  1. I don’t know this Jonathan Haidt guy but I doubt “structural stupidity“ is a term social scientist use. He seemed to be pulling the “both sides” thing but only cited the Jan 6 insurrection, didn’t give an example of leftists resorting to violence. Seems like Bill liked this guy because he’s also anti woke, agreeing with Bill that academia is a source of “rot” when it comes to intellectual honesty. Haidt said there was a correlation in the rise of depression in young teen girls — 11-15 years of age from 2012, when the iPhones first had selfie cameras and IG took off. Except it’s doubtful many parents were giving their 11 and 12 year olds the latest iPhone. Don’t they usually get hand me downs? And it’s not like teen girls and even young women well into their 20s didn’t have self-esteem issues long before social media and smart phones. Instead of scrolling through IG, young teens were immersed in magazines targeted at them. They could feel just as bad looking at celebrities and models with Impossible to attain levels of beauty in magazines and other media as girls today looking at IG models. In New Rules Bill continued his hostility to the younger generations, touting instead that independents swung to Democrats yet 4 points. Well Gen Z voters swung to Democrats by mid double digits. In the PA governor race, the 18-29 Year old voters voted for Shapiro by a margin of 44 points. Overall, young voters canceled the votes of the over 65 voters who went for Republicans. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/gen-millennials-voters-2022-midterms-favored-democrats-stopping/story?id=93338313 So he should have thanked the youngest voter blocs. Instead he showed some picture of a headline from some dodgy paper claiming 1/3 of young voters suported communism.
  2. Tulum, Mexico, seems like it was purely a budget decision. She mentioned the NYC rents. So they chose the one below their budget, not the one above it. Both would be way below what NYC would cost..
  3. They arrive at Casa Roja, run by Allie’s friend Isela, a haven for refugees who fought corporate interests. The Foxes feel at unease even though Allie and Margot pick up chores to contribute to the community. Dina hates milking goats and has bleached her hair while Charlie spends hours in the jungle watching butterflies. Allie sets out to build a solar generator while also securing some supplies to make his family feel at home in Casa Roja. Only, Dina wants to get the fuck out. As soon as she gets a fake passport which Allie had promised her, she’s going back to civilization. But she discovers that Isela is selling off thE trawler, meaning they’ve checked into the fucking Hotel California, which as the song says they Can never check out. She tells Margot that Isela is selling the trawler and Margot realizes she has to get her kids out — and she isn’t going to type papers with the old typewriter and a small library that Allie got her. So she secretly refuels the trawler and plan to drug Allie but he discovers their ruse and have them watch the trawler sink. The megalomaniac Allie Is back!
  4. Wild sardine from Spain and Portugal are popular. They've not been fileted but packed in olive oil or tomato sauce. Yes it's all guts though they're smaller than the ones they roasted on this episode. They're good on crackers. They're headed towards Ronda, which is inland and on top of a ravine overlooking valleys around it. I know because I just booked a trip to Andalusia which includes Ronda and Malaga. Looking forward to the next episode.
  5. Looks like the climate refugee is this seasons beefcake.
  6. Michelle may be trying to get in with the in group so that she could keep doing Challenge seasons. So she tries to befriend the vets but Jay and her were not aligned with the vets, would always be lower priority than their alliance members. She needs to toughen up if she wants to win.
  7. Rolled my eyes at the strip show/charity thing. I know some women can be just as shallow as men but they all acted Pavlovian at the sight of shirtless men. Maybe this generation does react positively to things like dick pics. Teens and preteens supposedly have emotional problems linked to social media and the pressure to fit in, which means being sexualized when they're not ready to be. These girls aren't suppose to be much older than that. Seems like women who respond enthusiastically to male strippers tend to be older women, well past college years. Bela's oversexed personal is suppose to be an outlier but the other characters kind of mimic her at times. I couldn't believe the dean would agree initially to co-sign her loan. She obviously can't do that for every student she finds promising. The show doesn't have to be serious but maybe they could have delved a bit into the problems with college tuition costs, which are out of control. But they tried to create comedy out of it, having Kimberly take that job transcribing an Australian reality show.
  8. Show makes me smile while I'm watching. Seems all of Mindy Kaling's shows that I've watched have that quality. First season they really tried to give equal time to all 4 girls and presumably will do the same. But it seems Kimberly and Bela get into the most outlandish situations. Looks like they're going to have Leighton come out in a big way. Now they're trying to find other niches for Whitney besides soccer.
