S02.E03: For He Is a Liar and the Father of Lies

Looks like they're are going to tease the Keef/Kelvin UST again this season, and throw out little nuggets of WTH little by little, and I'm loving it.  Their scene together was thick with... something and every time they have a scene together, I sit there waiting for one of them to make a move, and I'm loving that too.

On the other hand, I don't get Kelvin's regime of punishment and imprisonment - it goes past comedy and goes into some dark, sadistic area that I'm finding unsettling. He treats his squad like slaves, has them doing hard labor and putting them in bamboo cages similar to those in The Deerhunter, all while Kelvin seems to get some sick jollies out of it. Kinda creepy.

I cracked up when that bowling alley floozy uncrossed her legs and flashed her vagoo ala Sharon Stone in "Basic Instinct" and again at Eli's recounting of his episode with his lady friend and her shaver.  I was sure the kids were going to blackmail Eli for the $10M they need for the timeshare community with his suspected murder.  Instead they're outraged at Eli having a date and "cheating" on their dead mother and not being a murderer.  What a family of wackos.

Unless I blinked and missed it, seems they skipped showing wiener in this episode, breaking the routine.  Maybe next week they'll be back.

Heh, I love that the Gemstone siblings honestly were more upset over Eli being with someone other than his late wife/their mother then over him possibly being a murderer.  But it looks like might not behind the reporter's death after-all and now all of them wonder if it was Junior instead.  I'm guessing that won't be the case either.  Obviously, Junior isn't a trustworthy person, but I have a feeling something else is at play here.

Kelvin's God Squad stuff certainly took a dark turn indeed!  Judging from what he was yelling at the end, I think a lot of his cruelty is coming from how he feels Eli thinks of him as an annoying, useless child and he is using this as an outlet of some kind.  Just one that really, really isn't healthy, to put it mildly.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that gravy dispenser in the fast food joint is actually a thing.

Loved the old Christian amusement park and all of the goofy names the rides were labeled.

Maybe the neighbor the reporter was rude to. Or the Butterfields. Seems odd that the show cast a fairly well known actor to play the reporter, only to kill him off so quickly. Maybe there will be flashbacks.

Were there multiple dead bodies shown in episode 2?  I was confused.

The siblings are so over-the-top self-centered and odd—the actors’ comedic work on this show is stellar.

There were at least three. The reporter in the house(who appeared to be shot through the temple), the smoking body, spotted by Kelvin, next to the car and a body in a tree near the car.

I thought the first body by the car was Junior. Lol

How do they not know that Kelvin is closeted with his homoerotic god squad thing?

He must be getting a decent allowance to house and feed all those men.

Jesse can't muster up $10 million to invest in that Florida scam but Kelvin spends his allowance on the god squad?

Of course this show is going to go there with manscaping and highly suggestive visuals.

Kelvin's God Squad is for church so that's probably how Eli was somewhat fine with funding it. It seems though as if the children don't really have access to the liquid assets. They all live in huge mansions on Eli's property, so they really don't have to worry about paying for anything. Eli, or most likely his staff probably handle the family's personal financial needs, because he is all about control. I wouldn't be at all shocked if it came out that the kids didn't even know how to pay a bill. I wonder if Judy was embezzling from the tithes not only for the sake of being greedy but a way to have her own cash.

I went looking into the actor who plays Titus and found out that he used to play for the Las Vegas (then Oakland) Raiders.

Of course the Gemstone siblings are more freaked out about their dad dating then him possibly killing people. Although I do wonder if there is more to the story that Eli's telling the kids, and if nothing else I am sure that obviously sketchy Junior is a part of it. Or maybe it was that guy the reporter was a dick to in the first episode and they will totally go in a different direction, I can see that happening as well.

Gideon really is the smart one. He knows that if granddad wanted someone dead, he would hire a hit man, he's too smart to kill someone on his own. Also, if all the biblical names in the world, why would Jessie and Amber name their son Pontius? Did they just want him to be a problem child?

Kelvin's God Squad has certainly taken a turn towards the creepy cult-y. He very clearly feels underappreciated by his family so he takes out his need for power on the guys in his creepy body building cult. They also keep moving forward with whatever it is between Kelvin and Keith, which is probably not making him any more stable, considering...what he is probably in denial about.

The old Christian amusement park and its pun names was hilarious, I would love to see it again.

I think everyone knows except Kelvin.

I actually think they would do a ministry around it and be okay with it. I remember Danny's character thinking his son was gay last season and actually being supportive.

I watched the eyes of Tammy Faye and she was supposedly not homophobic despite being a part of a pretty despicable organization.

Also, courting LGBTQ would mean more money and that is really what the Gemstones worship.

But if they were so tolerant, why is he closeted?

Eli may allow him to live with that guy in one of the Gemstones mansions in an openly gay relationship.

But maybe Kelvin fears being mercilessly trolled about it by Judy, who’s also married to a guy in denial about being gay, and Jesse.

In a decades old Seinfeld episode where Jerry and George are mistaken for a gay couple, the tag line, recited by almost every character appearing in the episode about being gay is that, while they are not gay, "not that there's anything wrong with that." It's one thing to express openness and tolerance of others, but it's another whole deal to accept it for yourself, especially for those brought up in particular evangelical environments.

And Teslas (specifically like the Model X shown in this episode) are not hard to use and don't have a "key" or any physical lock. Instead they synch with your phone, though a fob is also available. It's not all that credible that Judy would be so confused about routine driving or door closing.

I think they would be tolerant but I don't know for sure.

Eli might have some old fashioned homophobic values.

The ex Satan worshipper guy that Kelvin lives with seems so sweet and confused.

Kelvin is not even close to being self aware enough to acknowledge what seems obvious to us.
