I found this show simultaneously sentimental and hilarious. That's a great mix, and I hope it continues.

By the end of last season, I'd tired of the show and started skipping episodes. But my husband talked me into watching it with him last night, and I'm glad I did. This episode was back to the form that made me love it, for the reasons you cite, @possibilities. The "Asta is my Kryptonite" scene really got to me.

One thing that's never changed for me is my love of the music they use. Was that last song by Van Morrison, does anyone know? It sounded like him, but we couldn't definitively say it was. I searched this morning but can't find any info on the music yet.

Oh, and my trademark shallow observation: Wow, Enver Gjokaj is one good-looking man, especially in that uniform. He'll always be Daniel Sousa (Agent Carter) to me, but he is getting even better with age. I will definitely enjoy watching him until his inevitable bad-guy demise, LOL.

Thought this was a good start to the season! I just caught up with this show recently, and watching season 2 on a binge I could feel the padding that expanded season had - the writing here felt much tighter with mostly all the characters tying into the alien shenanigans in some way. As much as I dislike this being a shorter season, hopefully that means we'll get stronger, more focused storytelling.

I'm glad that Asta wasn't kept in the dark about the new sherrif for too long. Thankfully they've already moved it along so that she and Harry can use it to their advantage. It can be so frustrating when you just want characters to say the thing that will explain what's going on but they choose not to (same thing with not telling Max the truth about the alien tracker, ugh the avoidable conflict!). But I did like the ep's justification that Harry's alien species/ his personality is that he knows best and he's not used to working with others. Plus the reminder that he's emotionally equivalent to a child in how he communicates. And it led to that sweet and funny scene at the end of Harry showing some growth and vulnerability in opening up to Asta.

It was also interesting how they incorporated owls being a bad omen to some indigenous communities. I'd only learned about that watching Reservation Dogs, so that was my first thought when the owl showed up and I liked how they addressed that in the diner scene.

Closed Captions says "Van Morrison - Bein' Green"

Thank you, @AnimeMania! We couldn't make out the words (as much as I love Van Morrison's singing, he can be mush-mouthed). If we could, I would have realized this was Kermit's song. I can now tell my husband that's what he gets for making me turn off the closed-captioning, LOL.

There is a movie whose name I can't remember where people remember an owl at the window and it turns out they've been abducted by aliens.  I assumed that was what the show was referencing.

I’m pretty sure the movie is “Communion”. The stuff about owls being a cover memory for aliens was in the book the movie is based on, and I’m pretty sure it was in the movie but it’s been a really long time since I’ve read the book or seen the movie.

Checked out the IMDB link.  That's not the movie, although there appear to be a lot of similarities. The one I'm thinking of is probably mid-late 2000's and stars an actress who plays a psychologist who moves to a somewhat remote community (PNW or Alaska).  Under hypnosis, a lot of her patients report seeing an owl at the window as they're sleeping.  Eventually she comes to believe they're being abducted and the large eyes of the owls are actually the large of eyes of aliens.  Undoubtedly Grays. (You know, the assholes.)

Found it!  Who knew googling "owls aliens movie" would be so productive?  It's The Fourth Kind.   https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1220198/

The owls are not what they seem!

Twin Peaks aside …. I loved the reaction to the owls.  No one will come near their house ever again, nope, but it is fine, she will be fine.

The owl also has an extremely human face.  Barn owl?

i loved that after Harry made his ‘men ask women out’ speech there was a focus on Darcy holding her fork like she was fighting the urge to stab him with it.  I find Darcy a relatable mess, Narcissistic parents and all, and I somehow hope she finds something for herself by the end of the show.

Oh, man, this is a prescient comment after this week's episode.

Last season was a real hit and miss for me, especially on how much they focused on the uninteresting secondary characters. So, I was quite reluctant to start watching the new season. Well, I am glad I did, the first episode was ok and quite promising. Even the mayor's family did not annoy me!

I'm new to the series, finding it only when Netflix added seasons 1 and 2 this year.  I did a slow binge of both seasons, and just started Season 3.  I'm bummed to read it's a shorter season.  I loved Season 2 having 16 episodes!

Just like in the start of Season 2, I love that the show just completely ignores the aging of the actors playing Max and Sahar and acts like it never happened.  I'm sad that Sahar is leaving, but hoping reports above are correct that she'll be back.

I loved Harry joining the table for "girl talk", especially the "who rules the world? Girls!" line. Though I'm surprised Asta didn't flinch at all when Deputy Gray (Grey?) said he moves around every few months.  That's super weird.

I like Asta and Darcy as roommates, and glad Darcy is in the Alien loop now.  I'm on the fence about the Mayor and wife being abductees.  It does make their story more interesting, but I really don't need them on my screen that much.

I love Alan Tudyk, and I mostly like this show, but Harry gets to be a bit too much for me sometimes.  I thought I'd finally figured it out last season: He's not just an alien, with a different way of thinking and having to learn everything about acting like a human, he's also an idiot.  Not quite.  Asta got it right, he's emotionally immature, which does have some overlap with "idiot" but it isn't really the same.  Suddenly, trading barbs with Max, his juvenile and grade-school insults, it all made sense.  Being selfish and completely unaware of other people's feelings I also put off to him just being an idiot, but immaturity also explains that much better.  Harry has shown himself to be quite intelligent sometimes.  And he didn't kill Asta because that would have made him sad.  Hey, that's progress.

Anyway, I'm glad the show is still going.  We're still catching up, and this season looks promising.