  9. The vets are so whiny and salty about being put in elimination. They expect these newbies to eliminate each other, so the vets numbers are greater. Jay and Michele don't own Johnny and Nanny a god damn thing. They should have put Johnny and Nanny in last week and also made them the primary pick. They were bullying Michele because they saw she was getting emotional about it. First of all, most of the vets would have Jay and Michele towards the bottom of their list. So it's absurd that they think J&M should protect them. What did they expect, for J&M to pick Horacio and his partner or Amber and her partner? Those are probably the only allies they have in the game. The vets are going to cover each other until the end. And Jordan's being ridiculous, he and Aneesa weren't trying to win before? They were just chilling (he used the world "floating") and now they're going to try to win Daily Challenges now? For once it would be good to see the rookies and newbies band together but B-M won't allow that because they think viewers would rather see Bananas and some other vets win. No Bananas is the last person I want to see win.
  10. Hard to believe this show comes from the same creator and show runner who made Veep. Meanwhile, one of the Veep writers creates and runs Succession.
  11. Kyle doesn’t get a clean record. His behavior is on tape and there will be a lot of social media reactions and clips. So while the captain didn’t put something on his nautical record, charter companies can find the clips if he should ply for more yacht charter jobs. Thats why I wouldn’t be surprised if this was scripted with his agreement. Then he can tell employers it was contrived for the show.
  12. This was planned out, a quick exit for Kyle, resulting in a charter where the crew is undermanned. They had a car and a hotel room ready for him. Who knows, maybe he agreed to a short stay going in and was going to raise hell as much as he could. They sure have the BD template down, of course the crew is going out and there is going to be friction between the crew as the drinks flow. The one deckhand who'd worked on large ships said they'd go weeks or months before the crew could do shore leave, which makes sense since those vessels could be out at sea for long periods. But these "super yachts" are going on at most 2-day charters, probably within an hour cruise to port. So that means the crew gets to party every couple of days, not necessarily their choice. They have to dress up and go somewhere, have a good meal but drink a lot so that they produce entertaining footage. They "fired" him based on his threats but he really was getting all up on Kasie. Oriana is too preoccupied with rank. Said she signed a deal to be second stew but the chief stew made her and Kasie equal, because that will lead to more drama, since Oriana thinks she's better than Kasie, whom she scorns for putting on an accent she didn't have when they previously worked together. Kasie says American accent is boring and she's a little bit of everything (ethnically) and her accent may change. OK lets see some more of the fjords, less of the crew drama! Fat chance of that.
  13. I thought that choice was ridiculous, unless they have a lot more money than they're letting on. Maybe he banked a lot of equity from a previous startup or something. Even $950k was a healthy budget, though maybe not in the Bay Area. But the idea that he could always work from Scotland for a Bay Area/California company seems dubious, unless he has some high level coding skills that employers are willing to accommodate him. Generally, tech companies are pushing their employees to return to office rather than work from home, even though many of them are spending most of their days in front of a computer screen. Wife said she hoped to find a job in event planning in Edinburgh. But the home she pushed for is much further than the other home they were considering. Who does all the upkeep though? In addition to all the rooms in that castle, it had huge grounds. Do they mow the grass there? I can believe that they decided they need to be near family, to help take care of the kids, though I don't know if elderly parents are always going to be able to do that. Another reason seems to be they're getting a bigger space than the apartment they lived in. Husband seems to believe being near the countryside is a great childhood for their children. Yeah they may love the animals but there's a big tradeoff in weather. Certainly for the $1.1 million they spent, they wouldn't even get 2 bedrooms in the Bay Area.
  14. Well for this Daily, the winners got $5k each.
  15. They have strict rules about posting in the media thread there. But Oliver talking about tHe Kenyan atrocities perpetrated by UK officers in Elizabeth’s name is entirely germane to that show. Doesn’t it depict Elizabeth cultivating former English colonies in Africa? Or Charles giving the most inadequate apology to a survivor of atrocities perpetrated in Canada, another country under the Crown.
  16. Ringer Prestige Podcast host said Valentina is a repressed lesbian. She doesn't want attention from men but she perked up when that female underling praised her.
  17. Episode starts with what turns out to be a closeup of the skin of Justin Theroux, as seen by some insect which bites him in the back of the neck. Their boat isn't capsized as the episode description says. The hull is pierced and it's taking on water. Allie is working on lifting the boat up to fix the leak when he collapses. Charlie, without Google, figures out he was bitten by a specific insect and the bite is life-threatening. So while Allie is out of commission, just burning up with fever, Margot and Charlie go look for medicine -- they had seen a plume from an oil rig -- and Dina is suppose to figure out how to patch the hole in the hull. This is suppose to show the kids have some of the ingenuity of Allie and maybe the passion/idealism of Margot. She tells Charlie the people at the oil rig may be wary of strangers coming up to them deep in the jungle. My thought was, they might feel a certain way about a woman. But she suspects the oil rig workers are probably having to fight off local tribes and she says sometimes violence is justified against forces which have a lot of money on their side. They see the oil rig camp has been the site of some shootout, with bullet holes and blood stains everywhere. No survivors left, not even corpses. They happen to find the drug for the exotic bug bite that Allie has and of course Allie is saved and Dina found a way to fix up the boat so their journey continues. They always say the journey is the reward. Seems like the writers really buy into that, because so far, the main characters are always on the way to something, but they face various obstacles and they overcome them and stick together. Do they have some ideas for what happens after they finally reach this community which has dropped out of the rat race? Or are they going to keep showing only the journey, at least through this season?
