Covers: The Good, The Bad, The Meh

Joe Cocker used to do a lot of covers, almost always done quite well,  some I liked better than the originals.  In his prime, Joe was a formidable force few could  contend with. His cover at Woodstock of The Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends" literally blew everyone away.

Tonight I heard "Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers and suddenly had the realization that Bruce Willis covered the song on his debut album (which I used to listen to constantly in 6th/7th grade).  Between that, his hit version of the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself" and "Youngblood," I think there were a lot of songs I heard for the first time without even knowing they were covers at the time (which is a little embarrassing)!

Hearing "Sweet Thing" by Rufus tonight reminded me that this was another song where I didn't know something was a cover.  My senior year, our English teacher would let us play music on his cassette player while we worked on our group projects.  A friend contributed Mary J. Blige's debut album, and when "Sweet Thing" came on, I was like, "Oh, I know this song."  My friend declared, "Everybody knows this song" and I was confused because I'd only heard it maybe once (having just been released as MJB's follow-up to "Real Love").  I apparently had no idea the original by Rufus even existed.  I'm surprised I hadn't at least heard it when I would listen to the throwback hour on the radio station I played while on vacation at my grandparents' house in the summer.  Anyway, both versions are great!
