  1. I've been keeping my cable for the moment, though I know I could probably get by with over-the-air plus streaming most of the time if I really wanted to. I may yet go back to internet only though I'm waiting since Time Warner has turned into Spectrum in New York and I know that the new deals will mean fewer channels in the long run. I won't be able to get a basic channel plan anymore for instance. I do have Tivo and if you get a model that lets you connect an antenna (I think some models of Tivo Roamio currently do) it's a good way to have shows recorded to watch even over the air. One thing I do like is the Hulu no-commercials plan for $12 a month. I sometimes binge-watch a show especially if it's one I haven't seen before (I used to work at night for a long time so there were some shows I never really watched). My tolerance for commercials has really gotten low so it's fun to watch that way.
  2. So the show is pre-empted on the 4th? I see CBS advertising a different lineup of shows this Sunday.

Boris Becker says Novak Djokovic's form dipped due to absence of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal Boris "man of a thousand excuses" Becker strikes again!
  4. Lupita Tovar, the leading lady of the Spanish version of the 1931 Dracula, has passed away. She was 106 years old! http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/lupita-tovar-dead-dracula-actress-850624
  5. I watched both Mike and Merv, I watched a ton of talk shows in the old days. I do remember one amusing moment when Orson Welles was on Merv's show and he casually commented "I never drink wine" - and suddenly gasped because he was making a series of commercials at the time intoning "We will sell no wine before its time".
  6. I really liked the way they handled the last scene. I had a feeling Sherlock would show up, after the scene where Joan explained her thoughts on the reason for sharing the commendation. At the end, though, when everyone started clapping, I thought "Don't let him clap" and he didn't. The characters are so well observed and played. I definitely thought the astronomer's vest seemed to be a takeoff on one that Neil deGrasse Tyson has worn on the air, though Dr. Tyson's is classier I think. It would have been amusing to have him play himself, or someone like him, but this way I guess Sherlock's frenemy can reappear as an irregular, if that's what he is.
  7. I was thinking about that one myself, the memory that stands out for me is when they brought Chuck Berry on and he and John played. John was so thrilled.
  8. Thanks for the link ratgirlagogo. I remember Zacherley doing a Halloween evening special performance for New York oldies station WCBS-FM, probably in the 80s.
  9. To date myself...my family watched Star Trek when it was first run, but it got *very* low ratings at the time. So maybe it being cancelled would have broken the internet if a small group of fans could make a lot of noise, maybe not? The huge cult following of Trek happened later when it was rerun, though I have to say that I always enjoyed the show and still do.
  10. I tuned in about 10:50 Eastern and it had just started (I missed the very opening). So they did show it, if you have on demand that might be the best way to see it. I can't wait for football to end! Loved Joan's response to Sherlock: "Then you'll live to be 100!"
  11. I turned the TV on at 10 and saw opening credits for Madam Secretary - I hope Elementary is actually shown tonight.
  12. I just love seeing Stephen interviewing Nick Offerman, I hope he becomes a recurring guest.
  13. Thanks Blergh, I didn't know about that. Buster made a lot of appearances on early television after being rediscovered so I did wonder if he'd ever appeared on I Love Lucy, certainly a lot of other celebrities did. I know he made an appearance on The Twilight Zone, though I've yet to see it.
  14. I thought I might be going back too far with this one but I can see some of these are even farther back in time so -- My two favorite Hollywood actors are Buster Keaton and Humphrey Bogart. There's a very interesting six-degrees connection between them - Sybil Seely, Buster's charming leading lady in such early short silent classics as One Week and The Boat, married none other than Jules Furthman, the co-screenwriter (with William Faulkner and Leigh Brackett) of The Big Sleep, my favorite Bogart/Bacall noir. Furthman was also the screenwriter for Shanghai Express.
