TDS 3.0: Season One Talk
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
I thought the Olympics opener with Roy and Ronnie was awesome! It's about the only part of the show I saw because I genuinely cannot stomach any more Trump shit and FF through the segments that feature a graphic of him. Which is most of the show, unfortunately. -
Honestly! Derek: Are you upset about something? Heather: I don't like how much you're smoking. Derek: But you said it was okay? It is more than usual because I'm on vacation and like to let loose a bit. Heather: I understand, but I still don't like it. I'm sorry for giving you mixed signals. I shouldn't have said I didn't mind when you initially asked me. Derek: I'm sorry that I've upset you. It's not important to me and I don't want it to come between us. I won't smoke any more while we're here, okay? Instead, we get a circular "I know you are but what am I?" series of taunts. Also, if it's important to Heather's rigid mental health than Derek unpack his clothes and he doesn't give a crap, she should have done it for him. I just hope Derek doesn't remark that he likes palm trees because then Heather will be all, "He's a coconut thief!"

Jeeze, Nick. If the behavior we've seen is him feeling comfortable, I'd hate to know what he finds awkward. I don't blame Sonia for being upset after she told him she "really really" liked him and he refused to reciprocate. That's pretty cold and another instance of the attitude he displayed on their wedding day when he was unable to tell her she looked pretty. God forbid he say something nice to his wife's face. Several of the participants have mentioned that they "hope" this or that happens or something goes well in the future. To me that indicates they haven't gone into this believing the marriages will be binding. Which of course they aren't, but the mindset of "I can always divorce" is quite detrimental to eventual success. In arranged marriages, love and affection sometimes don't develop for many months. Heather and her "this is not what I expected" comment also indicate to me how unrealistic she was beforehand. Nope, marriage is not a fairy tale, Heather, and some people are messy.

I thought it was generic dorky game show host dyed hair. Shrug. I liked the idea of the international Olympics panelists -- too bad they weren't funnier. I guess I don't share Hardwick's adoration of Yakov. (Or should I say YakovSmirnoff, as Chris continually called him.)

The Jim Gaffigan Show - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Jim Gaffigan Show
Richter as Gaffigan's brother was fun casting but then things went south again afterwards with the museum episode. Bumbling dad can't manage his children. Har har? -
I mean ... why would Joyce make such an accusation? She knew it wasn't true. Was that maybe the cover story everyone agreed on? It presumably sounds better and is more believable than "monsters."

I watched season 2 this week and have to say it was odd. I loved seeing Elise and Karl work together again and liked the addition of BB and the new French female detective, but the plot was kind of muddy and lacked tension. I was also pretty tired of Karl's home life by the end and didn't really buy his all-consuming grief about Adam. I mean, sleeping in the kid's bed and reading his childhood books? A little much. Elisa falling under the spell of a criminal -- who she knew was a murderer -- was also off-putting. I realize the weirdness of it was the point, but I guess it just made me feel sad for Elise that when she was finally able to feel genuine love again after her sister's death, it came to this. I also felt bad for Gael, poor man. The specter of TT in prison still causing trouble made me shake my head.

In addition to being a snoop, the character was snotty and condescending, so it was hard for me to work up any sympathy. I enjoyed the episode a lot, with the team all working together. I never felt any real jeopardy for Angie, not just because she's one of the leads but because the bomb woman didn't come off as menacing in any way.

I read a review that characterized her range as: Episode one: My son is missing! Episode four: My son is missing! I didn't care for Ryder's hammy performance but agree that the script didn't give her much scope until halfway through.

Article from The Telegraph that discusses possible plot developments for season two.

At this moment in time, Five, because I've really enjoyed seeing her come into her own this season. But taken as a whole, it's still Android, then One.

Not exactly ringing endorsements, people! ;) It's not like I don't have 90 minutes to spare, but it's the Jaden thing, and the murky plot thing, and Netflix shoving it at me every time I log in. I'm also unfairly comparing it to Vinyl in my head, and Vinyl was awful.

