Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
canter replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
The Subway commercial where people are so excited to have the opportunity to say "guacamole," as if that's some exotic word we're not accustomed to. Just ridiculous, especially airing it here in CA. -
Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads

The other annoying thing about that ad is the creep factor of an apparent stranger luring children back into the other car using wifi. After they try the non-wifi car and realize their movies won't play, he says something like, "You want to get back into the other car, don't you?" On another note, Flo from Progressive has gotten entirely too big for her britches. She was likable in her sorta nerdy, lowkey spots, but these ridiculous ads where she's playing every character ala Eddie Murphy, and singing power ballads, are just irritating. They tried to make A Thing out of what was already a good thing. Fail. -
Watching Lynne's family fall apart again, knowing what we know about how the girls turned out, was really sad. Alexa desperate for real family connection, blatantly acting out to get her parents to notice her -- so sad. And her idiot parents -- Frank offering a big vacation to make up for them losing their home (WTF?? Glad Alexa called BS on that to his face), and Lynne turning on the parental concern waaaaay too late at the wrap party (again with Alexa calling her on it: "Oh, now you're going to be a good mom and solve the problem?"). I also noticed that both Vicki and Gretchen called the wrap party "our final party," which seemed sort of fourth-wall-breaking to me, since they clearly meant it was the final party of the filming season.

I was surprised that there was no follow-up to that too (unless I missed it). She was OTT amped, and I figured it would come out that she had accidentally ingested something containing drugs.Speaking of, Ben's ability to function after 1 minute of Ambien-induced sleep was quite impressive.

You were right, TT -- only 45 posts last week! People may have been on spring break though -- maybe things could pick up a bit. I hope so, because even though I'm done with the show, I really enjoy this forum.

It's interesting to take just the weekly post counts in this forum as a weather vane for how steadily interest in this show is declining. I haven't watched in a couple months, but I still keep up here and was looking over the post counts. Here are this year's post counts for the weekly threads in case any of you are interested: Week of 1/5: 208 posts 1/12: 196 1/19: 291 1/26: 234 2/2: 268 2/9 (the week Rosie O left): 339 2/16: 114 2/23: 166 3/2: 129 3/9: 137 3/16: 110 3/23: 86 3/30: 83 4/6: <reruns, no thread> 4/13: 45

This reminds me, didn't she have some restriction about inviting the partners of non-married people to her wedding? You could only have a date if it was your spouse? I'd love for one of her friends to impose that same restriction on her formerly smug ass and make her show up stag to a wedding, practically with a scarlet S for single emblazoned on her chest. Arrogant indeed -- the second she was in the huzzband club she erected a wall of exclusion between herself and the poor, pathetic unmarrieds in her life.ETA: Aplogies, didn't realize this was the Whoopi topic.

I'm a supporter of home birth, but what Caroline was doing was not a home birth (as in, a birth at home attended by a midwife who is trained in birthing, handling minor emergencies, and knowing when to transfer mothers to the hospital), it was an unassisted birth, with no proper equipment or protocol. And as you say, it was for a footling breech 34-weeker, something a midwife would never agree to undertake in a home environment. I didn't think it made the point that only irresponsible people have home births, I thought it made the point that Caroline and Laird are so whacked out that they have no idea how to have a responsible home birth.

I don't know what you mean by the first question, but regarding the rest, that's what I meant about possibly having missed some stuff. I don't have a good sense of how long they've been a couple, but from what I had gathered, it's not long. Not long enough to have a shared bank account, anyway. Can you even write a single check to two people with separate bank accounts? (Sorry if that's a dumb question, I really don't know.) Yes, Desi was a jerk to spend the money, but I would think they would have it set up so advances are paid out to each of them equally, rather than having checks written to Desi and trusting him to split it with her. It's naive to do otherwise. I would say maybe this will be a learning experience for Marnie, but she accepted his marriage proposal, so it looks like ... nope, not so much.
-
True. I guess I'm thinking of it with an adult brain with reasoning capabilities and logistical stuff like contracts as a given, where she'd be protected from him even being able to blow her half of the advance. I should know by now not to expect such thinking from the girls on this show.
-
I didn't really get why Marnie was SO upset with Desi about buying the guitar pedals. They aren't yet at the relationship stage where they have shared finances, right? So if they got a $2000 advance, they should each get $1000, and if he chooses to spend his whole portion plus another $1000 of his own money on guitar pedals, who cares? I just didn't get why she immediately assumed he spent *their* advance, including her share, on that stuff. I admit I haven't paid super close attention to the last few episodes though, so maybe I missed something.

I caught a rerun this morning, the airplane episode. I had never seen the show before. I liked her at first -- she reminded me of hanging out in the kitchen with an older family member. But then she made chicken salad sandwiches, fruit salad, and sugar cookies. Really?? Who can't make all of those things right now with no recipe involved?? Those recipes were simpler and less useful than the ones on Pioneer Woman.

