MMEButterfly October 2 Share October 2 I just can't with Karl Alberg as a romantic lead. I'm usually good with scruffy, but the way he moves his body is unappealing. And the story is kind of meh. 2 Link to comment

Chaos Theory October 2 Share October 2 The romantic aspect is still the weakest aspect by far. No chemistry at all. Plus I hate the trope of cop who leaves a date to solve a crime. I would have dumped his ass. The mystery aspect was better. I am always happy to see a cylon on my tv. I am glad Aaron Douglass has gotten a decent part in this. 2 Link to comment
HelloooKitty October 2 Share October 2 The romance aspect is not working even a little for me. I don’t care for either of the actors as romantic leads. I like the mystery aspect but then that’s my type of go to comfort show anyway. Why does it feel like the show is trying to be Twin Peaks but instead is landing somewhere just north of Murder She Wrote? Is it the setting? I don’t know if I am enjoying the mystery aspect enough to slog through the romance. I usually give a show 3 episodes before I decide so I may give it one more. 8 Link to comment
GeorgiaRai October 2 Share October 2 I have no interest in the romance storyline. I don't think it's necessary or enjoyable, and it takes up time that could be used to flesh out the mysteries. It has nothing to do with Karl (he's my favorite type of leading man - older, moody, serious) and I don't mind Cassandra as a character apart from their relationship. But awkward, angsty new relationships have their place; this particular Small Town just isn't it (for me). 4 Link to comment
Snazzy Daisy October 2 Author Share October 2 Yupp, still not liking Karl Alberg and his bedhead hair. 😣 Cassandra shouldn’t be worried about losing her identity and be reduced to a chief’s girlfriend. She’s way out of his league. Know your worth, girl. Another not-so-compelling COTW. Anyway, am glad Ivan finally leaving Kayla. 👍🏻 Isabella, forget your high school crush. Constable Andy Kendrick seems like a nice guy. Too young? *️⃣ This episode is directed by Leslie Hope. She was Teri Bauer in 24 — Jack Bauer’s wife. Link to comment
kaygeeret October 2 Share October 2 Part of what bothers me about the main cop is his scruffy appearance. I don't demand a three piece suit and styled hair, but the total uncombed sloppy look is weird. He is the HEAD of the damn dept. How about a tin bit of professional appearance. The romance reeks of high school junior nerds finally trying to date. Over the romance. The mystery lost me this time also. Who actually killed the jerk? 4 Link to comment
Crashcourse October 3 Share October 3 It was the brother of the guy whose wife was having an affair with the jerk who killed him. 1 hour ago, kaygeeret said: Part of what bothers me about the main cop is his scruffy appearance. Frankly, I don't know what Cassandra sees in him, but I guess the pickings are slim in a small town. 2 Link to comment
cameron October 3 Share October 3 This show is a toss up between the Martha Vineyard's Mysteries and Jesse Stone stories. Same police chief leaving the big city to find himself type of story. 3 Link to comment
Johannah October 3 Share October 3 I said it after the first episode and it's still true: the romance is awkward. I don't necessarily think she's out of his league or whatever, just they seem awkward together. She also seems awkward when talking to her friend about it, but that could be what the actress is going for. Doesn't explain why they seem so misfit when alone with each other. The mysteries are fine. I'm easy and like most one-hour catch the bad guy mysteries. Or a couple of hours, like movies, it's just the mysteries that last a season that seem drawn out to me. Still loving the scenery. 4 Link to comment
Linda956 October 3 Share October 3 I have to say, on a completely shallow note, Kristin Kreuk looks positively gorgeous! She doesn't seem to have aged a day in the 22 years since she's been on Smallville. I also don't feel any chemistry between the two leads. 5 Link to comment
blackwing October 3 Share October 3 The premise kind of reminded me a little bit of Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books. Police chief moves to small Canadian village/town where everybody knows everybody. This town seems significantly larger than Three Pines. But Karl's appearance is pretty much how I have always pictured Armand Gamache.. middle age, dishevelled hair, a little bit frumpy. Is Karl supposed to be some kind of genius or a bit touched? He seems extremely awkward around Cassandra. He has two daughters (one of whom isn't talking to him) and an ex-wife, so it's not like he's never been around women before. But the show seems to portray him as this 45-ish year old virgin who has never been on a date before. The way he just left her on the dance floor was eye-rolling and predictable. The romance doesn't work, and I'm left wondering why someone like Cassandra (who seems to be written as the most beautiful, friendliest and kindest person in town) is single. Also, they went from just meeting in episode 1 to established couple in episode 2, almost seemingly overnight. As far as the mystery... ehhhh. Something about the dead guy doing drug smuggling for his ex-girlfriend's brother-in-law? I figured out within a few minutes of meeting him that the murderer was going to turn out to be the brother. We seem to be getting a new mystery each week instead of a season long arc. But the town is supposedly so small, so it will be strange if we don't see any of the people ever again. I would like to know what happens with the husband and wife. He is done with her but she wants to save the marriage. It would be nice if the guest characters in each episode are at least mentioned in subsequent episodes. 4 Link to comment
isalicat October 4 Share October 4 Unpopular opinion, apparently: The mysteries are meh, but I really like the lead actor and his very competent police chief persona/very awkward romantic persona...kinda just my type. I think the romance is quite believable except for the part about the town librarian being movie star gorgeous (not that librarians cannot be beautiful people of either gender, but this is a bit over the top). So far, so good for a cozy 45 minute watch once a week! 8 Link to comment

And she's single not because she wants to be or from lack of trying, but because we are supposed to believe that in a town where everybody knows everybody, she's just THAT unlucky in love and nobody wants her. Mmmhmmm. 2 Link to comment

Their relationship feels like a romance between two real-life middle-aged people who haven't dated in a while. It seems realistic to me, but it lacks the excitement you typically see in TV romances. If his awkwardness is an indication that he doesn't know how to interact with women, that may be a clue as to why he is no longer married 😂 On 10/2/2024 at 7:23 PM, kaygeeret said: Part of what bothers me about the main cop is his scruffy appearance.
