Spoiler

OK so they filled out a lot of things the movie wouldn't have, in order to make it a series.

First, I don't buy that people would protest the wife.  Or later, they wouldn't clap the sun?  I mean Rusty is only a suspect.  No evidence has been presented in court so the public would have no idea what is being alleged.  I guess the fact that he was cheating and killed his mistress sounds bad but why would people take it out on the wife and the son?

And the wife's boss says to distance herself from Rusty.  So much for standing by your man, though Barbara is some kind of saint.  I can understand her not believing that her husband is a murder but he admits to stalking Carolyn, right up to when she was murdered and he impregnated her.

How can she still love him after these revelations?  That's having some incredible faith and loyalty.

So Tommy is some vindictive POS, guess he felt slighted by Rusty all these years when Rusty was the star of the DA's office -- really being the chief prosecutor is going to get him women, there are groupies attracted to people who put away bad guys?

Another incredible scene, the kids want to know about the case, about the evidence which could hurt him.  Last week, Jaden the daughter walked out of the dinner when he admitted to having the affair.  This week, she wants to know about the evidence so he lays it out, including admitting that he was obsessed with her right until her death and impregnating her.

The wife and the kids are all calm!

Then Kyle the son, who must be no more than 16, asks why he won't plea to manslaughter, which is 8 years instead of a life sentence for murder.  OK, so it's conceivable that Rusty has talked about his cases at the family dinner table for years, so the kids know about laws and criminal prosecution, though I'm not sure he should be discussing his work, even with his family.  Maybe after the cases are over he could but as they noted, the DA's office will keep a lot of details of cases from the public.

It turns out Carolyn's son was stalking his mother and took many photos and videos of Rusty visiting, including the night she was killed.  Weird kids in this show.  So he was taking pictures, some of which look like they were taken with telephoto lenses, not a phone, when Rusty was visiting his mother so that they would have sex and he's photographing the through the windows, though it seems Carolyn usually closed the curtains, as if she feared someone was photographing them with a telephoto lens.

But in one of those photos, Kyle is hanging around outside while his father is inside with Carolyn, so he apparently knew about the affair before she was killed!

Spoiler

I definitely don't recall the kids having any roles in the movie, though I remember very little about the movie.

I’m really bad with faces, so can someone help me out? Near the end, when we were seeing the photos/videos, there was someone in a helmet riding a bike. Was that the wife? Or daughter? (Please if you’re going to reply, base it on what we saw in the episode only, not the book or movie. Thanks!)

It was Rusty's son.

Oh wow I was way off. But I just went back and rewatched the end, and I see it now. Family resemblance, I guess.

I feel like "respectable man being outed as a cheating scoundrel and mistress ending up murdered" has been done to death (no pun Intended). I don't really see anything unique or special with this one so I'm thinking of just opting out unless I hear good things about the ending.

I find it hard to believe a family would behave so calmly and supportively under these circumstances. I'm actually more interested in Horgan and his wife than Rusty's family. I like the new lawyer Horgan brought on, as well as the judge presiding over the case.

I'm warming up to Ruth Negga at this point. Wonder where it's going with her character and the bartender.

Peter Sarsgaard is really good at being creepy and reptilian.

That's all I've got for this week!

I really hope the ending will be different than the book/movie.

I feel like it has to be and my #1 suspect was her kid so I feel the ending with Rusty's kid is obviously a red herring and probably her child as well, plus I feel like the hog tied piece rules out several people. That was intricate and so much work so maybe there are two killers. But part of me is hoping Rusty did it, he seems to have deluded himself into thinking no one would figure out he was fucking and stalking Carolyn and he lies like breathing so maybe he's just out of his mind and has disassociated from having killed her. If not him, I'm thinking Motola, his hatred of Rusty seems envious and part of it may have been Carolyn rejecting him for Rusty/power.

Spoiler

It is interesting to think about the fact that in 87/90 book/movie Rusty  conceivably got away with his secret for longer due to technology being so much more rudimentary, so even if there were cell phones or DNA getting results would have taken way longer, and he had more time to investigate on his own. But in a 2024 setting him not immediately trying to anticipate by lawyering up immediately and coming clean is weird unless he did it.

I think having Rusty being the killer just doesn’t work because then there is no reason to have more than a one hour show. We have to be able to follow some sort of clues and it can’t be obvious from the the beginning. I hope we find out more about Carolyn than Rusty’s memories.

The actor who plays the new DA, de la guardia... his speech affectation/accent/whatever -- is it really his way of speaking? I feel like he's "doing" a voice. Its super annoying to me! Anyone else?

He is from England and the accent. He's on The Handmaid's Tale, and he has a perfect generic American accent on there. I don't know what's going on with him on this show, but yeah, it's odd.

The accent and facial expressions are weird. I'm going to have to see him in something else to try to figure out what he was doing here.

I feel like the show told us - but didn't show us - that Rusty was a good man. So I tuned in to follow the case because Rusty is shown pretty early not to be so great. Did you ever tune back in? Looks like lots of twists and turns.

Wanting to know and understand seems to be a common thread for all three kids. That's common for a lot of teens with complicated stuff going on at home.

I'm late to respond but I find the kids on the show to be interesting and they help me learn more about the parents. To me, Carolyn and Rusty behave weirdly (abandonment, asking about your lover's wife during sex, stalking, trying to prosecute your lover's murder case) and the kids' behavior is just a response to their parents'.

I feel like the person in the family who flies off the handle the most is Rusty. The rest are all sad, angry, and hurt. The kids are using strong language in front of their parents, who don't correct them because the situation is so messed up. I can't say for sure that Rusty discussed cases at home but I watched Law & Order at that age and definitely knew about manslaughter being a lesser charge. I can see Rusty's son having some knowledge about different pleas and then Googling the rest. Finding out that he knew about Carolyn makes me think the daughter did, too. That would also explained why they don't seem shocked.

With Carolyn's son, Michael, his behavior could be directly caused by being abandoned. Having to watch your mother's life that she didn't want you to be a part of is so sad to me.

I am not sure what Barbara's deal is. I don't think she's with him because she loves him so much - but because she's married to him and has a family with him. Maybe it's a bit of sunken cost fallacy and maybe there's a bit of numbness, too. My husband (no prior knowledge of any version of the story) thinks the wife did it and I'm going back and forth on that. But I will be interested to see more of her story. BTW, I don't think anyone was protesting her. Weren't those reporters? That's not conducive to running a business. It sucks but I can see why her boss asked her to step aside.