I don't even really care that the show is lame these days -- my viewership has always been spotty at best, and I haven't watched at all since RO left. What bums me out is how sloooow these weekly threads are getting. Whether I watched the show or not, this place has always been a must-read for me, and the weekly threads used to easily clear 200, and sometimes even 300, posts. But now we're barely eeking out 100 posts per week. I guess it just goes to show that whether this show was good or horrific, it had some entertainment value, but now it's just ... boring. There's just nothing to even say about it. Seems like the death knell for a TV show, to me.

Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads

Wow, xaxat, that is horrific!! It made me remember this other gem from the 70s, with Anjelica Huston selling perfume. It's bizarre and definitely a WTF moment. -

The State Farm "never" commercial: Guy says he's never getting married <gets married> Says he's never having kids <has a kid> Says he's never moving to the suburbs <moves to suburbs> Says he's never getting a minivan <gets a minivan> Says he's never having another kid <has another kid> Says he's never letting go of his family <commercial ends> So ... it follows that he's totally going to let go of his family, right? -
Sounds like you caught the show on some decent days. I've only heard it a couple times as well, and I must have caught it on bad days. She was insufferable, thinking she was being so edgy by using the word "fuck" whenever possible, and basically just reading Yahoo newsfeed items and then commenting on them. Both times, I rolled my eyes and turned to another station after about 5 minutes. Maybe one of these days I'll catch her discussing a topic like the ones you mention above
-
I'm gone too. My season pass is deleted from the DVR. I truly enjoyed watching some years, and enjoyed hate-watching during snarkable years, but now it's just freaking boring. I'm out. I'll still check in here occasionally though -- you all are terrific!

I enjoyed the show today. I like when it's just the four of them. I heard Rosie P express her happiness to be back, more than once. Regarding her more "down" demeanor, she's probably exhausted. I was impressed with Nicolle today. She blatantly called out Republicans for having a backwards view on vaccinations, AND she quoted Hillary Clinton! I also appreciated her comments regarding immigration. I admire her ability to acknowledge the flaws in her party.

I enjoyed seeing that Miranda Sings person out of character -- I find the character incredibly off-putting (which I suppose is the point), but the actual woman was pleasant enough.

Barbara's visit on Friday was fine, but certainly not something I need regularly. I'm surprised they're booking her so often. I'm sorry Cha Cha died, but I gotta say, I thought it was rather tasteless of her to bring up her dog's death immediately after Cristela mentioned her mother's passing.

Billy Elliot's angry dance, and his thrilling stag leap at the end. Gets me every time.

Making Ina's Recipes at Home: How Easy is That?
canter replied to Bastet's topic in Barefoot Contessa
Two Ina recipes that I make again and again are the meatballs from her Italian wedding soup (I've only made the soup once, but I make those meatballs often) and her fruitcake cookies. I adjust the quantities of fruit, adding lots of figs for sweetness and cutting down the amount of apricots. I also add sunflower seeds to give it more of a trail mix effect. They're so good, and they keep nicely. -
I had read a bunch of King stuff years ago, as a teen, but I got back into it this year and have really been enjoying it. Now I'm able to appreciate the writing as well as the story. Speaking of, didn't be write a book about writing? I read that years ago and really liked it. The first King book I read this year was The Stand (unabridged), and while I was completely absorbed and couldn't do anything but read until I was finished, I really hated that he updated the setting to the 90s during the reworking of it. He changed some references, but not others. IV fluids and vending machine sodas were still in glass bottles, and a 14-year-old girl got a "portable phonograph" for her birthday. In the 90s, really? It was distracting. I wish he would have just left it set in the 70s, especially since the 90s is now long past too, so it's not like the "updated" references were current. Anyway, I still loved the book. Since then, I've read 11/22/63 and Doctor Sleep, both of which I absolutely loved. Right now I'm reading Under the Dome, and while I'm not as enthralled as I was with the others, I'm enjoying it. I never watched the reportedly terrible TV show, so maybe that saves me from having a worse impression.

All Episodes Talk: Admit it. You Can't Stand The View.
canter replied to stormygone's topic in The View
After Whoopi's repeated insistence that there are only Frozen and/or other "girl" ornaments available at Disney parks, I had to laugh today when I walked into a store at Disneyland and the first display I came to was chock full of Captain Hook, Mickey Mouse, and Cars ornaments. I actually had to hunt around to find Frozen stuff (although there was a dedicated Frozen store -- maybe Whoopi stumbled into that by mistake and then wondered why everything was Frozen??) I wonder if Disney was pissed that she disparaged them multiple times on the show, and with completely false information at that! -
I agree that her timing was quite odd. She stepped out the funeral service of a dear friend to call her doctor? She couldn't have done it before or after? Unless it was 4:45 and she was worried the office would close before she could get the results, I thought it was terribly rude. Regarding not doing a home pregnancy test, maybe she did but was waiting for the blood test results/HCG levels before she really believed it. I couldn't quite believe that my pregnancy was real until I had those HCG numbers back from the doctor. I think she must have done a home test, or she wouldn't have scheduled the blood draw with her doc.
