One year one of the kids who was living here and I wanted to plant some containers on the porch. We had no knowledge of vegetable growing whatsoever. (I"m an indoor plant girl). We got a couple of tomato plants and emptied a packet of cucumber seeds into an old recycling bin. They grew like crazy and we had cucumbers all summer. I say do it. 

I just bought a bunch of herbs and potted them up, and another tomato plant. My porch is looking really nice.
