S01.E15: Goddess of the Music Store

I was shocked when reminded that Toy Story was made in the 90s.  Mind blown!

I didn't mind this one but I kept waiting for something to happen!  So basically the whole story is Connor slept with a girl?

I don’t think it was nothing, we learned things about Connor, I enjoyed it.  Especially how Georgie reacted to Connor interacting with the girl at the store, when Connor himself was not realizing he was doing great.  But may I ask, what would you accept as something happening?  Short of something like George’s death, of course.

I agree.  I wish they'd advance the Dr Tire story line.  Basically this was everyone fighting about Connor's date as opposed to everyone fighting about Georgie or Mandy.  Not a great change.

Very funny episode and they finally fleshed out Connor's character so that he's not such a one-dimensional weirdo.  His off-center approach to his crush surprised Georgie AND me.  Nice job, Connor! LOL

The last few episodes have shown that the actors are feeling comfortable in their roles and really starting to gel.  Jim and Audrey come across as a more realistic couple (instead of a Karen and her punching bag).  This was alos the first time I thought Mandy was tolerable.  She's usually so ticked off about one thing or another.  This time, she was in on the fun.

For me, this show has gone from "I'll give it a try but I don't expect much" to "Yeah, it's not bad" to "Oh boy, Georgie and Mandy is on tonight!", all in a single season!

Oh nothing earth shattering or dramatic.  Just this episode, for me, while it was fine just wasn't particularly interesting.  Felt like a filler episode - and in a brand new show with mighty few episodes under their belt at that they really shouldn't be doing filler episodes.  I agree that we've learned a bit more about Connor but nothing that's made me like him any better.  I guess what we have learned, or certainly has been confirmed, in this episode is don't trust Georgie to keep your secrets.

Plus subtracting the opening and the credits at the end, the episode was about a mere 16 minutes of show time.

Just one gal's opinion, but I find Connor and Chloe already to be a more compelling couple than Georgie and Mandy.

To link it to original recipe BBT, it's like when comic book store Stuart found a great girlfriend who also liked comic books.  They became an audience favorite.

The difference though is we had had years to root for Stuart and hope things turned around for him.  For me Connor is not an interesting character.  He's a 26 yr old man who seems to have never held a job.  He lives off his parents and he's quirky.  Not impressed.

Oh well we can all agree or disagree.  I'm finding it fun.

I think this is not the kind of show based on a major on-going story arc. It's more like the old style of sitcom with each episode being more or less a "vignette". There is SOME development of character or story, but mostly each episode is a moment in time and a slice of life.

I'm glad some people enjoyed it.  I just didn't care so much about Connor's love life.  It might be more interesting to see him get his life together before seeing who he's dating.  I'm not even sure I quite bought that he had it in him, based on what we've seen so far.

They seem to send the message that he's capable of doing whatever he wants to do.  The next question is so why isn't he doing it?  I guess he'll probably end up being a musician of some sort.  They seemed to hint that maybe he's played some gigs, even, which again seems like a minor surprise.  Eh, I don't know.  It's like Penny's acting career in TBBT.  It's nice she had her dreams, but I'd prefer to see something more grounded.

I guess having these lovable (?) underdogs/underachievers is some sort of Chuck Lorre thing?  We didn't see these in Young Sheldon, so maybe I got out of the habit of seeing them.

I think he is doing what he wants to do. He's not doing more because nobody asks him to. They established that in an earlier episode, when  he did a bunch of chores and was asked why, if he's so capable of doing them, he never did them before, and he said "because no one asked me to". His mother apparently enjoys infantilizing him.

I'm not saying a lack of ambition is a great thing, but then again he doesn't seem unhappy, and I bet a lot of people would "retire and pursue hobbies" if they had the means.

I actually find him to be one of the more likable characters on the show. Not because he's loafing off this parents, but because he's not always complaining and he's generally easy to be around. Everybody else is either irritable or stressed most of the time. If I was his parent, I would expect him to get a job (we saw he can do that because he did it briefly in another episode). But just from a viewing perspective, I find him enjoyable. He is so *reasonable* all the time.

Another Chuck Lorre hallmark, a mother damaging her son.

If he really wants to waste his life, that's his business and I don't care.  But I just don't find him very interesting.

That would be interesting, but there probably a limited number of episodes they can use to tell that story.  I imagine they don't want to get into that during the first season.  Plus if Georgie starts his own tire business, do they move out of Mandy's parents' house?  The series seems to be set up to revolve around her family mostly.

In the meantime, just working for Jim shows that Georgie is learning the business.  Maybe they could move him up to an office job, or maybe have him open a branch store?  Lots of possibilities.

TBBT often only had 17 minutes of dialogue, but it was pretty snappy.
Actually, some of this was too.

But one line I couldn’t figure out was at the end when Conner told Mandy this wasn’t his first sexual encounter because “musicians get chicks.”
Was Connor telling the truth?
And/or was this a coda to the episode to let the audience know the character of Connor has been retconned?

I've been noticing and commenting all season so far on how they're finding a direction with Connor and it looks like they're normalizing him somewhat. Not altogether, but just enough to make him likable and not weirdo-strange. He's a little quirky like the BBT characters, maybe even less quirky as time goes on. I find him interesting, not boring. He has interests and talents. He marches to a different drum than his family but he isn't without his merits. I don't find it out of character for him to have had sex or previous girlfriends. Still waters run deep and he may not be like he seems on the surface. I like the fact that it's feeling a little surprising because they have set us up to think that he would be less experienced and able to pursue a relationship than he's turning out to be.

I also liked the song he wrote and played. And when the girl sang to it, it really did sound sort-of 90's-ish. I appreciated that too.

I wonder how he could afford all of that equipment in his room? If it has been addressed in the show I must have missed that.

It's been said many times that he has never worked and also that his mother is very indulgent.  So I am guessing if the writers gave this any thought we're meant to assume Audrey has been buying him whatever he wants.  I think we viewers though do give this stuff much more thought than the writers do!

That makes sense especially the way she reacted to him meeting a girl! I agree that we do think more about this than the writers do. LOL
