Ever since the Untitled Marvel Studios Halloween Special was revealed back in August, it has been all but confirmed to be Werewolf By Night. After The Cosmic Circus and TheWrap both revealed tidbits on the upcoming special, many have wondered as to any future production updates. Some of the things still unconfirmed are who’ll be directing (There’s a certain rumor making the rounds we’re looking to confirm), who will fill out the cast and when production starts. While we cannot tell you who’s directing, we can tell you more details regarding the production start and the casting process.
*  *  *
Sources have informed One Take News that Werewolf By Night hit a small snag a while back and instead of a planned in late February start as planned, it’ll now begin filming sometime in mid-March. We can also confirm that this shoot is planned to be a 2-3 week shooting time as again, this is just a short special. OTN has also heard that casting for the project is going smoothly and that it’s nearly done. While we don’t know who specifically is attached to the project, it’s likely we’ll hear more on the project shortly.

Werewolf By Night is a project that fans should be looking forward to. By introducing Jack Russell, who will be played by Gael García Bernal, this is a stepping stone into introducing the Midnight Sons. The Midnight Sons are a supernatural team consisting of members like Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Morbius, Helstrom, Ghost Rider and of course, Werewolf By Night. The team has become more popular recently and Marvel has commissioned a video game, titled Midnight Suns, surrounding the team and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is part of a plan to introduce the team to the more of the general audience before an MCU project gets announced.

Werewolf By Night stars Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly and will release in late 2022. Are you excited for this special? Let us know!

Giacchino has been tapped to direct Marvel’s untitled Halloween special, which will be gearing up later this month in Atlanta. Little is known about the project, which is sometimes referred to as Werewolf By Night, although sources say that won’t be the title by the time the special airs on Disney+ later this year.

Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly are starring in the one-hour story, with sources believing that Bernal is playing a werewolf.

The After Hours Media Blog hinted that Marvel Studios' Halloween special will use a combination of practical effects and VFX work for Werewolf by Night.

The blog found evidence from a crewman who is working on the Halloween special and a screenshot of a message about "a stunt performer who is in full werewolf makeup." According to that crew member, the MCU's Werewolf by Night will be filmed using practical effects, while there may be CGI touch-ups to complete the look in post-production.

Marvel Studios Confirms More Monsters Coming In the MCU's Future (Exclusive)
By Russ Milheim    September 25, 2022

The special will see long-time composer Michael Giacchino take the directing chair as he weaves a spooky Halloween tale—the first proper horror outing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The adventure will be bringing monsters into the MCU such as the titular Werewolf, the big green Man-Thing, and potentially more.
*  *  *
In an exclusive interview with The Direct's Russ Milheim, Werewolf by Night Executive Producer Brian Gay commented on the future of monsters, such as the Werewolf and Man-Thing, in the MCU.
*  *  *
"I think one of the very cool things about the special is it's just peeling back the corner of monsters in the MCU, right? So there's not just the monsters that are part of Werewolf by Night, but the ones that were up on the wall, there's some of that artwork as well. What all this lends to is the idea that for centuries there have been monsters within the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they've been being tracked or hunted or kept at bay by these hunters."
*  *  *
"And I think, well, we don't know exactly where they'll pop up next, the idea is that, with this wide swath of different species and types, they're going to pop up again. You're going to see these guys in different ways, of course.

That's what I was thinking when I first saw the ads for it. There was a thing in the back of my head going, "Is it gonna turn out that the MCU made a whole TV special of an in-universe monster movie as, like, an elaborate way to announce Gael Garcia Bernal as Wonder Man?" But as I got into into it, I really enjoyed it.

Sure, the monster movie homages aren't subtle. I enjoyed the ever-present score (right from the opening Marvel credits, it was very "Michael Giacchino has entered the chat!!"), the intense use of shadow from the black-and-white, and even the practical effects on the werewolf. But to me, it wound up being a lot more than just Marvel Does a Monster Movie! I loved Jack. Gael Garcia Bernal was fantastic, especially when he was in the cage with Elsa, slowly realizing what was about to happen and trying to figure out what he could do--just the moment where Elsa asked if "remembering someone's scent" had ever worked before, and Jack simply replied, "Once," was enough to make me want a whole movie with him. The shot of him looking at all the taxidermied monster heads in the mansion and realizing he could be next was chilling. And Man-Thing/Ted was a delight. I loved Elsa's freaked-out yet bewildered interactions with him, and his relationship with Jack was so cute.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and felt the 20s/30s/noire-type style added to my enjoyment. I like when Marvel is more than just entertainment. This, to me, seemed to be posing the question of what is a monster. Bernal and Donnelly (Elsa) were great in this as well. Anyway, I can say more but am tired. I highly recommend though.

What's Black and White and Red all over?

I am not sure why Jack would touch the Bloodstone, he said Elsa could have it.

That werewolf looked like a load of crap, but other than that, I guess it was fine.

That little unlocked door was mighty convenient, if only Jack had seen it when he first burst out of his cage.

I knew the old Cranker would be fine, I saw him hiding behind the coffin.

Who puts "This End Up" with a Arrow, on the bottom of a coffin anyway?

Good thing Elsa doesn't have any "Mommy Issues".

