The Past is the Future: Spoilers and Speculation

Okay -- unless Scott Bakula refused to be a part of this, I'm going with the assumptions that a) Bakula/Sam Beckett is going to be in this at some point, and b) the producers/etc. want it to be a surprise, so of course we haven't heard anything about it. Bakula is still alive and acting, and nearly everyone was dissatisfied with how the original series ended; so to me, there's no way they don't bring Sam back to give him a happy/proper ending - if they can.

With this line from the series synopsis,

Quote

Everything changes, however, when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it. ...

... I'm speculating that somehow Sam leaped into Ben and that's why he made the unauthorized leap. Maybe Sam is trying to find a way to stop leaping.

We'll see what info they give when the show actually airs, but that was my first thought about the "unauthorized leap".

Speculation: At some point Ben will cross paths with Sam. Ben will leap into someone, and Sam will have leaped into someone who is part of the same story.

Scott Bakula is still alive and still acting so a random one episode cameo should be possible. My guess is sweeps week. (Is sweeps week still a thing?)

2x02 and 2x03 synopses:

Quote

"CLOSURE ENCOUNTERS"

After a mysterious incident in New Mexico, two young girls' lives are on the line. Ben meets Hannah Carson (Eliza Taylor joining the cast), who may be more than she appears. TV-PG

2x03 is where this season's mystery/arc is supposed to start.

I don’t know what the endgame is but my guess is that we will see a younger version of Hannah in a future leap. Her interactions with Ben and line about not saying goodbye were too loaded. My first impression was that she knew more than she was letting on.

It was 1949. But yes, probably and possibly; but that what I'm going with for now. If she's not the boss, then she's related or connected somehow.

I’m also thinking she’s connected to that plot. It could always be Hannah’s granddaughter played by the same actress.

(edited)

Hannah was definitely in the preview. Since the actress is a regular, will Hannah be showing up every other episode? Because it would be weird if Ben just happens to run into her every other leap. Unless they have a specific explanation for that, they're going to have to connect her to the present day story/characters somehow.

Yeah, a granddaughter could work.

I agree. My first guess was that she was a time traveler but now I think they are going with a multi-episode arc where the leaps end up changing/saving PQL. Like when Sam’s mission was to help a woman pass the bar and she went on to save PQL. Or the reveal that Sammy Jo grew up to work on PQL.

If you watch the previews and knowing that there are only eight episodes filmed so far and Egypt is the midseason finale. That means the Salem Witch trials is the next episode after this. This means that the Addison Ben breakup lasted two episodes if that, since we hear her talking to him in that episode. Also, he outs himself as a time traveler to Hannah this week.

It's interesting that they showed Hannah making that witch trial joke in the preview, and where does he wind up next?  Ziggy is connected to Hannah somehow , haven't figured out how yet.

Egypt 1961? Im willing to be that Hannah will be there in the midseason finale and that'll likely kick off the whole Love Square sitch.

This episode left me speculating that Ben would leap into a situation to save Tom's wife.

I thought about that too but giving her cancer makes that a little bit harder.  I guess there could be a scenario where he convinces her to go to the doctor sooner than she does but an illness is harder to prevent than an accident.

First two post-hiatus episodes:

"OFF THE CUFF"

01/30/2024 (10:00PM - 11:00PM) (Tuesday) :

When Ben leaps into a bounty hunter escorting the world's most slippery criminal, a deadly pursuit forces them to go into hiding, but Ben quickly realizes this leap is more than meets the eye. Addison faces a difficult decision. TV-PG

"THE FAMILY TREASURE"

02/06/2024 (10:00PM - 11:00PM) (Tuesday) :

A cursed treasure hunt draws Ben to Mexico in 1953, putting him between two estranged siblings struggling with their late father's legacy. As they navigate a series of lethal obstacles, Ben finds the real challenge lies in repairing this broken family's bond. TV-PG

Last three episodes synopses:

Quote

"THE OUTSIDER"

02/13/2024 <...> : An anonymous source sends Ben and an experienced local Denver TV journalist on the trail of a dangerous conspiracy as they pursue the scoop of a lifetime in the early '80s. There's trouble at HQ when Ian's past decisions come back to haunt the team. TV-PG

Quote

"AS THE WORLD BURNS"

02/20/2024 <...> Ben leaps into the body of a Baltimore firefighter in 1974 and is unexpectedly reunited with his time-crossed love, Hannah, and her son, Jeffrey. Trapped in a towering inferno, Ben must find a way to repair their troubled relationship and save their lives before it's too late. TV-PG

Quote

"AGAINST TIME"

02/20/2024 <...> : Ben finds himself behind the wheel of a speeding stock car in 1976, but a terrifying threat from the future could sabotage the leap. Racing against the clock, Ben, Addison and the team must risk everything to complete the mission and save Quantum Leap itself. TV-PG

Seeing that Hannah and Jeffrey will come back, I'm thinking that Jeffrey will find out about Ben and then grow up to become an engineer/scientist working on Quantum Leap. He'll be the guy who writes that code that Tom brought to Ian maybe. Or maybe Ben's letter allows Hannah to save Josh's life and allow them to have another kid together and that kid affects Quantum Leap. I'm trying to figure out if the villain Gideon Ridge could be using an alias and that he's really related to Hannah somehow.

If they don't connect Hannah to QL in some way, then what was the point of her character being a physicist? My best guess at this point is that she was involved in the DARPA research that Tom mentioned as possibly being able to bring Ben home.

Given that Hannah was a grad student in 1955, my head-canon has her being born in 1930. So if Ben ever does make it back to present day, his best chance of finding her will be at a retirement home. And the only way to stay together in the past seems to be for Ben to fail his objective and remain in the body of whomever he leaped into, which is not good on so many levels. So Addison has got to like her chances for a reconciliation.
