S03.E17: This Just Ain't A Good Day For Leavin'

Recommended Posts

With this show it's not out of the realm of possibility that the FBI are investigating prostitution but I'm hoping Teddy's hooker had something else going on that made them interested in her and by giving her money Teddy is linking himself to the bigger crime.

As boring as Teddy's storyline is I can accept it if it's leading up to a temporary exit and a bit of a revamp for the character when he comes back late next season.

Gunner and Scarlet (plus Avery) sing so pretty together that I want the Triple Exes to stick around but ugh Gunner needs to turn his attention elsewhere, his interest only seems to be renewed because of proximity and because he's at a loose end emotionally.

Luke and Sadie were separated when telling their stories so how did it come out that the charges were'nt going to be filed against her, if she was telling the detective that Luke went to get his car on a different level and he told the same detective that he saw what really happened. (Have to go back and look) She thanked him for making a false statement getting her off not being charged. Luke looked a little surprise, annoyed that she wasn't staying but leaving town after all he did for her.

Juliette's temper tantrum didn't bother me. I think it was played as slap-stick. It kind of reminded me of Kristen Wiig at the bridal shower in Bridesmaids.

Yeah, I agree. And I mind "unrealistic and over the top" much, much less when it's played for physical comedy. That's just the nature of the beast. And Hayden's great at it!

Sutton: I think Luke just said he'd seen the shooting. Sadie could say he wasn't there, but it's entirely believable that she might not have seen him. So he wouldn't be caught in a lie. I didn't get annoyance from him with Sadie, just surprise and disappointment. I did think it was interesting that he snapped at Rayna about it. She was totally justified in being like, "How'd you two end up over a dead body together??" But he took it as an accusation. He's really got issues as related to Rayna and her relationship Deacon.

MM - He's always had issues with Rayna's attachment to Deacon, even in the early years when Rayna always looked out for Deacon and forgave him. Rayna's heart has always been for Deacon and Luke just can't get it that they have been IN LOVE with each other since, (Luke said it, it's been just you two from the first time you to met) He has always wanted Rayna for himself, never thought Deacon was good enough for her. I think he does love her, but never tried to really understand her or what she wanted out of life, or how much IN LOVE with Deacon she was. All those fancy things he threw at her didn't make her happy, but he didn't even see it. She was a prize to be won from Deacon and he thought he'd won. That's my take....

I...don't think Rayna has perfect hair.

 No its perfect.

I kinda loved Scarlett in this episode! Loved how she stood up for herself and shot Gunnar down. That "I only felt music" throwback to when Gunnar said that to her was bitchy in an awesome way (since he totally had it coming). Gunnar needs to realize that just because he wants a girl doesnt mean he is entitled to her.... GO SCARLETT!! shes come so far.

Britton's hairline makes her look almost simian to me.  And her hair is kind of colorless.

It seemed like Gunnar only wanted Scarlett because someone else did.  I can't keep up with these couples.  I don't even recall (or care) why Gunnar and Scarlett broke up or even Gunnar and Zoe.  The writers sure like Gunnar's Man Pain, though.  Poor guy loses a brother, a son and all the women.  Maybe his liver will fall out next.

I'm with Juliette and most of the TV-watching world; Connie's hair is pretty much perfect. Hqtextbook, I don't know who her colorist/stylist is, but I want to make him/her mine!

I loved Scarlett's response to Gunnar too, though I really didn't get that she'd been pining for him and that's why she was so mad about Zoe. I thought she was more angry with Zoe herself for breaking the girl code. I know Scarlatt/Gunnar are meant to be, but I just can't get on that train at the moment. They sing beautifully together, but as most have noted, Gunnar REALLY needs to grow up.

I really did not see where Scarlett was ready to get back together with Gunnar either.

I love Connie's hair, it's a gift of genetics, that, she obviously takes wonderful care of!

What bothers me a little bit, is anyone posting, that they hope the baby dies!

