Yesterday I was in the grocery store and since I only had 3 items went to the express lane, which I later noticed was also the accessibility lane. The customer ahead was in a wheel chair. She was reaching behind the chair to take items out of a bag strapped behind her chair and put them on the counter for checkout. Then I realized she had another bag full of items. I thought about asking if I could help, but before I did a man behind me in line just rushed forward and proceeded to dump her items from the bag to the check out. If I were her, I would have found this scarey. The reason for my hesitation in offering help to her is because I have been taught that just because you are in a wheel chair doesn't mean you are incapable. But now I am questioning my thoughts on that.

I have been away for two weeks without Internet, electricity or running water and access only by boat - my choice of vacation in the woods by a lake, except the docks are busted so there was no swimming and many rainy days. Many books were read, the most interesting was The Winds of War. Drove home the parallels between Hitler and Putin. So I'm late responding to a few posts. I have no idea about gnats, but I do agree with But I don't think the plants do anything themselves. You have to tear off a leaf and rub it on you. I have one that is over 30 years old - I bring it in every winter and it has pretty purple flowers in the summer (I think they are a member of the geranium family). @Netfoot I am so happy to read of your new job. One cannot support a person and pup on sales of toaster tongs (although also glad to read they sold well). Interesting that a jar of instant coffee is more expensive than your tongs. I know you will miss Brighton and this job is a huge adjustment for you and Mo. But would you consider letting him back in at night? He's going to feel punished with you going to work all day. I hope all goes well on your first day, and beyond

I'm sorry but I just don't understand this. Either you are a beneficiary of her will, or you aren't. And probate is the process of transferring the assets of the deceased into the estate to be transferred to the beneficiaries of the will. So how exactly is this your fault? To clarify, I am not a lawyer and maybe rules are different in Barbados. But I have lost enough close family members to understand how the process works. And I can't believe the law is that much different in Canada than in Barbados.

I'm sorry to hear of your current situation. Have you considered a position in retail i.e. a store clerk - the pay might not be great, but better than nothing. Plus you could interact with people which you are good at. Around here, stores are short of staff - you can just walk in and give your resume. I do agree with @Notabug's suggestion about doing freelancing on computer stuff - not to the level you worked in - but helping everyday people with their computer insecurities, setting up a website; basic stuff. And I am sure there is a demand for those services. But with no telephone/Internet that could be challenging. The Cat and I send you and Mo hugs, and hope things improve soon. (In the meantime think of how fit you will become walking to the mall everyday in search of free WIFI 😁 . And while you are there, you could ask if they have any staff openings in the stores.)

I am reminded of a note my mother penned decades ago for the outhouse at the cottage: Those that to this house doth come To do the deeds that must be done Be neat and clean, and one thing more Cover the hole and shut the door. My Mother passed away in 1992, but the note is still there 😀 The outhouse is not an open pit, but a pail installed under the hole where the seat is. This of course needs to be emptied every few days. -
I hate to say this, but have you considered "un-retiring" yourself, maybe on a part time basis?

Well, I don't think it is appropriate to attach a label to any profession or occupation. It depends on the individual. -

@isalicat is absolutely correct - there is a difference between accounting and bookkeeping. I qualified as a CPA, then went into the field of marketing research (strange as it sounds, there are similar skill sets for both). Off the top of my mind, I would say attention to detail and analytical skills - accounting is not black and white; nor is interpretation of survey results. And the analytical skills can only work if you talk with people and ask questions to gain an understanding. A few years ago, I took the job as interim bookkeeper at my church which has an incredibly complicated fund accounting system. I had to use the skills I acquired decades ago to be an effective bookkeeper. And yes, I did have to file tax returns, payroll remittances, etc. Learning the bookkeeping software was the easiest part. It was a fun job and involved a lot of interaction with members of the congregation who would just wander into the office for a chit chat as they did their volunteer work. The only reason I didn't make it permanent is because of long commute and low pay with no benefits. -
I don't watch CNN mornings but think that is John Berman. He has been around CNN for awhile and occasionally fills in for Anderson Cooper. I agree he is a good anchor. I think you are talking about Laura Coates (if you mean 10pm eastern). She was originally a CNN legal analyst with aspirations to become host of the 10pm Eastern slot. For a while this winter after Don Lemon was terminated, she and Alyson Camerota took an hour each. Ultimately CNN decided to go with Alyson for permanent host of 10pm-12 am eastern slot and keeping Laura as legal analyst. I like this move. While she can be engaging, Laura (like Don Lemon), cannot read a teleprompter to save her life! As legal analyst she doesn't have to. That being said, she was a fill in earlier this week As I was typing, this post popped up I think that is a Sunday morning show. Abby used to have more mms than I could stomach, getting better, but personally my opinion is she is attractive, but not particularly intelligent. I DO agree CNN is better with Chris Licht gone. It's like a breath of life into the station. I predict no more Trump town halls and more news - they cancelled all weekend non-news programming (Chris Wallace, The Whole Story, 2010's) to focus on Russia (in hindsight probably not needed). Anderson Cooper went to Newfoundland and Erin Burnett is now in Ukraine.

