MAFS Social Media, Spoilers & Speculation
zxy556575 replied to Bella's topic in Married At First Sight
Warm? That's about the last characteristic I'd apply to Nick! I'd also disagree with sweet or welcoming -- guy has barely cracked a smile through six episodes. More like coolly composed and analytical. -

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

I'm guilty of being shocked sometimes but tell myself it's because the majority of celebs work so hard and pay so much to keep their thinness and "youth" that it can be a little surprising when someone actually allows him- or herself to gain weight or show signs of aging. Bad plastic surgery is another issue, but that's also jarring to me if I haven't seen someone for a while. Mein gott what have they done?! (Which frankly is what anyone who hasn't seen me in 30 years would think, so not judging!) -

She's Got It: Favorite Female Characters
zxy556575 replied to amensisterfriend's topic in Everything Else TV
I love coolly intelligent female characters! No whimpering in corners and relying on someone else to save them. Kiera Cameron in Continuum. Clever, shrewd, determined, courageous and super kickass. I'm currently entranced by Android on Dark Matter. Her internal struggles, both electronic and emotional, are extremely well played by Zoie Palmer. The characters of Two and Five on that show are also appealing to me -- fierce and unafraid to make hard decisions. Eleven in Stranger Things is empathetic and smart beyond her years, despite a horrific life. But ultimately yes, who I'd want to be is Miss Phryne Fisher, the shining epitome of a woman who knows and follows her own damned mind. -

Sorry, FF! That's a pita. The most traumatic kitchen mess I ever made was when I first got a microwave. I covered some eggs in water and put the bowl in the microwave to hard boil. The resulting egg-splosion burst open the microwave door and shotgunned little bits of egg all over the kitchen floor, cupboards, stove, walls, etc. -
Relationships in The Quad: What the Hells?
zxy556575 replied to iRarelyWatchTV36's topic in Killjoys
Nor to me, but portraying them as ride or die BFF soulmates also doesn't work because it effectively prevents them from having fulfilling and mature romantic relationships outside of each other. I didn't think Dutch was sexually jealous of Pawter, but she still wasn't okay with her pulling Johnny's focus. The only way Johnny could consider a future with Pawter was by lying to Dutch. Healthy! Also, the resulting relationship triangle plot of deceit and miscommunication was way too soapy for my taste. -
I hope we don't have to wait until next season to find out who's in the Marauder. Maybe it will be the finale cliffhanger as Corso suddenly appears again? I'm also still wondering what happened to Devon. The show has such a cavalier way of whipping characters in and out that I was kind of afraid Android really might be killed. Not deactivated! Killed.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Ah Vans, of course! This is my favorite thread, btw, as was alt.peeves on Usenet. I get a kick out of hanging with my irascible pals. :) Bad customer service tales could go on for months, but even Amazon fell down on the job this week and they're usually quite good. I had a bug with my Kindle Fire and, wanting to avoid talking on the phone, I sent an email. They replied that it would be easier to talk it through on the phone, but I still resisted and started a chat session instead. I'd explain something or answer a question and the guy would take forever to reply -- like, I played 2-3 hands of solitaire while waiting for him to peck out a response. Most of his canned answers didn't even apply to what I was asking, so he finally gave up and passed me on to the "Kindle specialist." Like, who had I been talking to? That guy couldn't help either, but at least he seemed to know what was what. -

Birkenstocks? Crocks? Nike? I'm madly trying to figure what brand has unisex styles and its own stores! :) Inconsistently applied rules are aggravating as hell. When I fly, I carry on a small canvas overnight bag that can actually be squished to fit under the seat in front of me if needed. I get so miffed watching the parade of passengers with huge so-called carry-on bags that take up half of one overhead bin. Some airlines are cracking down but as with the backpacks, it's easier for the gate attendants to just let it go when those people come wheeling up to board. Peeve-of-the-day calendar: I bought a new laptop direct from the manufacturer with Windows 7 installed (at my request). I've been setting up all my preferences and shit on it today and the thing is now in it's 4th hour of "checking for updates." Not even installing! The software is probably quite a bit behind, but if something's broken and the updates don't work, I'm going to heave a HUGE world-weary sigh. -
Eve's Marathon Diary: Sex And The City Winds It Up

Even more so than with Aiden, I never understood what Aleks saw in Hot Mess Express Carrie. What was the attraction? She was completely unsuited to him. Carrie and Berger made the most sense to me. He turned out to be neurotic and unstable, but I could totally see them as a couple otherwise. -
Cheers to you too, Al! I've been working my way through many of your suggestions this summer and am currently in the midst of Hatha ... I mean Lewis. I'd posit that Endeavour is the best of the Dexter translations, although it's possible I treasure it so highly because it was my first. ;)

