  1. Too bad Mamie was not involved in that push.
  2. Fun fact. My father bought what would become our family cottage on a lake backed by woods in the early 70's. It was named Back of the Moon by the previous owner. I think to this day it has fewer amenities than the one in the film - no electricity or running water and an outhouse with a pail system (so you dig a hole and dump it every few days). It is only accessible by boat and a great place to escape to. Yes, there is internet, but I choose to have a cell phone plan for emergency only. But let me make this clear, the only murders that will be conducted are by my cat toward mice 😀
  3. Speaking of film noire and Gene Tierney and Vincent Price - have any of you seen Leave Her to Heaven?
  4. I think she said brunello - a very expensive type of wine.
  5. I spent too much time reading CNN. I did get 10/10 on the weekly quiz. Also thought about adopting a cockapoo puppy/dog. The cat talked me out of it.
  6. @Acmeproducts I disagree, they are still standing at the beginning of most shows I watch, which is during the evening hours. I will admit, I turn off when Abby Phillip comes on (can't stand her studdering plus doe eyes) and Laura Coates (too harsh a voice).
  7. haha I still remember the first time I heard the Bat Out of Hell album. It was maybe a year or so after it came out. And I was at a party hosted by a high school friend in her parents backyard. So summertime. There might have been some underage drinking involved. But I was barely 17 and fully dressed. After all these years, I do agree Paradise is the best song from that album, but the others are also great.
  8. So yesterday (Christmas) I baked a tourtière that I had purchased at the church Christmas Fair a month ago. The good ladies cook the filling, then put it in raw pie dough and freeze it. Served it with a salad with cranberry vinaigrette. It was amazing - can't remember the last time I tasted such such a flaky pie crust so I know there was lard in it. And a hint of cloves in the meat filling - delish and festive. Today when I took the leftover pie out of the fridge, I could see all the lard on top, grins. Anyway it re-heated perfectly in the oven.
  9. Re the discussion regarding delivery. I have spent all day waiting for a package that requires signature to be delivered. Before 9am I posted a note on my door to say I am home, please ring door bell. When the delivery person finally showed up after 6pm he knocked on the door. What the heck? Can they not read? And I didn't have to sign anything - just confirmed my name. While waiting I did manage to get the wreath for the door made and hung - an old grape vine circular inserted with fresh cut cedar boughs, lights and a trio of bells. It does cover my knocker. Which makes the decision not to use a door bell even more preposterous.
  10. I used to have a crazy neighbour that took it upon himself to pour turpentine on an ant hill that had formed in my front yard. It was years before I could get the grass to grow back. Just Googled, and found this. Might work for you. https://valiantarborist.com/blog/ways-to-kill-tree-stump-naturally/
  11. @Netfoot Do you like children? And do stores hire "Santas" over the holiday? I am thinking you would make a perfect one. Just think of it - a Jolly red suit, some extra padding and sit in a chair all day 😀
  12. As a Canadian, I have seen the episode and I highly encourage everyone to watch or tape it for viewing on Friday (when there is no Y&R). It is I think good background for those not watching 30 years ago for the mystery plot that will play out next week. Plus it is fun to watch so many actors that were on our screens this week when they were younger 😀
  13. As I recall, there are no new episodes in the U.S. Thurs and Fri of Thanksgiving week and Tues (Cdn) will probably be full of turkey dinners. So will be a few days before we learn exactly what Cole, Claire and Jordan are up to.
  14. Not to ignore the previous posts, but I wanted to share something. Never underestimate the power and comfort that comes from picking up the phone and calling someone. In this case I looked up the number for one of my father's former partners (my father passed away 30+ years ago). He was so happy to hear from me. We shared stories. And I got the contact info for another person I wanted to reach out to.
  15. Now we know the background of Gloria's problems in Thailand 😉 Glad Christian is doing well and look forward to seeing him again.