I would never hope for the death of, even a fictional infant, no matter how tongue-in-cheek it might be, and, I sure don't want to have to see Hayden, grieving for the loss of her baby, , when, she's just had a baby in real life!

Britton's hairline makes her look almost simian to me. And her hair is kind of colorless.

Her hairline does rival Teresa Giudice's, but I think the color is pretty. I thought it was natural, but I saw roots recently. I think she would benefit from a side part. Not many people can carry off the midline part. I thought it looked more lush on AHS.

I agree that I really loved when Scarlett said I only felt music, though it took me a minute to recall when Gunner said it to her.  I loved how their argument filled in all the blanks.  Gunner proposed but then moved on with Zoey because he felt rejected and needed someone.  Scarlett turned him down because she knew he wasn't in the right place and waited for him to figure out what he wanted and come back so they could figure out together what they wanted as a couple.  When they sang together it brought up those old feelings, and it seemed to me if Scarlett hadn't nixed the deal for them to write a bunch of songs together they would have ended up back together for the wrong reasons and hurt Zoey in the process.  When Scarlett saw Gunner at the party and was brave enough to ask about the feelings the singing brought up, that's when he said I only felt the music. He blamed Scarlett for losing the deal and couldn't admit he had feelings for her at all.  So I'm sure they will end up together but yes, Gunner really needs to grow up.  If you take into consideration the way Gunner grew up with his brother, just managing to turn his life around to make music in Nashville instead of ending up in prison is a success story in itself.  It's not unbelievable at all that he hasn't picked up any relationship skills along the way.

Boy was Sadie a waste of time and space.  Rayna spent all that money paying off Pete and then the stupid woman shot him and leaves Rayna high and dry.  Why not shoot him before giving him the money?  Of course Sadie has always gotten on my nerves.  I hope Rayna sues her for breach of contract and for all of the payoff money.  Rayna's label has got to be in serious trouble.

I'd forgotten they already paid him off. Unless timeline here is short enough that they haven't had enough time to cut the check.

There seems to be little continuity in these characters from week to week.  So I won't comment on all that false drama.  I just thought that the duet at the end was so sweet, mama and daddy singing to the new baby girl, whose name, IMHO, should be Melody.

The Mr and I turned to each other and said "Melody" at the same time. I didn't realize there were names out there, and I suppose Cadence works - but as a military brat, that evokes something very different than what I'd want to call a little girl.

100% agree. This is not a crime worth all this coverup. It is part of the writing of this show, where they can't figure out how to write coherent storylines or consistent characters.

They whipsaw back and forth for most of the characters. Will Juliette be bratty this week, will she be thoughtful. Will Luke be just a bit devious, possibly dangerous, or will he be sympathetic. Will Rayna be earth mother, will she be self-centered. Will Deacon be everyone's dream boat, or will he be a stubborn idiot. Thing is, with better writers, the characters could encompass those opposites in their personalities (ie layered characters). Somehow that just doesn't happen. Which is sad.

So tired of pouty Gunnar. I didn't find his pushing the song particularly creepy - just him being a clueless tool and entitled male who refuses to get a clue. It is amazing to me that I started out loving the Gunnar character and hating Avery, and now it's completely reversed.

You are absolutely right, Sandman!  And I thought the treatment of her was abysmal.  They were acting like she shot him in his shower at home, not in a parking garage where she had parked her car and he was stalking her.  Despite the restraining order.

The police did not treat her badly at all.  She killed a man with an illegal firearm.  I kind of hate that they let her off easy.  Sadie has been annoying from the first day they brought her on the show, but at least she is gone now.  They tried to shoehorn her into the show and she never fit.

Through her dumb choices, she has jeopardized Highway 65.

Here's a nit I've been dying to pick- what's up with Deacon and his guitar strap with his name on it? Nobody over 8 years old would choose that for a guitar strap. It is so hokey and dumb and a cool guy like Deacon, I don't think, would EVER have a guitar strap with just his name on it like his is. It's the only guitar strap he ever plays with, though I think the guitars change underneath the strap.

