Spider-Man Noir Live-Action Series in the Works at Amazon (EXCLUSIVE)

The untitled series will follow an older, grizzled superhero in 1930s New York City. An individual with knowledge of the project says that the show will be set in its own universe and the main character will not be Peter Parker.

This is the second known project based on the Sony-controlled Marvel characters at Amazon Prime Video and MGM+. It was previously announced that Amazon was moving forward with the series “Silk: Spider Society” from showrunner Angela Kang, with several other shows in the works. It is unknown at this time which other Marvel characters will be featured in the other Amazon shows, though Sony currently controls over 900 such characters associated with the Spider-Man franchise.

Oren Uziel will serve as writer and executive producer on the Spider-Man Noir show. Uziel developed the show along with “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and former Sony boss Amy Pascal, who all executive produce. Pascal executive produces via Pascal Pictures. Sony Pictures Television is the studio, with Lord and Miller currently under an overall deal there.

Set to be the next installment in Sony's superhero universe, which features Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy and both Venom movies, Madame Web will star Dakota Johnson as the titular Cassandra Web, a paralyzed mutant whose clairvoyant abilities allow her to see into the "spider world". Sweet Girl's Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Zosia Mamet, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott round out the supporting cast.

"I can't wait to be able to be next to the girls that I filmed with – Dakota and Isabela, and Celeste. We had so much fun together. And I'm really excited that it's just gonna be a powerhouse of badass females for the world to see."

Pascal also said a fourth “Spider-Man“ movie with Tom Holland and Zendaya is still in the works, but the writers strike has paused development. “Are we going to make another movie? Of course, we are,” she said. “We’re in the process, but the writers strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.”

Sony boss Tom Rothman was much more cagey about the future. He laughed, “If I told you, I’d have to kill you.”

The third Venom movie will go out July 12, 2024 (the studio was already holding that date for an untitled film). The film stars Tom Hardy as the Marvel anti-hero, with his longtime writing partner Kelly Marcel stepping into the director’s chair. It shut down production in Spain amid the actors strike earlier this month.

In other moves, Madame Web is moving up two days to Valentine’s Day from Feb. 16, 2024. The Spider-Man spinoff stars Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, and it hails from filmmaker S.J. Clarkson.

I was wondering when they would admit the 2024 release wasn’t happening. Based on reports they hadn’t even begun production when Across the Spider-Verse was released.

 Interesting. Not sure one way or the other, but in the maybe column. Given you have other spider women in there, my bet is Sony is positioning this for spinoffs. However, given the reactions I've seen so far, I'm not so sure that's a great plan. Whatever happened to the days of 'do a good movie and then do another one'?

Just ignore me, I'm yelling at clouds over here. :)

I don't really think so.  I think they are just trying to establish them as a unit or "team", focusing on the bond between all of the women.  That seems to be what the movie will be centered around.

I recognize them from various 2000s-era Spider-Man stories, but I'm sure general audiences won't have any idea who they are.  I think Sony will be betting on "looks like a Spider-movie" to draw audiences in, judging by the trailer.

I didn't even know that this movie was a thing until a few days ago and it comes out in February. 

I'm sort of intrigued by it because whilst some of the dialogue in the trailer seems a bit hokey, this does have a really good cast. 

It doesn't really seem that they're playing up the Spider-Man connection per se in what marketing there is right now though,. Although considering that CBMs aren't necessarily doing great right now, that perhaps not a bad thing.

According to Boxoffice Pro, the upcoming superhero team-up movie is currently tracking to earn between $25 million and $35 million in its opening weekend at the box office. If Madame Web does end up launching somewhere in that range, it would mark the lowest opening weekend yet for the SSU franchise. Morbius currently has the worst SSU opening weekend at $39 million, followed by Venom ($80.3 million) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($90.1 million). Even if Madame Web comes in on the higher end of its tracking, its opening would still be lower than The Marvels, another female-fronted superhero team-up movie, that opened in November 2023 with $46.1 million.

Kraven will tank just as badly.

All these "spider verse" movies are just dumb and make no sense without Spiderman, because otherwise no one care about these characters.

I'm actually surprised one movie made it over 50%

I don't think that these movies need Spider-Man at all.  They all make sense and can work just fine without him. 

The real problem is that Sony keeps turning out bad scripts.  The effort just isn't there, unfortunately.  It's a shame, because I think something like Madame Web could have ended up doing well in better hands.

I'm not surprised that the Venom movies did as well as they did, given the character's popularity.

Its not even that these movies cant be good without Spider-Man, its that these movies aren't good and they're picking really weird characters to build movies around. I saw Madam Webb this weekend and not only was it truly terrible, it felt like either a prequel to an already existing franchise or like it was setting up a franchise, which it is clearly not.

I'm not a Kraven fanatic. Meaning  I do know that the  character exist level but never bought a book because he was after Spider-Man that month. But the trailer looked good to me. If nothing else is going on that weekend and the reviews are so bad that they scare me off I will probably be in that first week box office number.

I wonder if part of the problem is that they are holding the really good characters in reserve for use in the MCU Spider man movies. Like a Green Goblin origin movie could be interesting or a Joker style movie about the scorpion. But maybe they are saving the Goblin for Spidey 4. And Scorpion has kind of been introduced in Homecoming.

Sure but the Venom movies didn't have very good scripts but they still made a ton of money. It still seems like picking less popular characters isn't helping things.

It also helps that Tom Hardy's Venom has a type of humor that's appealing to a larger segment of fans.  Get the right actor in the role and that can carry a mediocre script on charisma alone.  Matt Smith knew what type of movie he was in and escaped from Morbius unscathed because he went big, but unfortunately he wasn't the lead.

The film is based on the Marvel antagonist to Spider-Man and has a story by Richard Wenk and screenplay by Wenk and Art Marcum & Matt Holloway.

Its new Dec. 13 date has some competition already, with Warner Bros.’ and New Line’s animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim also opening that day.