I really thought they would go for the gag where as the credits roll you see the silhouettes of people standing up and walking out in front of the screen. Although better than Shang and Katy would be Sam and Bucky with Sam being shocked that this was Bucky's favourite movie (the reveal that WBN is actually a movie from the 30's). Because while I liked it, it's hard to wrap my head around how the weird over the top acting and dated special effects fit into the MCU. Although the animated shadow thing when Jack transformed was cool.

Although I do like another reminder that when SHIELD was full of Nazi's it was totally inept. Because not only were they not aware of Djinns and an immortal crime lord but also monsters and a secret society that hunts them.

That's what you get when you order it from some kind of off brand version of the Disney Imagineering shop.

I did like Elsa though and am interested in seeing more of her. And when she and Jack were stuck in the crypt and he scratched his ear repeatedly like a dog, that was funny.

Werewolf By Night - Intro and Q&A with Director Michael Giacchino at Fantastic Fest World Premiere
DigrenMTG   Oct 7, 2022

Quote

Director Michael Giacchino introduces his special television feature at its secret world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 25, 2022, and he answers questions after the screening.  Q&A contains spoilers for the show, so please pause and watch the episode before proceeding.

That was...ok. I didn't feel too invested in the story and I don't generally like horror/monster movies so the homage means little to me, but I did come away liking Jack, Elsa, and Ted and would like to see them again. If this was meant to be their introduction into the larger Marvel universe then it worked, but I'd prefer if next time we see them it was in a more traditional Marvel setting than a cheesy monster movie.

I am a big fan of Universal horror, so this was right up my alley. You can tell how much Michael Giacchino is a fan of the genre, I loved all of the shout outs and homages. The beginning with the semi philosophical narration, the shadows everywhere, the practical werewolf effects, the film getting burned, they really nailed the vibe. I really do like that the Disney+ shows are letting the MCU do different things and play around with genre, like making a Halloween special that's also an homage to classic monster movies.

Even beyond the novel appeal of "Marvel does a horror movie!" I do also think that this asked some interesting questions about what it means to be a monster with good characters and an engaging story. The monster hunters can go on about how they want to rid the world of the "evil" monsters but from what we've seen they're murderers who attack innocent people because they happen to not be quite human, while the monsters are willing to risk their lives to help their friends and people who are decent to them. I love Gael García Bernal and he made Jack a really fun, likable protagonist, his bond with Man-Thing was really sweet as was him bonding with Elsa. I also liked what we saw of Elsa and Man-Thing/Ted, I am not sure how much marvel wants to keep using these characters, but I really hope that we can see them show up again in some more traditional MCU projects, as well as some other monsters.

It continues to crack me up just how many secret societies and ancient organizations and creatures and things exist in the MCU, all completely independent of each other. Nick Fry had no idea how right he was when he told Tony way back in Iron Man that he was only one small part of a bigger universe. The Bloodstones and their fellow hunters are ridiculously extra even by secret society standards, I truly respect that. They might be violent murderers, but I can only applauded using a flaming tuba as a part of their funerals and making your corpse into the Crypt Keeper.

The only thing I didn't really get is how Jack got the invite to the monster hunter wake/convention. Like Elsa's mom (step mom?) said he had 100 monster kills. But he was obviously there to save his friend Ted. So how did he build up that reputation in what seems like a pretty small, connected group?

It just perfectly captured the atmosphere.  It has a great balance of sincerity, camp, and outright comedy.  I loved the choice to make the werewolf a low-tech looking, traditional movie wolf man while juxtaposing it against a well done Man-Thing.

There is so much care taken in the costuming and set dressing.  I loved Jack's 'vertebrae' tie at the beginning, and as soon as I saw "This End Up" on the back of the coffin I knew exactly what I was watching.

I did not realize the character's name was Jack Russell until the end credits and I laughed really, really loudly at that.

I thought this was fantastic, the best thing I've seen from Marvel in awhile.  It's probably not well known that Marvel had its line of horror comics with characters that sometimes interacted with their superhero lineup.  Groot actually first appeared as a tree monster in one of their old science fiction comics.

There are only two criticisms I can come up with, neither of which affected my enjoyment of the special:  I wonder how Jack got his invite to the Bloodstone funeral.  They were supposed to be monster killers, and he supposedly had 100 kills, but they didn't know he was a monster himself?  Did they just take his word on the kills?  Anyway, I was able to hand wave it.

The other is I thought they made Man-Thing look just a bit too cutesy/cartoony.

13. WEREWOLF BY NIGHT (2022)
...
Cheeky in the same way as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special but a lot more nuanced in its sense of play, the one-off (so far) Halloween special Werewolf by Night leans heavily on classic Hollywood horror and Hammer Film Productions movies for its particular brand of self-aware cheese. But it also tells a solid (though abbreviated) story about misfits facing off and teaming up to address a power shift in a family of monster-hunters. It doesn’t feel like a part of MCU continuity — the tone and look are radically different from any previous MCU story, which is a breath of fresh air — but longtime Disney composer turned director Michael Giacchino confirms that it’s part of the MCU narrative, which raises a ton of fun questions about the implication of this weird, gleefully ghoulish little side story. —TR
