Solid second episode.

The whole pepper shaker plot was great. The dealer immediately knowing what Ava's deal was. The way he sympathized with her but still wouldn't sell the shaker. The way she had to extort it out of him.

Deborah's almost on autopilot at this stage of her career and yet she still works harder than Ava. Ava didn't study up for her interview last episode,  She upcycled old jokes. Deborah read everything Ava's ever written and she doesn't even really like having Ava around.

Kayla is still hilarious.

I just kind of wanted to slap Ava.  It's one thing to not be thrilled with a job.  It's another to act like the job is beneath you.  I was happy that Deborah put her in her place.

I really like Jean Smart in this.

I liked this episode even more than the first one (which did a great job setting up the entire premise). I hope we get to see Troy from Broad City and his assistant every week. They are both hilarious.

I agree. I get that this isn't your dream job, but if you want to KEEP this job then at least make an effort. And if you really don't want this job, then quit and take your chances that someone else will be willing to hire you after your debacle. At least this job is in the industry she wants to work in. Would she rather work as a cashier for minimum wage? Lots of people in the business would kill for the opportunity to work with an established vet just for the experience and Ava was acting like she was being asked to scrape dog shit off the bottom of her shoe.

Ava might not like Deborah's brand of humor but at least Deborah has a work ethic.

Man I’d LOVE an opportunity to live in a casino and write jokes for someone like Deborah! Not for the rest of my life but for a year or something I think it would be really interesting! You can write about all your experiences too! Ava is acting like she’s in prison.

I really like how the show demonstrates her final awareness of how she really doesn’t have any options left and how many conversations it took with her agent to fully get it.

I think it’s playing into her entitlement that she feels this job is beneath her … Debra pointed it out to her .. this was basically handed to her she just was on the internet and was “found” Debra had to claw her way to get where she is and still has to fight.  A lot of people today think they should be rewarded for just showing up without having to put in any effort… that it’s “unfair” not to be instantly rewarded for putting in the bare minimum… Debra wasn’t allowed the luxury of bare minimum

Loving the show.  It’s partly about clashing generations.  Ava thinks Deborah’s Vegas act is bland and hacks, out of touch and yes beneath her.

I guess the Pepper Shaker plot just underlines that I don’t get the rich.  It’s a rare, beautiful antique but it would not please me to possess it, to put it in that cabinet as Deborah does with her other objets d’art.  Don’t particularly want a Rolls either, no matter how much money I had.

Her palace of a home looks like a knockoff of something a king built in Europe a few hundred years ago.  Would it make me happy?  Not really, not even the soda fountains.  I’m much older than Ava but I get her reaction to Deborah’s choices and taste.  She brings up something to her about climate change?  Might as well be speaking to her in Esperanto.

But Vegas acts stars not only project that certain kitsch luxury style on stage, they actually live it.  Someone like Liberace probably believed that his fans aspired to be able to dress like him if they had the money.  Similarly Deborah thinks her fans from Florida love her QVC tchotchkes.  The casino owner boss thinks he has to have hipper acts to attract the Millenials and Gen Z but Vegas will still have a place for stars like Deborah for a long time.

This is one area where I think the numbers don't lie and support her belief that they love the crap she's selling - if her stuff wasn't selling well on QVC, they wouldn't continue featuring her merchandise. It wouldn't be worth QVC's time unless her products were selling. I think the sales are probably some fans who will buy anything she puts her name on as well as regular QVC shoppers who are looking for affordable merchandise.

I don't sympathize much with Ava, but she doesn't make me actively want to reach into the TV screen and staple her mouth shut like Kayla does. Seriously, if I were Jimmy I'd jump ship to another talent agency as quickly as humanly possible.

Her frenzy to get the peppershaker was in part because she owned the saltshaker! Antique collectors are absolutely crazy that way, at whatever price point!

So were we to take it from how Jean Smart played it, that she was at first madly ecstatic about getting the pepper shaker.  But then once she put it in the cabinet with all the other objets, it kind of seemed almost sad and pointless?