  16. Re Cranberry sauce. I use fresh cranberries and after rinsing and sorting out the bad ones, add water and white sugar and the zest of one orange. Then peel the orange and chop the fruit and add it and the juice to the cranberries. Simmer until popped then add a dollop of brandy and stir in while they cool. Store in a mason jar in the fridge. This combination results in a good liquid sauce with whole berries. I know I am vague on quantities but last year I think it was 1 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar. The orange and juice adds liquid and sweetness. The brandy is supposed to be about 1-2 tbsp and added before cooking but I add more like 1/3 cup (=heavy dollop) since I like to taste it. And I go low on sugar since I like tart. Also the reason for general quantities - anyone else noticed how the package of cranberries is getting smaller every year so they can keep the price the same? For the person who mentioned two for one - the cranberries I buy say they can be frozen in their package. I would be hesitant to do this because there are always brown/mushy ones but you could rinse/sort and then freeze. Apparently after freezing they are soft when you thaw. I don't know if it is the addition of brandy but my cranberry sauce lasts a long time in the fridge. In fact I had some of what is left from Christmas with chicken fingers tonight 😀
  17. @shapeshifter - Great suggestion, but I live in Canada where there is a shortage of doctors so I don't have one. Plus I like to live under the delusion that they would probably only deliver bad news and no news is good news 😁
  18. Thank you for your well thought out and lengthy answer @Yeah No! Yes they are multi focal and the highest level for the reading part. The distance part keeps going down every time she checks my eyes. In fairness, the last time I saw her was pre-Covid - so 4 years maybe? And not wearing glasses most of the day is probably strengthening my eyes. I am thinking of going to one of the mall places. The last time the eye doctor priced out glasses for me it was 600-700 dollars with her cheapest frames. In fairness to my current ones, they were purchased in 1990 for $90. And maybe lenses replaced 10 years later. So they owe me nothing. I can read a computer or a book or cook and wash dishes no problem without glasses or contacts, so I like the let's go cheaper for long distance solution. It's sad cuz the eye doctor has over 30 years of my eye history (there was a change in doctors over that time) but with everything getting more expensive, I would like to eat rather than pay her rates. (and sorry for the long paragraph but return has decided not to work!)
  19. ok so about the pickle juice, I would suggest a shot in waiting beside your bed, except the devil puppy (aka Mo) would probably drink it. Did you try the head rubbing? And bc curious minds want to know, did you make it to Brighton yesterday?
  20. Just to chime in on the eyeglass conversation . . . Since the pandemic started, I mostly function without glasses unless I drive or watch TV. It is true vision changes as we get older. The last time I was at the eye doctor she could not get my contact lenses correct - said get the 1.0 from dollar store. But doesn't that defeat the purpose of contact lenses? So I have been using a probably a 20 year old prescription on the glasses. I accidentally sat on them last year so keep having to tape them up. I have to take them off if I want to read prices at the grocery store. And they and the mask fight. As for the contacts, I am having problems getting them in. Lower back pain makes my hand shake. When I do get them in ok to drive, but eyes water. probably cuz of infrequent contact lens wearing for 3 years (and yes they are fresh lenses). Plus I can't read well with them. Anyway think I will get new glasses just for distance. If anyone has a suggestion on how to stop hand trembling from back pain - would love to hear it!
  21. Not sure if this comment belongs in this thread or the Pets one . . . Regardless. Elizabeth (the cat) has a radiator in her cave? She is a Maine c**** Tortie that probably has enough fur to keep both of you warm if the temp was sub zero. And please describe the cave😉
  22. I am not a doctor. But my understanding of the pickle juice to relieve cramps is the combination of salt and vinegar in the brine. The key is to make sure it hits the back of the mouth just before you swallow. Your doctor said salt on the tip of the tongue which could be the difference on why that didn't work for you.
  23. Funnily enough there was a segment on the radio this past week on how to stop cramps. The top suggestion was to take a shot of pickle juice (ie the liquid that is in a jar of pickles). Another suggestion was to rub your forehead, just above the top of your nose.
  24. Actually, it was Mac who was the surrogate
  25. It was a rerun in Canada on Friday. Since when did Y&R not have new episodes on Labour Day?