Excellent news. And I know you have no use for cats, but I think mine crossing her paws helped in the wishes 😀 OK, so I have no idea what Telegram is (assuming it is like a Facebook) but I have heard it mentioned many times recently in connection with the Wagner Group leader who made an advance on Moscow. It was his primary means of communication, but now he is silent. So maybe he has infiltrated it somehow, as mercenaries could do 😉

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Roofers are the worst to deal with. I had a problem with a roof vent that was pulled off slightly by a raccoon in 2020/2021. It then decided to have babies in the attic but the family moved out in May of 2021. So I sort of forgot about it. Until last summer, when I noticed wind had blown the vent away. My neighbour was due to have roofing done so I asked him if he could have his roofer repair my vent as well (I would pay), but would be cheaper than having someone make a stand alone call. Sometime in October, part of the ceiling fell due to moisture and I could look straight up to approximately 1 square foot of sky! I procrastinated, still hoping the neighbour was going to do something with his roof . . . November rolled in so I started looking for my own roofer. After 3 weeks of contacting companies (it is a small job and many wanted to do whole roofs) I finally contacted a company called Professional Roofers who said they would come by and do an estimate. They told me the minimum charge, but still wanted to do an estimate (I am thinking grr just fix the hole). They were supposed to come at 11am - at 11:30 called to say it would be 1-3pm and then guess what - never showed up. So, I hear you @SoMuchTV on wasting my time! AND never responded when I contacted them to follow up. Next I called a company in the area who I already knew would be expensive, but since I am in the neighbourhood I thought might be accommodating. They were, sort of. Couldn't send an estimator for two weeks, but was able to give me an estimate over the phone which I agreed to (and was consistent with the no show company). Only catch, he couldn't give me a date for repairs - said they would just show up. They did - a couple of days later at 4:30pm (probably having finished their main job and on their way back to the "office" which is about 8 blocks away). They started setting up their ladders at the rear of the house and I went out to say Hi - the problem is at the front - they said easier to access from here. I thought OK if you want to climb over a very steep roof . . . . And by now it is early December so starting to get dark. So about 45 minutes later they knocked on my door and said they were done. By now it is fully dark. I learned that instead of fixing the roof vent they put down plywood and shingles and totally enclosed the area. I asked - did you check for raccoons first? No was the answer. I didn't think there were any raccoons (hadn't heard any, plus thought my very inquisitive kitten would alert me). They also assured me that I didn't need that vent since there were two at the back. A few hours later I went upstairs and heard scratching, but thought it was on the roof. A few days later I noticed one of the roof vents was knocked slightly askew, but figured it was the roofers. No other sounds all winter. Fast forward to May (the ceiling has not been fixed and not only do I not know who to call, but it will be mega expensive since it is a high ceiling and will require scaffolding, probably) and I hear a kerfuffle upstairs one morning. The feline unit is upset - but there is other crying. I just can't figure out where it is coming from. When I go upstairs, all the kitten does is run and hide under the bed. The kitten eventually comes downstairs and goes to sleep. Then I hear crying again and go upstairs to find a baby raccoon in my upstairs hall. It scatters away and I come downstairs to Google how to get rid of baby raccoons in your house. Then it starts up again with crying and the kitten looks at me saying - this is not right, you need to fix this. So I got her carrier, put her in it (no resistance), grabbed a broom and opened the front door wide. I went upstairs and pushed/ prodded the raccoon down the stairs. When it got to the floor, it saw the door and made its way out. So clearly it was old enough to have been outside before, just not exiting the house that way. And that evening I saw a mother raccoon with 5 kits playing and feeding in my backyard so the mother found her baby and moved the rest of them out. Since then I have found a good exterminator who put in a one way trap for a week and then fixed the vent and put a raccoon proof cages on top of all. That should have been the solution 2 years ago, but hindsight is 20/20. And that cost me what the ceiling repair will probably cost. So pet peeve is 60% raccoons, 39% roofers, 1% kitten. -
Fingers crossed (and the cat is also crossing her paws) for you tomorrow!

OK I am sorry to be blunt, but if fun things like chair for phone and toaster tongs don't sell on Father's Day, who will buy? Switch to soundtrack from Oliver!

I think it is a ruse by @Netfoot to find out how many are following this thread 😁

With regard to the sets, I think I read somewhere that the lot where Y&R is filmed is undergoing a massive construction update which limits the space available for sets. Which begs the question - where exactly will Sally move in with Nick? We haven't seen his house in years. Also, shouldn't the show be out of scripts - I think it has been more than 6 weeks since the writer's strike started. I for one, would love a summer of Classic Y&R re-runs. -
The tongs look fantastic! They were selling for $10 CDN here a few years ago.

OK have to chime in about the toaster tongs. I don't see any glue for the magnet. The ones I have are a round magnet - and looks like drilled part way through the middle part and tapped in. Do you want a more close up pic? I think Toaster Tongs for Dad would be a huge sale for Fathers Day 😀

My Mother used to ask the butcher if the meat was well hung - which made me cringe when I was a teenager.

Oliver is the kitten/cat that was rescued by Connor in the park a few years ago. Hasn't been mentioned or seen since then, so might be in the garage with Christian. -

My prediction is that Borgnine will spend the summer on a play date with Oliver. -
They are beautiful boards. Maybe you should do a cross promotion with him and the tongs.
