I really liked this! I agree, despite all the raunchy stuff, it really was more of a coming of age story. The whole controversy over the plot was overblown: just watch the movie before you throw stones. The arrangement was fucked up, despite the good intentions, and they made that clear. And technically they didn’t actually do it, so there’s that.

As for the beach scene, I was surprised at the full nudity.

That was hilarious. I love that they didn’t actually show her naked until she was beating up the teenagers, making it the least sexy way possible.

I died at the finger-trap scene closer to the end. So disgusting and I didn’t see it coming.

Jennifer Lawrence needs to do more comedies. She’s won an Oscar, she’s had her big successful franchise (Hunger Games, not X-Men) now she can do whatever she wants.

Although Andrew Barth Feidman plays real young in a world were adults often play children I chuckled that Percy was 19 and not just 18. So the age difference would be just a flip of Pretty Woman.

I think they explained this by saying that Percy took a gap year before going to Harvard. He was supposed to learn about the world, but I'm betting he spent that year volunteering at the dog shelter and playing video games instead, hence why his parents started to get desperate.

I was thinking they were making sure we weren't thinking barely legal with a just turned 18 character. So just an age gap.

The biggest surprise was JLaw's doing a nude scene at all. Offhand I can't think of actresses of her stature since the 70s where that would happen.

Have you seen/ heard about Red Sparrow? She was nude in that movie like 5/6 years ago. I think it was a flop so many people might not know about it. But she was fully nude in that. I saw some articles about her doing that in this film and people were acting like she had never done it before. Lol and that's not a knock on you or anything. It was just that entertainment news was talking about it like that.

Ok, that was far better than I expected and actually quite heartwarming by the end.

The nude fighting scene on the beach - one of the writers must have liked the naked fight scene in Eastern Promises, but decided to do a funny version.  It was hilarious.  Jennifer Lawrence has pretty great comic timing.

They actually created a lovable character for Percy, not just the stereotypical clueless nerd who's supposed to be grateful and amazed a girl likes him.  Obviously, the were making fun of those tropes, but I really liked him by the end.

That scene was hilarious. The way she swims back over to him as though nothing happened.

did she actually do nudity or was it a stunt double?

Thanks for reminding about Red Sparrow. That was a good film. I saw it in theaters when it came out, although I didn’t remember the nudity.

Just saw this on Netflix and I liked it! This is the first time in long while that I can remember genuinely enjoying Jennifer Lawrence. I mean, she had good acting turns back when she was the IT girl, but this is the first movie that I really enjoyed in a “I wanna see this again” kind of way, because it exuded on the screen that she was really having fun and enjoying herself, and not acting in an Oscar-baity role, which to be fair to her, has been quite awhile. She should do more of these types of movies, she’s on par with Emma Stone, comedy-wise.

It is her! And apparently didn’t even think twice about doing it!

Quote

“Everyone in my life and my team is doing the right thing and going, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure? Are you sure?’” Lawrence said while promoting the film alongside Feldman. “I didn’t even have a second thought. It was hilarious to me.”

Way behind the times but I watched this tonight with my wife. It was a lot of fun and both of us liked it. I wish Hollywood would make more comedies like this with A list actors. Especially more R rated comedies. But even though this movie seems to have been a success, when I look at my local 12 screen multiplex, there are zero comedies playing.

Wow that is interesting. With the way it was shot I thought it might have been CGI nudity.

She looked amazing throughout the movie and the only thing I couldn't buy was that anyone Percy's age would think she looked old.

Relative to its budget, it wasn't a success, unfortunately.

Now, who knows what PVOD, streaming, etc. have added to revenues, but its theatrical returns alone weren't enough to make it a hit.

Google tells me it made a few million shy of double it's budget? That wouldn't make it a blockbuster but for a movie that only cost $45 million wouldn't that be at least a moderate success?
