will borrow  Ben´s storyline from Off the map series where Henderson´s character´s wife was in a vegetative state on life support. McKidd keeps emphasising it is not clear Owen´s sister is dead,so it is still possible she can be in a vegetative state of coma. It would mean the writers would just take Ben from Off the map and bring him to Greys world as Nathan (the only difference being Ben worked as a trauma surgeon in the jungle) and make Ben´s wife Owen´s sister.

Yes, 12 seasons on with a show here and there, you can´t always be original to say the least. 

 

Well, if this is the case, then I think Nathan is childless as Ben because he and his wife´s child died in an accident.

 

I am inclined to believe maybe like you do that Owen´s sister and Nathan´s wife?? is not dead.  Martin did have  some nice acting moments especially in those scenes related to his character´s wife fate in the other series.

I would definitely take that possibility over my initial assumption of her being a relative (mother?) of Penny's that we would be meeting for no real reason.

Heck, they could say she's Penny's mother and Owen's sister, and have another weird family thing to keep her longer.

I think Zola only spoke briefly in 11x21 when Meredith asks her "who can never be late?" and she replies "surgeons, but that was the previous actress who played her. Apparently Zola scenes have been filmed this season but ended up being cut.

 

I don't think that actress (Jaimie Rose) is playing Owen's sister. This is pretty paranoid reasoning but she posted heaps of photos from set during filming and if she was playing such a mysterious character I think they would have told her to keep it quieter for the big reveal. In general Shonda hates spoilers but they are being especially secretive with this Owen/Riggs stuff. After the accidental reveal of Samantha Sloyan's return earlier this season with that bts photo, that was quickly deleted, they might try to be more careful.

 

Also the actress is 56, so while certainly still possible that would mean a big age difference between her and Riggs (Martin Henderson is 41).

Yeah, I think the red headed actress is playing a patient's family member. In one of the photos she posted, she's with an older man with his head wrapped in a hospital bed. And Penny and Amelia are in her pictures as well, so it looks to me that Penny is on Amelia's service and that woman is part of their patient case.

I'm pretty sure that new Zola had lines in the first episode she was in, having a conversation with Meredith on the night before Christmas.  It was the post-Derek death episode when time jumped and we found out that Meredith was pregnant at Christmas just after having a conversation with Zola about how her new sister wouldn't be the present for Christmas that year (and she stood up from kneeling at Zola's bedside, revealing to us she was pregnant) and new Zola concluding the conversation by saying she missed her dad.

I don't think we know for sure, but @jchambersonline usually has a lot of info and I read this info there.

I second your question. Why is Penny even there? It doesn't make sense! Why is a resident being treated like an intern?

Based on this picture I assume Jo will be working with Callie and Maggie. I think it could be interesting.

Perhaps I'm being naive but I feel like this new arc is going to be very exciting. At least as a Meredith fan.

LOL, of course it does. Alex will be the "person" and the sister gets the good surgeries and relationship story.  The only things that will ever free Alex are if a) Cristina returns (which won't happen) or b) Meredith is in a new relationship & will go back to ignoring him. Miggs or Mowen '16 are what I'm shipping!

The more information I read about the next few episodes, the more confused I get.  Last season the majority of the overloaded cast was completely ignored and timelines and semi-established storylines got completely dropped or changed, while a handful of characters (2 of them absolutely brand new) got the majority of screentime.  After all of the drama and turmoil of the last season, we get only 8 episodes and a nearly 3 month break.  The last episode left on quite a few cliffhangers (Amelia drinking, Alex's proposal, Jackson's response to April and Owen and Nathan), yet only the Owen/Nathan one has been addressed in spoilers.  But our first episode back appears to be a completely out of the blue different storyline that has absolutely nothing to do with where we left off nearly 3 months ago.  (And I won't even get into how ridiculous and overplayed I find that particular storyline to be).   I had hopes for episode 10 because, seriously, they actually set something up for other storylines, but again the synposis addresses not one of the cliffhangers, except Owen/Nathan.  I don't get it, I really don't.  

 

I realize that some of this is out of Shondaco's control, and that we still have two weeks until the premiere, and that the episode descriptions don't always reflect what we actually see, but does any of this seem off or just bad planning to anyone else?  Is it just me?   I am trying my best to give them the benefit of the doubt, and hope that all of this serves some kind of purpose for characters other than Meredith, but at this point, it doesn't look good, at least not anytime soon.  And that makes over 2 years since my favorite characters have gotten any kind of real storyline. 

 

The only thing I am actively rooting for is for Jo to pick a mentor and kick ass as a surgeon, so that I can bear her scenes again.  I don't care anymore if she and Alex get married, break up, cheat or enter into some kind of polyamorous union with Meredith and the ghost of Denny.  I have given up on Alex ever getting anything to do that doesn't involve someone's else more important storyline, even though he is second billed at this point, or on Jo and Alex as a couple to have any of their issues (which are interesting to me and have not been utterly played out on this show, IMO) explored with any depth at all.  My absolute biggest hope is that Justin Chambers leave at the end of the season and then maybe I can enjoy watching him elsewhere.
