Wanted to stop by and say "Hi" I'm an old MBTV, TWoP reader and I'm thrilled to find this place! My DH and I love this show, along with "Breaking Bad" and (don't judge me) "Supernatural". I hope I can contribute something to this site, and don't make too much of a fool of myself!

Welcome aboard the long ships!  Just in time to visit Paris in the spring.

Thanks Green! April in Paris-heaven!

I'm having a blast looking around this site. Reminds me s much of TWoP. I saw it talked about  when TWoP closed, but didn't follow up on it, but needed a place to talk about the shows I love. Supernatural, Breaking Bad, Better Call Sal, and Mad Men. Oh and  Vikings! My husband is a Norseman and is well versed in the lore.

Thanks everyone for being so accepting of a new-comer!

Viking history is pretty much in the latter camp unless you're from Iceland or the like.

I actually found out about the show Vikings because I was looking up the spelling of Ívarr hinn Beinlausi...who was the name my Norweigian Grandmother used for the "boogie man" while I was growing up.  She didn't know any of the back story and would describe his as the man with no bones.

Was anybody else here a big fan of HBO's "Rome"?

Reason I ask is because that's the last TV series I've liked as much as this one.   And there's something about "Vikings"  that's reminiscent of "Rome" - both shows really transport me back to their respective times and places.

I loved that show and when HBO canceled it, I canceled HBO.  That was the last straw.  (They had already pissed me off by canceling Deadwood.)

Nearly the same scenario at the jnymph household! I thought Deadwood was great too

Our household loved Rome on HBO as well. We were very disappointed when it was cancelled. They had so much more story to tell.

Mick Lady:

I was just thinking; thank god Vikings are rocking it;  because I find Mad Men to be hugely disappointing this season.    And Better Call Saul already had the season finale ! That was way too short.   I absolutely adore Saul; but Athelstan is my true TV boyfriend.  ;P

King Eckbert has impacted how I watch Law and Order....on the weekend's I usually have it on in the background as I get stuff done, yesterday he (ADA Cutter) made a comment about "something spanking both ways" and I nearly spit out my breakfast.

Just for good measure Siggy was on an episode last week...it took me most of the episode to figure out who she was.

I was thinking "Ragnar" would be a cool name for my next male dog. "Lagertha" for a female...."Laggie" for short.

I have a "naming convention" for my pets but I would totally name a cat Athelstan.  It has ocured to me that Rollo and Gisla or Gyda would be great names.

Now we have the long wait until the next season I have been going to YouTube for my Vikings fix. There are a few good tributes to the show but one uploader really does the show justice. His name is Zurik 23m. The music, drama and cutting of his tributes are really second to none. Take a look you won't be disappointed.

Also, 3 others worthy of mention, not zurik's

No light, no light

Bleeding out

A man like no other.

Enjoy vikings fans.

Popping in to say I've been re-watching my old HBO "Rome" DVD's & wanted to suggest it to everyone.

There's something about "Rome" that is reminiscent of "Vikings" to me.  It's helping to fill that void.

I wasn't sure where to put this so I guess this is as good as any place.  The Last Kingdom debuted last night on BBCAmerica.  It is based on the books by Bernard Cornwell and is the story of a young Saxon boy who is kidnapped and raised by Vikings so he grows up with divided loyalties.  Ragnar's sons play a big, big role in the story.  I haven't seen the first episode yet, but have been waiting since spring for this to air.  I'm hoping it will be enjoyable for Vikings fans while we wait for its return.

Random Vikings Thoughts.....I keep getting e-mails about Viking t-shirts from teespring (which is fine...I ordered one so I get it)...they seem to have a ton of shirts abut Valhalla...which I get understand they seem to use Valhalla as a proxy for "viking land" more so than where vikings go when they die.  I realize "Straight Outta Kattegat" isn't as universal but to be "Straight Outta Valhalla" would require you to die first.

So I did a rewatch this weekend of some of my favorite episodes from season 1. I have to say; season 1 was the best. Granted, this is still the best show on TV right now; but it's just not as phenomenal as the first season..... Nor season 2.

I miss coherent, inquisitive Ragnar & his muse Athelstan VERY MUCH.

Eta- not sure muse is the correct word, but you know what I mean. : /

Didn't know where to post this but wanted to share: My husband actually met Alexander Ludwig last winter when he was up in our area filming a movie.  He is very tall (my hubby is 6'0 and Ludwig was several inches taller than him) and super friendly to everyone.  He apparently had a squad of girls squealing over him.  I was working so wasn't there sadly :(

I can't even lie, if I'd been there my 37 year-old self would've been squealing over him too!

It's nice to hear he was friendly.