  15. I'm actually sorry that TWC let Keith Carson go - he posted that he missed Maine but I wish they'd tried to keep him. I thought his irreverence was welcome on the station, and he did post online once an opinion that Weather Channel was naming too many winter storms, which I doubt too many more folks at the station would have done. (No I don't like his 5 o'clock shadow either, but I don't like it on any man.) Anyway I do follow him online to keep up, maybe Weather Channel will do a remote with him in the winter. I was watching a lot of the Hurricane Matthew coverage last week and I have to say that Dave Malkoff was doing an excellent job covering the storm in the Bahamas, speaking to the prime minister and police chief and doing a very sad piece with survivors, including a man who rode out the storm in his attic and a woman with a niece and nephew whose home had been destroyed. I didn't see any coverage of Haiti, I can only imagine how horrible things are for them.
  16. Yes, I agree, Channel 11 in New York was rerunning the early seasons on Sunday nights last year.
  17. I can understand Joan's outfits actually because it's been the hottest summer in New York that I can ever remember, and it didn't cool down until very recently. I was afraid that the former patient friend was going to turn out to be the other bomber, glad it wasn't him. Interesting that the title of this episode was the same as a title of an episode of Law and Order Criminal Intent, and the initial setup of a crime re-occurring after a period of time was also the setup of LOCI's "Shibboleth".
  18. I wrote about this somewhere else on the board, but I revisited UNCLE also after not seeing it since I was probably a young teenager, and it seemed so silly and implausible that I almost wondered if it was actually intended as a satire. Probably more "tongue in cheek" perhaps but I don't think from what I saw that it holds up very well (they were fortunate though to have Barbara Feldon as the guest star in the second episode I saw to shore up the comedy aspect). I do like David McCallum on NCIS however. Just wanted to add that I have had problems in the past with the over-the-air transmission from METV in the New York Area (though I live right near the transmitter, it's "low-VHF" which apparently is problematic) anyway it would break up a lot, which really frustrated me when trying to record Perry Mason. However it has suddenly improved considerably. I don't know if they changed anything but I hope they keep it up if so.
  19. I've only seen one preview ad for the show that I can remember, while watching Stephen Colbert. I guess CBS isn't into advertising the show much, but at least they keep renewing it...
  20. I've watched a lot of them but it looks liked they skipped Over the River and Through the Woods? I wonder why, it's such a classic.
  21. Just a couple of thoughts after some binge watching on Decades: I love the show but it's correct that it shouldn't be taken too seriously. I mean, of course there are a lot of Elliot Carlins out there (though none as brilliantly funny as Jack Riley, RIP I am sure) but suffice to say that in real life a therapist's patients wouldn't visit the doctor at home, drop by on Thanksgiving, etc. and certainly Bob wouldn't be telling Emily all about them on a regular basis. There didn't seem to be much confidentiality in Dr. Hartley's world, but of course it's a sitcom. On another note, I just watched the very funny ep where Bob finds out that Emily has a higher IQ than he does, and I noticed a familiar actor playing a bit role in the High IQ Party scene. I'd seen the actor on The Odd Couple. It turns out his name was Bill Quinn and he was Bob's father in law!

Yes, I noticed that when Stefan Edberg (one of my all time faves along with Federer) was coaching Roger very recently.

I could probably stand Djoker (except when he tries to pull a fast one as he did yesterday) but I'm glad Stan beat him and doubly glad they had to stop showing Boris "mind games" Becker celebrating. There's a guy I'd like to see off my TV for good. It was only about a year ago that Becker tried to stir up something by claiming Nole and Roger "didn't like each other." Some people never change. I think BB's major contribution as "coach" is coming up with ways to try to fake out the opposition.
  24. Just remembered a great Carver quote from In the Wee Small Hours, after Goren and Logan find out they've arrested a prominent judge's son in the case: "Brace yourselves ladies and gentlemen, we're flying into the eye of the hurricane" By the way that episode came out the year of Katrina.
  25. He also appeared on Night Court a few times. Such a brilliant actor, I'm so sad. DECADES is currently running Bob Newhart as a weekend "Binge" in honor of Bob's 87th birthday this week! Happy Birthday Bob! By the way, Bob is on Facebook and he wrote a sweet note there saying how touched he was by all the birthday wishes this week.
