Oh, I was wondering, was that black rectangular-ish thing supposed to be a picture frame or something on the desk when Vane's quartermaster went to grab the knife? I thought it was a faux pas and someone left a cell phone on the desk. Maybe they did, heh.

My interpretation of that scene was that John Silver speaks Spanish and does it well enough to masquerade as a crew man on a Spanish merchant vessel.  Flint was telling him what to say (because Flint understands Spanish and could hear the questions) but John was doing the talking because with his looks he could pass for Spanish (which Flint decidedly could NOT do.)  I have no idea whether the actor, Luke Arnold, can speak Spanish and since I don't speak it I would not recognize if he has a terrible accent, but I think we're meant to believe that John's accent is good enough for him to pass for Spanish.

Thanks. I'll have to re-watch the scene to decide. But the way I interpreted it, Silver couldn't speak Spanish, or at least not fluently, otherwise he wouldn't need Flint right there by his feet to tell him what to say, or at least, he wouldn't have needed Flint to say the exact line in Spanish. And also you're right that Silver was a better choice because someone could have possibly recognized Flint and that Silver looks more stereotypically Spanish. (But if Flint's Spanish is decent, there's no reason he couldn't have passed for Spanish himself. There were Spanish redheads, a famous example being Joanna of Castile:

I think you're right in that Silver's accent was supposed to be good and the audience was just meant to go with that flow, but from what I could tell it wasn't that great, heh.

I'm not sure that naming names was actually a choice that John COULD consider, from a self-preservation standpoint. He knows that Flint's crew has the keys -- and if they got wind of him naming names (which could easily happen on a ship), they would kill him for being a traitor. A less strong self-interest argument is that he knows Flint's crew has the keys and that his best bet for long-term survival is with Flint's crew (they want him to be quartermaster), so he is trying to stall to give them time to win.

Whatever his true motivation (and level of amputation) turn out to be, I can't wait until next season!

Oh, thanks! - I was unsure, because I was like, is that a smartphone, but I also noticed there were no cable ports.

I guess it's a sign of my modern mindset that I was like oh my God, something small dark and square? Must be a smartphone! One of the many, many reasons I would suck at pirating: lack of smartphones (or even just regular phones).

I get why Silver told Flint.  Everybody's world has been rocked.  The pirates really get that they are a hunted species.  Silver was selfish, he was all "ME ME ME."  But Vane's crewman mutilated him and in the end, the rest of the crew fought to save his life and they voted him quartermaster.

I don't think it is that simple.  John has backed himself into a corner.  I still think he is all about himself, but right now has no where to turn and with the other people involved in his scheme dead, and his leg gone, he made the choice to side with Flint.  I would never put my money on him as loyal to anyone.  I love me some John Silver, but I do not kid myself…this boy is a player, and he plays for himself!

That reminds me, was another thing I liked regarding Silver telling the truth/the end scene - when he said, "forgive me, I'm having a hard time right now" - it was the truth, but it was also a way of trying to get Flint's wrath to deflate just weeee bit.

Wasn't it Flint who said that line?  Flint, who was struggling to control his anger?  I interpreted that disjointed line as meaning "Wait . . . what?    He just TOLD you that he lied to us?  Why would he tell you that?  I'm having troubled understanding what you are saying . . . I think you may be lying to me . . . I think you were in on this . . .  Who the FUCK did he sell the information to?"

John just cowered the whole time knowing that his story was VERY thin and Flint might see right through it.   Think about it -- if the two co-conspirators lied about the Urca gold, what possible reason would they have to tell John the truth?  Flint's no fool.  I think the bubbling anger we saw in that scene was not just his fury at the discovery of the lie -- it also reflected his suspicion that John was in on the lie -- John who is now his new quartermaster and the number one favorite pirate on his ship.   He can't afford to kill off another popular quartermaster (RIP Mr. Gates) so even suspecting John, he's stuck with him.

Yep, I think Season three is going to bring us the unholy alliance of Captain Flint and Quartermaster Silver (who will not trust each other) joining forces with Captain Vane and Quartermaster Bones (who will have an uneasy alliance at best) to go after Captain Rackham & Co.  Until they change their minds and all three crews join forces against the British.

