Snow Apple January 28, 2021 Share January 28, 2021 I'm almost about to give up on this show just because I can't stand the daughter. She treats Jean like crap, and also act like she belongs in a nursing home instead of a woman in her 50's. Although I like the other characters, the show just isn't good. 3 Link to comment
LakeGal January 28, 2021 Share January 28, 2021 I wanted to like this show because of Kyra. But I just could not finish the last episode. Another one bites the dust for me. 4 Link to comment
JenLily January 28, 2021 Share January 28, 2021 Sigh. I just don't think this show is very good. The biggest problems for me are her kids. I actually like the rest of the cast and would've been fine with this being a fish-out-of-water show for Kyra's character, moving from a small town in the Midwest to LA and meeting all sorts of new people. But the kids are dragging her down. I bet if the show wasn't so hyper focused on the kids being frustrated with their "needy, pathetic old mom" the writers wouldn't feel the need to dumb down Kyra's character so much. I wish they'd just get rid of the kids somehow. 7 Link to comment
DanaK January 28, 2021 Share January 28, 2021 Better but still not that good. I agree that the kids are bringing it down. The ratings are pretty bad at about 0.4 so this likely won’t get another season Link to comment
shapeshifter January 28, 2021 Share January 28, 2021 I thought I was done with this show, but then put it on (because of Kyra? or maybe because of Kyra's hair?) and actually loved the bit at the end with the daughter saying no and then saying "ding ding ding" to "ring a bell" to let her mom know she meant "yes" because that's a lot like how my daughters and I sometimes relate. So. Show. You've got one more chance with me. Don't blow it! 1 Link to comment

They're annoying (and the actors are not good) but I think that the real problem with the show is that it lacks creativity or originality. Unlike TBBT or Mom which can still surprise me with the direction they take even after years on TV, Call Your Mother seems to go the expected route every time. Her son is clingy to Mommy, her daughter is a super achiever who resents her mother's attentions to her brother. The sexy neighbour is attracted to her but by the third episode, his ex is calling him on it. It's way too soon, and the nail gun joke was eyerolling. There are moments of good writing and Kyra is great but they need better ideas for the show. Do something original. 3 Link to comment
Packerbrewerbadger January 29, 2021 Share January 29, 2021 The Closer was one of my all time favorite shows : fantastic writing, talented actors with amazing chemistry. I don’t know how Kyra can come to work in the morning to this dribble. I guess I catch Closer reruns, they never get old. 4 Link to comment

In 2017 Kyra starred in a drama that ran for 10 episodes before being mercifully axed, Ten Days in the Valley. I'm not sure if this show is better, but at least it's under half an hour. I see now that she also appeared in 12 episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, starting with 2.2. I never got into that show, but maybe I'll check out a few of those episodes to see if her character works better since that's an Emmy winning show with other respected actors. Link to comment

She was hilarious in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Loved her character and hope she pops in again. 1 Link to comment

cmahorror February 3, 2021 Share February 3, 2021 (edited) Wow - I love Kyra Sedgwick but this is just not funny. There is potential but the writing is bad. So the daughter completely rejects her mom and then gets upset because her mom listens to her as does what she asked? That is BS. If you want your mom to come back with you, say it. You are an adult and have the ability to communicate so use those skills. I think I am out - the kids need to go, and maybe focus on a 50-something widow embarking on a new romance after years of being alone. There would be a lot of opportunities that could be comedic but also serious, like Mom. Like Allison Janney, Kyra Sedgwick is an actress capable of that careful balance needed to pull off both emotions in the same scene. Edited February 3, 2021 by cmahorror 2 Link to comment

They could have had Kyra’s character move to LA to be near the kids but then made use of the sprawl and the traffic to have her mostly communicate with them via text and phone, in which we only hear her side and only see the kids briefly every third or fourth episode––which Kyra could have easily made entertaining. But it’s too late for that now. 1 Link to comment

The show "Mom" started out with Christy raising her 2 children, with her mom showing up and being part of the family. The show has evolved from that to the 2 children sort of being "Chuck-Cunninghamed" and bringing the focus of the show to Christy and her mom and their AA group. So I think Call Your Mom can evolve too, based on what is working and what is not. Edited February 3, 2021 by roughing it 2 1 Link to comment