Brain Bleed: The Shows We Hate & The Reasons We Hate Them
zxy556575 replied to SPLAIN's topic in Everything Else TV
I've been catching up on a lot of shows this year (yay, retirement!) and don't think I've made it to the end of any series that lasted more than 4 seasons, even though I had been really enjoying the show overall. There's just a point where it's all too repetitive and the plots become more and more farfetched (which bingeing exacerbates). I then just read summaries for the rest of the episodes and watch the finale: The Closer: God, shut up, Brenda. Justified: I love ya, Raylan and Boyd but ugh with the shootings and fighting and in and out of prison like it's a drive-through burger joint. Covert Affairs: Waning interest in (1) unrealistic spying and (2) romantic misadventures. Fringe: The alternative universe can bite me. Deep Space Nine: Yeah, yeah space adventures. Just tell me how it ends already. Inspector Morse: Murders, inappropriate women. Got it. Longmire: Stupid romances again. Etcetera! -

That would bother me, too. Standard online I-know-nothing legal disclaimers apply, but I would call CPS if they were my neighbors. Anonymously, because of not wanting to start any kind of escalating payback feud. I'm still scarred from that "Trouble on the Hill" Dateline episode! -
That was funny. They've been sexing it up on vacation and now it's awkward for her to cook with him? Can you imagine the non-camera-ready applicants who were immediately discarded? All participants from all seasons (even OMG doughy David!) have been within a healthy weight range and, objectively, average or above-average in looks. The swimsuit models of either sex aren't going to need this show and I think casting has done a good job in the looks department, all things considered. The participants who've been palpably disappointed with their spouse's appearance went into it with unrealistic expectations, and that's on them.

That's because you're a lovely and considerate person. One of the angriest and longest online debates on my community discussion board is about people who take their dogs to patio restaurants. The #1 angriest thread? Dog walkers who let their pets pee on other people's lawns. That one has been going on periodically for the six years I've been here! My PEEve would therefore be people who join a new board and post a question without searching past topics. ;) -

Oh, I always put the kibosh on that! The terrace or patio or goddamned boiling hot sidewalk is not "nice." Every person in the group jumps for the chairs shaded by the umbrella, leaving 1-2 people to sweat it out and possibly even get a sunburn. My enjoyment of al fresco dining ends at any temperature above 75 degrees. I'd also be "uh, nope" about the construction noise. On a different note, I need to stop reading the thread on celebrities we hate, because it's started to depress me. -
The Almighty Johnsons - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to David T. Cole's topic in The Almighty Johnsons
The sexual relationships in the show might have been the worst part for me and I thoroughly agree about having a problem with Mike. I binged the show last year and unlike a lot of series with multiple seasons, it kept my interest throughout, but Mike became more and more of an egomaniac as time rolled on. -
Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality
zxy556575 replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
I want to believe people aren't this dumb in real life, but the ones on TV sure do leave their lights on, drapes open, and doors unlocked while conducting illicit activities. Particularly extramarital affairs. Let's kiss and undress right in front of a window! -
Glasses of judgment! So true. I'm especially tickled at that coming from someone with your user name. I'm unfashionable but are huge tortoise shell frames a thing now? I kept looking at them and thinking, "Really? (with Seth and Amy).

It was notable that the guy from Nunez's team corrected Peck's artist who had placed his template on the arm facing the wrong way. I know he had ulterior motives but it was nice to see a bit of human-ish interaction nonetheless.
-
Thinking about the stallion back pieces again, I would have liked to hear the reasoning behind the team's choice of composition, and especially whether Nunez had any input. Most triptychs present a unified image, which in this case would have been something like horse facing right, horse facing left, and middle horse fairly straight on. Dave putting so much emphasis on the fucking blue line running through all three winning pieces was silly. The blue may have tied the three tattoos together (in a very minor way), but I would argue that it didn't figure in to the overall composition, which was the brief. I also didn't think the tattoo with the square border was as bad as the judges were making it out to be. The snakes looked like snakes at least. Threatener Tito or whatever his name is had the worst one of the night imo.

Comedy is so damned personal, but I really liked Flaked on Netflix. It may slice a little too closely to Louis for you, in that middle-aged-white-guy-burnout way, but I found it to be much more sweet natured. The humor is primarily in the send-up of Venice and So Cal beach hipster culture, if that's a milieu you can identify with and/or find amusing.
