When Calvin and Tina enlist the services of a professional matchmaker for Marty, they can't help but get too caught up in the process; Dave and Gemma adopt new roles during an unexpected date night.

Suraya should have just consulted with Marty after she got frustrated with the parents. It is not like she didn't have access to Marty, since they are friends.

Is it really that hard for someone like Marty to meet women who share his interests? Why doesn't he have any friends? There have to be a zillion D&D groups or other such things in the city, and he could meet people who would be into his same interests.

Yes. Dating is brutal & very hard.

 

Marty getting down on himself because he is still single, living with his brother next door to his parents was so stupid. He already lived on his own, it was his decision to move back there.

I thought it was believable. Didn't they have an episode where he admitted having Tina do his laundry because it gave him an excuse to come home (because he's lonely on his own)? I can see him feeling a bit of self-pity feeling like he's back tracking.

Was really hoping the matchmaker would come back at the end to introduce Marty with the perfect match she'd picked.

Marty is a catch. He has a great job, he's kind and reliable, he has a good relationship with his family. But he doesn't put himself out there. he goes after women based solely on their glam, and doesn't go for women with other attributes. And he's tongue tied and low self-esteem. But honestly, IRL, I think he'd have plenty of prospects.

The pants were bad but the purple tank top looked stunning against her skin.

He is. I think if he joined a meetup about his interests, he’d do well. He’s had love interests before on the show. I don’t think he’s going any worse than any other 20something. Dating is tough.

I was so annoyed that they didn't just show him the woman's profile that Suraya had chosen,  they had the full folder of profiles on the coffee table. 

This show is going the route of the Goldberg's where,  no matter how out of line the family is in their behavior,  all is forgiven because they meant well.

Yeah, I kept looking at the folder, and thought, "Why don't you just hand it to him? He can read them and reach out to whomever he's interested in."

Sadly, the show seemed to think making Marty a loser whose family is so self-absorbed they want to set him up with their own dream dates instead of his own, was somehow funnier than the potential of actually pursuing the potential of Marty actually having a girlfriend, and how him being happy would upset the family dynamic. 

I think if Marty had a girlfriend who was compatible with him, it would have a lot of potential. The two of them interacting with the rest of the family could be really funny.

Given the new, "serious topical" approach that the show has in Season Four, I really figured they were going to use this episode to "out" Marty. I half expected him to abruptly click with one of the male guests at the party. They could have played it as a surprise revelation to everyone, Marty included.  Maybe they were just laying the groundwork for a future episode, since no match was made, or even hinted at.

Frankly, I find it strange that the matchmaker would not have approached Marty directly after the parents were taking over. Marty agreed that he was receptive to being 'introduced' so no need for the lady to just drop out without a word to her client...Marty. I hope the show has him meet the right woman by chance, on his own. Yes, he is a good catch, well educated and has a good career ahead of him..he's also a very nice, decent guy as is his brother, who also might benefit in meeting someone. This would expand the writing for this family.

My impression was that the parents were paying the matchmaker, so technically Marty wasn't her client. But he could probably afford to pay her himself if he wanted to. The show seems to forget that he's got a well-paying job.

Both brothers have had girlfriends. Malcolm had someone who Gemma set him up with, a teacher at her school. He was in love with her but she left to take a job out of the country, and if I recall correctly there was a whole thing about how he didn't think he was good enough for her, I think. Marty had a girlfriend who was a scientist like him (I think that's how they met, maybe they worked together?) but she was an atheist, which didn't jibe with Marty, I think? It definitely didn't jibe with Tina, who has been shown to be active in her church. I remember Marty also had a crush on a woman who lived in his building but she wasn't interested.
