Bingeing Vs Watching Weekly
zxy556575 replied to Ronin Jackson's topic in The TV Bazaar: Assorted TV-Adjacent Talk
I've been binging a lot of older series lately but usually can only make it through 30 episodes or so. Even if I care about and like the show overall, at some point it becomes too much and I'll start to fast-forward, then ultimately give up and just read episode summaries to find out what happened. Hours and hours of concentrated episodes often serve to highlight a show's flaws or a specific character's annoyingness. Yesterday it was the reimagined Battlestar Galactica; I had been drawn in and watching the episodes pretty quickly but got to the end of season 2 and simply couldn't take it any more. "It" being Baltar. Even though I really liked Justified and made it through five seasons -- a lot more than most -- I couldn't hack watching the final one. Love you, Raylan, but spare me yet another damned fight scene between you and Boyd. I also definitely agree that being unable to discuss the show impacts my enjoyment. If the series has a forum here I'll usually go back and read the comments, but not being able to participate is a bit of a bummer. Sometimes a person has questions! -

The sketch with Kermit and Stephen made me snort-laugh several times, although I wondered how much was improvised. Stephen was having to stifle his giggles. -
S01.E03: Consequences Of Advanced Spellcasting

I want to give Alice a hearty kick in the shins. She's hell-bent (perhaps literally) on doing her thing no matter who gets hurt, killed, or expelled. Wouldn't the faculty include a couple of psychics who would have figured her out by now, or at least be keeping a close eye on her and Quentin after their first round of disobedience/transgressions? Annoying all around. Quentin's willingness to unthinkingly accept Eliot's gossipy disdain of the hedge witches reflects poorly on him. But then, he is a follower and a doofus. -
That wasn't Maze in bed with Luci when he woke up, was it? All we saw was the back of a dark-haired woman. I suppose Maze's resentment may have reached the tipping point after five years of bartending, but it seems like jealousy is also in play. Which, yawn. Luci for sure wasn't having any of her lip, except that she was not at all fazed by his demon face. Another existential dilemma for Luci: how to live the life of a louche rake but still expect other beings to quail before his might. I enjoyed the throwaway line when Luci went to Chloe's house and his first remark was wondering how she could afford it. Expensive residences beyond the means of TV characters, indeed. I guess we should be prepared for Chloe's mother to turn up at some point and, inevitably, be attracted to Luci.

The female panelists do lose proportionately more than the men, with the exception of a few women who are on a lot. I think it's more a matter of the women being unfamiliar with, or worse at using, the buzzer. They have their jokes prepared, just like the guys.

I seriously hope the couchies will be watching Grease Live this week. I'd watch a show with just Blake, Scott and Emerson singing along the whole 3 hours! Maybe Princella could throw in some choreography.

I love that idea! Kind of the X-Files for miracles except Celine would be the believer and Father Jude the skeptic. ;) -

I'm probably like your co-worker. I need to turn the car radio off if I'm trying to find an address, I could never study in noisy areas or with the TV on, wouldn't be able to talk on the phone and shop, etc. I found out in graduate school when we used ourselves as test subjects that I have an auditory processing disorder, which I'm sure contributes but who knows whether it's the cause or a symptom. I need to deal with it at work since I'm a damned department director, but my stomach does start to knot when I'm forced to juggle. -
I saw some ads for it and it was very Not For Me, but Julie and Brandy were cracking up. Leave it to them to figure out the mom was Louie Anderson in a dress. ... and let's spare a moment for Rashawn's pain: how in hell is he supposed to date when he spends all his damned time with his fool parents?!! Ayn's haircut was cute but I feel like sending Teddi a link to the DirecTV instruction manual. Thanks to Destiney, I now know what Smart & Final is. Turns out those are the names of the founders -- I was thinking it was a discount store with no returns or something. I'll have to take her word that it was one of their salad bowls on Game Night. Shall we think of more lesbian-approved movies for Julie to guess the actresses? Personal Best! Chasing Amy!

I'm a big proponent of the 3 am pop-in at Wal-Mart or other 24-hour stores. Sometimes I startle the clerks. My biggest shopping peeve is grocery stores who package/bundle their produce instead of leaving it loose. Sometimes I just want one damned zucchini and one squash, not two pounds of the stuff! Same with the price gouging for cut fruit -- I may not need an entire pineapple, but buying a small container of fresh slices will cost me three times as much per ounce. Bundling promotes food waste, if nothing else. -
Ooh! The website extras include screenshots of the best doggie moments and gives the third chihuahua's name as Mighty Mouse. I heard it as "Maya," too. I think they watch at Brandy's house but we still don't know if they're all her dogs or if Julie brings hers over, or it's a combination. The potato grader should be our TPC secret clubhouse joke when watching singing competitions: He's a fry! Mashed!