Where Blackbeard will fit into all this I have no idea.

Oops, you're right. He totally sounded like Silver to me when he said that line, heh. It went all deep and wasn't his usual rasp.

Do Rackham and Ann Bonny know it was Silver who gave Max the info?

I do think maybe Silver probably would have been better off confessing all to Flint, especially since he had just gained favor with him, but I guess given he just cannonballed a whole town maybe not.

Is Silver's amputation above or below the knee? I couldn't tell. Also, lots of clever blocking so the CGI peeps didn't have to do all that much leg erasure.

I thought the blanket silhouette looked like an above knee or through-knee amputation but I guess we'll see!

I kind of see this too and only time will tell, but I think Silver could have been affected when the men refused to leave his side when he was getting his leg amputated; it wasn't to gawk, I felt it was to support him.  I think Silver is basically all about himself, but he realizes that's impossible now.  He's like a selfish person who comes down with a serious disease and now needs support to stay alive.

ETA, what I thought was cool, in a sick sort of way, was the juxtaposition of Silver getting his leg amputated and the destruction of Charles Town.  The moment Flint gave the signal to light the canons was when the surgeon started to amputate Silver's leg.  I watched that sequence three times and I thought, "wow, I'd never tie those two things together" but it worked.

Yes. Flint was as gentle and friendly in the beginning of the conversation (hey there new quartermaster buddy).  However, after the "confession" the flickers in his eyes changed to anger.  It probably took Flint half a second to figure out the 2 men were not smart (or greedy) enough to pull that kind of scheme, but Silver was ;)

Plus, Silver had previously told Flint that you can trust me as long as you are the best instrument to get me a share of that gold.

I think Silver could have told Flint flat out that he was in on it.

In essence, that is exactly what he did.

I haven't paid the strictest attention this season, so I am wondering if there was any possible reason - before Silver semi-confessed to Flint about the gold - for Silver to think that Flint wouldn't let him go now if he said to him, I'm going to leave the crew when we get to Nassau or wherever and make own way? Just because while Silver is greedy, he also always seemed to prioritize surviving even over money. So I'm wondering if his ambitions have reached the point where he is maybe willing to possibly lose his life over it, because otherwise, you'd think he'd be a little spooked after losing his leg, because staying with the pirates there is always the risk he could lose the other one the next day, or of course, get killed altogether. At a certain point staying with the pirates could decrease his chances of survival pretty severely. Unless, of course, it's just simply that he thought he couldn't survive on his own right now if he left.

I think Billy because quartermaster to Vane's captain will likely happen, but I imagine it would just lead to him very quickly hating Vane as much as he hates Flint.

One more thing, when Flint responded to Billy's, "what's the target," with "whatever's left."  Vane's face was priceless.  He had this look that was a cross between pride and "this mofo's crazy."

I think Silver knows he has to stay with the crew because he probably feels he can't survive on his own right now.  I mean back then if you got your leg amputated, unless you were wealthy or something, there wasn't much for you except begging on the streets.  I think that's why the crew told Silver, "we'll take care of you."

I'm a bad woman because every time I think of John Silver I think, "that can't really be his name, it sounds like a porn star."  Then I think of the porn star "Long Dong Silver."  Ugh.

And now I'm thinking of Long Duk Dong from "16 Candles". LOL!

I'd actually love it if Billy became Vane's new quartermaster. Two of my favorites together. TeamBane. I wonder if Vane will try to rescue Eleanor from England (as he did with Flint) or if he'll say screw her. I hope he says screw her. Flint might go to her aid. Or perhaps Abigail will return to England and try to help her. But I figure the odds are 50/50 after Charles Town and her father's death that she will look fondly on the people of Nassau again.

Unless they can intercept the ship taking her back to England, I can't see the pirates actually assaulting London. That's way different than a small colonial town.

They could try to intercept the ship Eleanor is on but I don't think that will be a high priority to Flint knowing now that the gold is still in play.

Obviously they wouldn't try a full fledged assault against England as they did on Charles Town. But Vane or Flint might try something a bit more stealthy.