I don't agree. See Ray Benson.

I will always have a soft spot for Julie Taylor, even though I know she was a brat. Maybe because I never can hate my Friday Night Lights characters ("Texas forever!").

Truer words.....

This episode was a major disappointment. To be honest I've felt a huge quality drop in this season. I feel like everytime the show introduces a new storyline, we can tell the end of it after 5 minutes, and still it drags. Rayna chooses Luke because she wants a healthy successful drama free life. Fine. Except we all knew she would eventually get back with Deacon which only happened last episode. Which is also fine I guess except that they kept dragging it, which made Rayna seem like the most self absorbed person in the world, Deacon like a hopeless romantic who won't take know for an answer, and Luke like a horrible guy who wanted to keep Rayna grounded to him and credit all her success to him.

Juliette's character has been destroyed this season in my opinion and this episode just proves it more. This was the Juliette we saw in the pilot. Even Hayden doesn't seem all too convinced of her tantrums. Which is such a shame because, at the end of season 2 she had become so fascinating and her speech to Avery after she slept with Jeff was one of the most self reflective, self aware dialogues this show had ever done. To see her go through the pregnancy as a hysterical hormonal woman was just ridiculous and caricatural. I don't even find it funny as much as degrading.

Gunnar and Scarlett ended last season with him convincing her to stay in town, and they're obviously endgame, except they're gonna keep dragging it until we hate them both so much that by the time they're together again, we'll just be like "you're equally terrible. Have at it"

Though I have to say I did like Scarlett's callback to last season's very same situation. Her telling Gunnar that "it was just music" was awesome on her end, especially that Gunnar is acting like a 16 years old tortured soul with the world doesn't get me attitude. And blaming it on Scarlett for refusing her proposal is just awful! I'm a lot more impressed with Avery and Scarlett's relationship because the transition was a lot more organic. With Gunnar you know it's never gonna get there until he starts being mature and realizes that there's a whole other world outside his emo self.

Sadie annoyed the hell out of me this episode. I'm not sure why but I just couldn't feel anything in her scenes, maybe because again, it was all very predictable.

The 'emotional' shots of Teddy looking himself in the mirror were a flop. I guess he's either on his way to become Lamar or to prison or to just die.

I agree with what most of you said about Maddie, she's just annoying. I don't see how Daphne gets to be the mature one. I know Deacon isn't her dad but still she's a kid and she's gone through a lot of drastic changes lately, and somehow she interacts with people around her as people, not as 'shells' like someone noted earlier.

I think I need to watch Friday Night Lights just to see if Connie Britton was as catatonic on that show as she is on Nashville. Girl, Sadie just told you she shot her ex-husband. React!

If they name the baby Rayna I may stab someone.

So Maddie is back to being a brat (have the writers even met a real teenager?) while Daphne continues to be the most adorable little chipmunk ever.

Thank God for Juliette and Deacon. Shoutout to the fixer guy for all that shade he threw at Teddy though.

Also, what in the hell... police? You've been holding Sadie... probably for hours and you haven't let her wash the blood off her hands in all that time?

Avery continues to be great. I never thought I'd be typing that in season 1 but it's so true now.

They're letting her do some great acting but I need them to stop making so much of Laura Benanti's dialogue apologies to Rayna. It's starting to grate.

I enjoyed Juliette's rant/rampaging. It wasn't just fun. It also fit with her character to lash out when she feels alone or isn't getting attention. I wish they'd spent a little more time with it. This is one of those moments when I think she would really be missing her mom.

Is this guy Luke signed a new character I have to care about? Nashville, you have too many characters and most of them don't spend their time doing anything interesting.

"I'm not going anywhere"? That's it. Deacon's getting his liver from Teddy.

Finally! Even if I saw it all a mile coming I need that Rayna/Juliette blow up.

Damn it, you two. It was good I was watching on hulu because I needed subtitles for that Gunnar/Scarlett fight.

Really, Nashville? You can write Sadie off but no one else? Well, aside from the black characters.
