Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing

So I finally watched it, and what stuck me is Piper not receiving any education?! So she's never been to public/private school? No home schooling or private tutors? That is crazy work.

Tiffany is gross, and I don't understand why the parents didn't press charges against her. I get them trying to recoup the money the kids earned, but that broad and her Hunter should be locked up.

This is exactly the reason why I don't follow children and most family  influencers on social media; there's always something sinister behind them.

I'm so angry at these other mothers who were very happy to have their kids make money but are now crying because they learned their kids were being exploited, and worse. It's your damn job to know what's going on with your child and, if you're being prevented from knowing that, then you remove your child from that situation immediately!

Right?

How does this happen? How have they never had a visit from CPS or some other government agency? Usually these agencies are crawling up your sphincter at the drop of a hat but somehow the most egregious offenses go unchecked.

I feel sorry for Piper on so many levels. No education, no childhood, no idea who her real friends are or who she can trust, no parental love or guidance. Piper probably questions if anyone in her life cares about her or if they just wanna get something from her.

Tiffany is wacko though. I'm with the other poster who asked how she wasn't brought up on charges of sexual assault on all these minors. She's done it multiple times. That's a separate issue from the civil case that was brought by the former squad members. The authorities should follow up on that but they don't appear to be interested.

I'm beginning to believe that this type behavior is so normalized in L.A. and the entertainment realm that they're blind to it. No one seems interested in Dan Schneider appearing to have a thing with underage actors or any of the other decades long problems with underage SA in the industry.

CPS/DSS (Department of Social Services) doesn't give a shit in my experience. I called them about my former upstairs neighbors who had two kids under four years old in a two-bedroom apartment with at least three or four adults. The place was a wreck and there was no actual bed for the kids to sleep on. The kids were up until past 2:30 am most nights, screaming and running wild nonstop for the entire three years they lived above us. Because I wasn't "seeing" physical signs of abuse or neglect, DSS wouldn't do a thing.

I'm going to say that it's because 1) this is a white family in a large, well-kept house, with a mother who is great at manipulating people and a kid who's been trained to perform at the drop of a hat. My guess is that even if the family has been reported, there is nothing in the home that checks any boxes. If there is a conversation with Piper, she knows exactly what to say down to what her "homeschooling" schedule is and what her favorite subject is and 2) its LA where being a kid who is not in school at all for 10-12 years straight isn't an anomaly.

Trust me, if this were a black or Hispanic content creator in South Central or Long Beach, the family would be having case workers up the wazoo.

I did not get a good vibe from Sophie’s mom/Tiffany’s former housemate. I suspect she was a big part of some of the shit that went down there, and knows way more than she’s saying. She also seemed to be under the influence of something for all of her interview.

I do not understand the YouTube phenomenon. I like reality shows like many of us, but I never had any desire to watch any of the family/kid/whatever vlogs. And now between this and Shari Franke, it seems like it’s faker than regular reality TV! And at least with those the “cast” gets long breaks from having cameras in their faces and homes. The way these children were forced to be ON all the time is so incredibly damaging.

I don’t understand why this woman wasn’t arrested for sexual assault against minors. I mean I understand the families wanting a financial settlement but that should be different than a legal crime. Why would parents let their young kids live with woman? No amount of money would be worth it.

They were chasing the almighty dollar. It's the same as stage moms who push their kids into acting. They say it's for the kids, but it's really for them.

I felt sad watching this. These kids were exploited. No child should be the breadwinner for the family.

Absolutely no admirable characters in this show. I will never understand a parent who puts their child’s “career” ahead of their safety and well being. The moms trying to act as if they were victims made me sick.

Agree.

It reminds me of Tatum O'Neal's book about her childhood. There was drug use (including her own father giving her drugs) and Tatum was sexually asssaulted numerous times by men who were at the house during the parties. She and her brother were left on their own much of the time beginning when they were 9 or 10. Nothing was done, because it was a wealthy household and Ryan O'Neal was a big star. Then when she and Griffin were in their teens, he left both of them to go live with Farrah Fawcett. Just left them in the house on their own.

Similar story about MacKenzie Phillips and her screwed up parents. Drew Barrymore was going to nightclubs and Hollywood parties before she was a teen, and she went into rehab at age 13.

I expect there are many other stories similar to this about Hollywood kids raised in wealthy homes. The money is the mask. Most don't look beneath it.

Yep and no unions protecting them like the ones for child actors, which aren't perfect but it's something. No child labor laws protecting them.

And these kids weren't even going to school! No education. They mentioned Piper not going to school at all in the beginning, not even home school.

I'm with ya.

I've seen docs and read stuff about the exploitation and sexploitation of child stars as far back as Shirley Temple and Judy Garland all the way up through present day including the ones you mentioned and many more. Male and female. The more I find out the more I see the industry is far worse than I ever imagined. All for fame and money.

And it's like you said, it's for the parents not the kids. Look at the pageant moms too. It's usually some fat woman trying to make her daughter something she never was.

People wonder why child stars go off the rails. They've offered explanations like being unable to transition into adult roles or not being adored like when they were little and stuff like that. I think it's because they were sexually abused when they were kids. I think that's what happened to Amanda Bynes and Brittany Spears and so many others. It all fits.

I listened to the Pod Meets World episode where they discussed the Quiet On Set doc and the guy who played Shawn didn't seem to think this was a widespread problem in Hollywood and was more worried about it harming the industry. There seem to be a lot of former child actors that disagree with him though. I watched Alyson Stoner's youtube series called Dear Hollywood and she touches on sexual assault. I got the feeling she wanted to say more but couldn't.

I'm of the mind that maybe we should stop having people under the age of 18 in entertainment. A hundred years of Hollywood have shown us that the possibility of abuse outweighs any good that might come out of it.

I thought the same thing too.
