Season 15, episode 9, 15 December

Sharks- Guest Shark Emma Grede, with Lori, Kevin, Mark, Robert.

Rebel Cheese-an artisanal vegan cheese company, created to appeal to vegans, and not-vegans.  $750k for 5%.   They claim it’s the only artisanal, gourmet vegan cheese on the market.   Over 20 varieties.  Honey Pistachio Chevre, Pimento, Cave Aged Truffle Brie, Sun Dried Tomato Fromage, and  other are the major varieties, with 15 others.    Not in the big players in gourmet groceries.   Margins are 75%.  Prices are comparable to regular cheese.   $2.5 million last year, this year $3.5 million.  Profitable for three years.  Next year they project $7 million in sales.  Sharks say the Brie is just like conventional Brie.

Kevin is out.  Robert and Emma are out.  Mark bids $750k for 10%.   Lori already has Boardarie (charcuterie boards), and wants to go in with Mark . Mark and Lori bid $750k for 10%.  Kevin tells the sellers to take the deal with Lori and Mark.  Mark says he’ll come down to Austin and hand out samples, and I want the video of that.

Mark and Lori make the deal.

The Pocket Panty-emergency underwear. $80k for 10%.   Poor Robert and Mark look like they’re going to faint.   Whenever you need fresh panties, reusable, one size fits all.  (The panties look like hospital panties, that really do fit everyone).   Sales are not great.   Only launched in 2021.   Cost $2.20 per pair, sell for $10 a pair.    $8,000 in 2021, total sales $60,000 in two years.   Lori is out.   (I think Emma will be a good partner for her).   Ashlee the seller doesn’t do online advertising.   Mark tells Ashlee how to pitch her product on social media, and she doesn’t do social media.  Robert is out.  Mark and Kevin are out.   Emma tells Ashlee that the underwear companies could pirate her idea easily.   Emma is out, for now.  She tells Ashlee how to expand her business.

No deal.

Fly With Wine-a suitcase to transport wine bottles. $500k for 8%.  They’re from Napa, CA of course.  For bringing wine bottles home.  They have two other products: VinGarde Valise is so you can check your wine on board the aircraft, VinXplorer wine and beverage backpack.  Inserts hold wine bottles, and are removable.  The backpack has a special drink for each Shark.  $6.25 valuation, with $19 million lifetime sales, last year $5.6 million.   They spend a lot for advertising.

They lost about $100k this year with trade show costs.   Shipping wine home is hideously expensive, and takes a really long time-45 days from France.   They have the patents, and have one investor partner who is a 20% partner, for 10 years, and she controls the manufacture and inventory.   Margins are 60% to 62%.   They did millions on Amazon last year.  Mark is out.  Robert is out. Emma is out.  Lori is out.   Kevin doesn’t like the control of the partner/licenser/manufacturer.   Kevin is out, after admitting he’s a parasite.

No deal.

Cakes Body- Silicone inserts,  an alternative to the traditional bra and prevent NFO (Nipple freak out). Over a million in sales the first year.  Silicone, washable nipple covers.  The sellers are twins.   $300k for 5%.    The sellers put a Cakes spot on Kevin’s head.  Emma wants to know why they’re better than the competition, they’re seam free.   They sold $1 million the first year, and project $5 million this year, with great profits.    90% selling from Tik Tok, and are diversifying.   Margins are 75%.    Mark says to communicate with their customers and see what else they need, Mark is out.   Robert is out. Emma thinks they’re very early in the process, but makes an offer.  Kevin has an offer, $300k at 5% with $1 royalty per set until $1 million back, and keep the royalty until they sell the business.    Emma’s offer is $300k for 12.5%.   The sellers ask where Kevin and Emma would see the business going.

Emma makes the deal, $300k for 10%.   She’ll be a fantastic partner for the sisters.

Update: Blueland, a deal with Kevin (cleaning product, sustainable where you buy the bottle and get concentrate to refill it endlessly).   Now have $175 million in sales.

Haven Lock (iconic moment, where the seller spent endless time to kick the door down).

(Next friday, the 23 no Shark Tank). (I hope I started the topic correctly, I've only done this once before).

How is the panty product any different than putting a pair of your own panties in a Ziploc and stowing it in your purse? Kevin asked this but they just cut to another question before he got an answer.

Also, the underwear that woman was more badly in need of was a good, supportive bra.

That was such an odd outfit.

The nipple twins' upspeak was grating. I don't really understand the nipple covers, but then I am "endowed" and could never go braless...in public. Home is a bra-free zone.

Edited for clarity--to what set of twins was I referring?

I think that if you are coming on a show looking for an investment, you should be professionally dressed, or dressed in a way that fits your product.

That strange belly-baring outfit was none of those things.

My confusion over her resort wear was compounded by my unease at the deeply unsexy men on the panel saying my most hated word "panty" over and over.

I just don't understand the need for the product (just get a $15 six-pack of Hanes or Fruit of the Loom and put them in your glove compartment?). I've been a legal adult for 31 years, and I can't think of a single time that I've needed "emergency" underwear in a tiny zipper bag. Am I doing life wrong?

I so dont get that wine suitcase--my first thought it to put some kind of foeam in there--the cut out that "tranforms" the suitcase looked very cheap and made me think I could make my own insert without having to pay for a brand new suitcase.

Ahh yes I noticed that one ladies outfit and was surprised. but nothing tops the lady several years who came onstage in a shirt dress so short I assumes she forgot her pants.lol.

Yes! That was pretty much all I could see and couldn't focus on the product. The whole outfit wasn't flattering. There is nothing to trademark/patent/copyright about sticking panties in a bag. I've seen the flats in a bag sold at vending machines near clubs but I assume the fabric and design is something specialized enough for a patent or other legality.

How soon before Boarderie starts featuring Rebel cheese?

We had an update on the ecologically responsible cleaning company.

They were talking about using Shopify for their business. They mentioned how when they appeared in Shark Tank, that the website held up fine to cover the business and how great it is for them, even now that they're making a bajillion dollars.

My question: Why would anyone make their own website if this is so awesome? Why doesn't everyone sell through them. What am I missing?

As soon as Lori bullies them into it whether they want to or not.

That was pretty typical of Lori: stating what she will get another business to do for someone else as though she has controlling interest, and they have to do whatever she says because we all know that Lori always knows what's best for them.

Well, it looks like Lori didn't get her way, because the Boarderie site doesn't mention anything about any vegan cheese.