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

Damned cleaning supplies. Hotel housekeeping carts and the women pushing them are invariably up to no good. -
Great show this week! It had me doubled over in laughter a few times. The way that the couchies were watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with their hands over their eyes? That was me the couple times I saw it. It's so cringe-y! Aw, Cathy and Destiney were so excited to see Persians on TV! Too bad the wife on the show only represented as a ho. There were some awesome looks given this week: - Lamont, when Princella picked food out of his teeth then brushed it off on his shirtsleeve. - Kenya, when Amanda said the one thing she wouldn't compromise in a marriage is the poo shooter. - Joe, when one of his daughters expressed her surprise that "they knew the lyrics together!" - Blake, when Emerson said Rachel Bloom didn't need to be worried about Blake writing original songs for her show. - Julie, when Brandy accused her of "eating a ton of box". - Rashawn, when Princella told him the aliens would abduct him because he's shaped just like them and his clothes would fit. And major kudos to the editors for cutting in a shot of one of the chihuahuas perking up his ears when the doctor on TV said "finger in the rectum."

I loved that show. Have we talked about I'll Fly Away? It aired for two seasons from 1991-93. It was primarily a family drama set in the South in the late 50s to early 60s amid the background of the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. Really touching and heartfelt. Won a lot of awards. It's kind of disappeared into a black hole now and isn't even available on DVD. Maybe 38 episodes doesn't seem short these days but there wasn't anything like it on TV then, and I can't think of much that's comparable now.

I'm currently torturing myself by re-watching the entire series on Netflix, only to re-experience my huge disappointment at the cancellation. I floved this show. Well ... I am fast-forwarding through any scenes with Terry, Lee Anne, or Preston. Yeah, yeah, police corruption. I'm only in it for Roy and Jamie. Their cases not related to Lee Anne are fine.

This has been building for a while and it's very possible I'm missing something basic, but men and their suit jackets are driving me crazy lately. If I as a woman am wearing a suit at work, I leave the jacket buttoned all day unless I'm hot and taking it off. I do not understand why men button their jackets when they stand and then unbutton them when they sit down. On talk shows, the host will do the button/unbutton ritual 5-6 times an hour. What the hell, guys? Are your jackets so tight when buttoned that you're unable to sit? Is it somehow discourteous to stand with your jacket open? Do men everywhere need to return to double-breasted? I don't get it. -

I think there's way too much focus on "germs" these days but I'm one of the few people I've ever known who washes her hands before every meal, including at restaurants. Remnant from my childhood in the 50s, I guess: "Wash your hands and come to dinner." I don't even think the concern was bacteria then -- it was plain old dirt. -
S01.E01: Who Are These People?
zxy556575 replied to ApathyMonger's topic in You, Me And The Apocalypse [V]
I enjoyed it very much but wouldn't really consider it to be a comedy. Although it's not a drama so I guess that's the only other option? The tone is fairly light overall, especially considering the subject matter, but everyone's personal stories felt real to me. I was sad for the banker and his loss, worried for the non-hacker mom, and motherly towards the nun. Rob Lowe was my least favorite character just because I felt it was, as the recapper said, a copy of his role on The Grinder. I didn't mind the priest character per se, just felt that was Rob overplaying it. On the whole, I reacted very positively but will be irked if the world really doesn't end at the end. -

I looked up the dorm room chef after the segment -- he typically hosts 2-4 dinners a week (the articles I saw varied) with a maximum of four guests. He has a shared dorm room with 3 bedrooms, a common room, and kitchen. Guests contribute an average of $15 per person to help defray the cost of the food. It's considered to be similar to a private pot luck or BYOB deal so he doesn't need a business license or health inspections. He's simply a private individual having people over for a meal. I was sorry there wasn't more time for the segment since Stephen is such an avid cook himself and I felt there was room for a deeper conversation. But he did have to get to the airport! -
Late Night With Seth Meyers - General Discussion

What was funniest to me about Seth calling Iowa voters, besides that no one recognized his name, was that he actually got the tiniest bit annoyed about his mother having a hot male personal trainer. -

I only read it on my tablet because I can resize the text. A bonus is that the digital version is always on time, but I've been wondering lately if even that's worth the effort. The magazine goes directly from the mailbox to the recycle bin these days. -
Okay, the pace is still glacial but I still really like it. I care about Danny and Alex and finding the truth. I was intrigued by Alex's parents, both faux and real. Of course Rampling always brings it, even though Danny wasn't buying -- at all -- her lies about Alex being a sexual user and manipulator. Can we trust Scottie? Not sure yet, but his "you don't know me" speech was pretty heartbreaking.

TDS 3.0: Season One Talk
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
I couldn't tell if Trevor was familiar with him or not since their conversation was so lightweight as to be almost nonexistent: Morocco, South Africa vs North Africa, foreign languages, thanks for being here. Well, also Trevor insulted him by stressing, twice, that nobody here knows who he is. I agree that Gad's episode of Comedians in Cars was pretty lackluster. I'd be curious to see his standup; I did like his joke about the East Coast vs West Coast answer as to why he's doing this.
