Ever read any of Ruth Goodman's history books? I forget which one it was, maybe "How To Be aTudor" but she spent quite a bit of time explaining the people were a lot cleaner than we are led to believe they were in the old days. Women wore a shift next to their skin, which absorbed all the sweat and so on, outer clothes were clean. Lots of interesting info on how people stayed clean and kept their homes clean too. Really interesting! I love her books, and I've watched all the TV shows she's done with other historians, too. Tudor Monastery Farm, Wartime Farm, Victorian Farm.