Congratulations to Nadiya ... on having such a gorge husband! Oh, and on her baking as well. I cried through every family segment. I've always liked Ian and seeing his wife and kids sweetly filled in the picture of him, his house, and village. Tamal's sister relaying how she taught him to bake and tearing up from pride was also touching. The waterworks went into overdrive when Nadiya's father/FIL started jumping up and down with happiness. As for the food, it looked so good that I actually went to the store and bought some lemon drizzle pound cake! A poor substitute no doubt but I ate it while rewatching the episode. Thanks also to Mark Blankenship for his funny and heartfelt recaps.

I know nothing about the show, the writer, Gibson, or details of the altercation, so this is coming from zero, but it's good to see that actions have repercussions. Too often in the entertainment world temper tantrums and childish behavior are tolerated because these are creative people who must be coddled and catered to. They're delicate flowers communing with their internal muses, y'all!

Shipper Wars: Favorite And Least Favorite TV Couples
zxy556575 replied to mstaken's topic in Everything Else TV
On Everwood, I was so troubled by the pairing of Madison and Ephram that to this day I'm unable to watch anything Sarah Lancaster is in. Child molester! She was his babysitter! (Okay not really but still kind of.) -
Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
zxy556575 replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
That actually makes sense! The exasperating part is that when my card number was skimmed and used fraudulently, the bank didn't say boo to three $100 charges within 10 minutes, at a gas station across the country from me. At least these days we don't have to wait for monthly credit card statements to review charges. -

This is a minor annoyance because I do appreciate the security, but the matching algorithms or whatever credit card companies use to flag "suspicious" activity are so random. The last couple of weeks, almost every time I buy something I get an alert from the bank and have to call them and wind my way through the automated menus: Did you make such-and-such purchase? Press 1 for yes. Why is a dental bill from someone in my zip code suspicious? Or me ordering a new laptop? Or buying groceries at Publix which I do pretty much every week? It all seems so random to me. A couple of decades ago I was on vacation and the bank actually cut off my card because I wasn't home to answer the phone and they weren't able to get a hold of me to verify charges. -
Heather isn't attracted to Derek and has already basically shut down to wait out the six weeks. She's shrewd enough to know not to have a public meltdown or bash him in her talking heads, but it's not difficult to read her frosty, disintrested politeness.

I'm interested to see the living arrangements when everyone gets back to Miami. It's a large metropolitan area and geographic logistics will probably come up again. Tom's beach-adjacent mobile home park is probably well outside the city limits. The more Tom fixates on the potential negatives of his housebus and delays telling Lili, the worse he'll make it seem. He should have mentioned it right away as one of the interesting factoids about him during their initial conversations: "Where do you live?" "I'm renovating a cool 90s tour bus out by the beach in CityName." There, done.

Unless she was standing in a hole in the photo and considering how short Chris is, his mom must not even break 5'.

MAFS Social Media, Spoilers & Speculation

How obnoxiously drunk would someone have to be to get arrested for flashing during Mardi Gras? In a city that's notoriously lax and freewheeling and during the most outrageously intoxicated party of the year, at which hundreds of women briefly flip up their tops? -
It doesn't look like the show is going that way, but please gawd don't have Karl and Elise hook up at the end. They have no chemistry except as co-workers and now friends, the age difference is offputting, and Karl himself is an angular, average looking middle aged guy. I've already had to hand wave the presumed sexual magnetism that made the widow what's-her-name throw herself at him, plus his good looking wife, plus his assumed past sexual indiscretions. He ain't all that!

So bad it made me stop watching a show I otherwise liked: Vic and Walt on Longmire. -
I thought begging Aidan to take her back was worse, to be honest. Taking her apology to Natasha at face value, the motive -- however misguided -- wasn't awful. Because of her own neuroses, Carrie of course wasn't able to leave it at that and once again made it all about herself, but I didn't loathe the idea of a personal apology. However I couldn't find any shred of good intentions in Carrie BEGGING Aidan to take her back when she (1) knew fully well how hurt and damaged he was by her betrayal, and (2) also knew he wasn't the man she ultimately wanted to spend her life with. Both actions were extremely selfish and hurt others, but Aidan had skin in the game with Carrie while Natasha did not. I also don't know if I as a viewer was supposed to feel sympathy for Carrie while watching her completely abase herself in both situations? Or maybe it was supposed to be funny? I doubt the desired emotion was revulsion.