Just curious...are any of you doing ancestry and finding these people in your line?  Bewteen both parents I have Aelle, Aslaug, Ragnar, Sigurd, and Ivar with a wife named Ingiald.  I also have Robert I of Normandy, who was called "The Devil" and "The Magnificent".   Not sure how the Scandinavian accounts would be as accurate as the English and French, but it's fun to say "HI" to my grandpas and grannies.

Which site are you doing the research through?

My aunt did one of those DNA tests and found that we had a higher than usual percentage of Neanderthal in us. I have no idea what to make of that, lol.

On a random note, I was lucky to visit Sweden about eight years ago, but wasn't much into the Viking angle until I started watching the show. In hindsight, I wished I'd taken advantage of the opportunity to absorb more of the history while I was there.

Bitter Apple,    I first did a DNA test through the National Geographic Genome Project.   It showed the mitochondrial DNA, which traces the females in your line.  That was about 10 years ago and I thought it was odd to be traced back to the Sami reindeer people of the Arctic.  Then began the hobby of genealogy through ancestry.com about 7 years ago.  I thought that it was interesting to find Scandinavian ancestry confirming the previous test results from NGeo.  Their DNA test confirmed it also.  I've been to W. Europe a couple of times, but was never interested in going to Scandinavia until this series began.  Now I want to go!

Bablooie, if you have the opportunity, definitely go. I was in Stockholm and found the people there to be really nice. Everybody speaks English so you won't have any communication problems and the men are verrryy easy on the eyes;).

I was there back when I was a flight attendant so my coworkers and I were more interested in the party scene rather than the cultural stuff. Now that I'm a married old lady my interests have reversed.

So every year for the past few years I see articles like this one and last weekend walking around the city I noticed the signs calling for extras too.

http://www.thejournal.ie/vikings-dublin-casting-2784041-May2016/

Also last summer they filmed on the lake where my in laws live and I heard stories of them sitting out watching battles unfold.

And yet, for some reason I've never had any great interest in watching. Am I missing out? What would be a comparable series, like 'if you liked x then you would enjoy Vikings'. I'm willing to be converted!

The show is often compared to Game of Thrones but I don't watch that.  I came to Vikings because I love/d Sons of Anarchy and confused Charlie Hunam (Jax Teller) for Travis Fimmel* (Ragnar Lothbrok).

*Travis Fimmel, until this role, was best known to me as the terrible actor in "Tarzan" and, also, an Australian underwear model.  Somewhere along the line, he took acting lessons.  Because, he is phenomenal as Ragnar.

I LOVE the girl above (of course she's my daughter) :) But I also love others that sing Viking inspired songs.  This lady does a great song (I believe she wrote it, but not sure).  It reminds me of all the strong Viking Ladies here on the forum.... Babalooie; are you a Savage Daughter? :) :)

Enjoy the song!

Beside searching the internet for "Viking inspired songs" like the two posts above I have found that another thing that is fun to do when the show is on its break is read some awesome Viking Comics by Titan Comics.  The art and stories are actually really good!  The stories in each of the 4 issue mini series are stories that take place between major events that happened in the show.  There has been 2 mini's so far; God Head and Uprising, both worth the read!

Last but not least; the other thing I love to do during the break is shopping for Viking goodies on line.  Someone mentioned Tee-spring earlier, and I have bought stuff from them (like the Shield Maiden t-shirt I bought my daughter in the video above), but most of the shopping I do for me is from Grim frost; which is a Scandinavian ran company in Sweden.  My favorite shirt I have from them is below.  Any favorite Viking goodies you have bought?

Viking currently is the only TV show I look forward too; the other shows I have watched or binged recently are below (my favorite first):

  1. Vikings
  2. Game of Thrones
  3. Walking Dead
  4. Last Man on Earth
  5. Punisher
  6. Stranger Things
  7. Luke Cage
  8. Fear the walking dead
  9. Mad Men
  10. Breaking Bad

Those are my top ten; what are yours?? :)

SOTN, I didn't know that you had already met my sister Frida.

I hope you are kidding Ricky! LOL

She didn't give the name of Frida (but that doesn't mean it wasn't her).  Hopefully your family has been notified that she is "Okay, and is going to Make it" from what the specialist said at Landspitali a few hours after I took her there.  It was quite a shock to me; I have made many woman pass out from my manly-modern Viking love making techniques; but this is the first case of catatonic shock!  Hopefully she will recover fully soon, and not be sent off to Kleppur!!

Either way; no hard feeling from her family I hope.  I did have her sign the standard waiver though, right after she offered to buy me the first bottle of Surtur Imperial Stout.

My daughter and SIL are going to Iceland in April for a vacation.  Son of the Norse, if you can suggest anything that is a must see or must do please let me know.  Thanks!

I will give a nice write up about my trip once it is over.  April is also a very beautiful time of the year to visit here, good choice!