  18. Episode is called bull elephants, referring to what Daphne learned when she went on safari and learned of the social or asocial lives of male elephants, while the females and baby elephants lived joyfully in pod. Dominic gives Lucia and Mia 3000 Euros but then tells them he can't see them any more. So Lucia wants to find another rich guy because she's spending money as soon as she gets any. Dominic the feminist though starts looking at every woman in the restaurant not long after he blows off Lucia. Harper tries to spice up their love life but Ethan isn't interested. He isn't interested in Mia either, maybe just the porn on his laptop. Though in the previous episode, he ran by Lucia and then came home aroused, which made him open his laptop. Maybe they could spend some of that money on sex counseling. Instead Cameron turns out to be some kind of wealth manager so he's trying to rope Ethan into "investing" with him which involves hefty management fees for inferior returns than index funds. Portia has put Albie in the friend zone. She says he doesn't get her heart rate up. She should just tell him she wants to be friends but she doesn't want to be stuck on her own? Instead she wants the pool guy with the sensitive nips? Greg leaving for two days is bullshit. It's about 30 minutes to an hour to get to the nearest airport to Taormina, then probably have to fly to Rome or Milan and take an international flight there. If Greg goes back to the west coast since Tanya is from San Francisco, that's about 15 hours if not more. So over a day just to fly back to the US and then fly back to Sicily. What's he going to do, go to the US and turn around and fly back after like 8-10 hours? Valentina does look like a forlorn figure but her open contempt for Tanya is something in the service industry.
  19. The Ringer Prestige TV podcast had a great take on this episode. Their restaurants or food choices are a metaphor for black TV shows or art and black audiences. Popeyes is the comfort food that some black audiences prefer, even though it's noted that it's not even genuinely black cuisine, it was a recipe made by an Italian and sold back to black people as authentic black food. The sushi place, particularly the fugu, is the risky or adventurous choice, with some danger looming above. Atlanta is like the fugu, not like Popeyes at all. The owner/chef went on a diatribe about how black people turned out for some movie made by black artists and then lined up to come to his restaurant but they wanted to go to Popeyes and they put up Yelp reviews about the restaurant feeding them poisonous fish. He also talked about how black people couldn't trust black people from other parts of the country. So there isn't solidarity when it comes to black culture. It would be interesting to learn for instance that Atlanta draws more of a non-black audience than other shows or movies made by black artists. I don't know if that's the case but the show has certainly been boosted by critics, many of whom are not black. But Glover may be alluding to that.
  20. He's been shitting on Gen Z for groaning at his crappy jokes. Gen Z neutralized every Boomer vote (over 65) for Democrats. He was trying to boost DeSantis because he waged war on woke.
  21. Easy to root for them. Maybe they need to save up some money for things like IVF. Meanwhile they spend a bit more to be in a good location. It's not the distance, it's the unreliable roads in bad weather.
  22. Was laughing throughout this, especially when his run-in with the cop was a float sesh. Then when he broke in to the restaurant to free the others. Them driving away in that Maserati while they ate Popeyes would have been a great ending. But the actual ending wasn't bad either, Darius thinking this is all in his head. I get the joke that no matter how successful and self-aware these characters are, they crave Popeyes more than anything else. People could dine at Michelin star restaurants but they will still gorge on some fast or junk food. Realistically though, they can get Popeye's any time. For that matter, they can get sushi any time as well. Kind of surprised they were put off by the notion of raw fish, though maybe not as cold as in sushi. You don't see fugu that often in menus. I think most people are good with salmon, tuna, etc. I know Glover loved those anthology episodes, where the cast get a whole episode to themselves or where the regular cast isn't even in some of the episodes. But having more ensemble cast episodes like this one in the last two seasons wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world. Maybe Glover thinks that would be playing too much to the crowd or it's something he can always pull out so he'll try these different things. Imagine if after Atlanta was over and someone gave him carte blanche to do anything he wanted and he does an anthology show, with minimal or no recurring cast? My guess is it wouldn't have been received too well -- people would say "he used to make funny shows, but now he too serious." So by doing them as Atlanta episodes, he has a captive audience, who will mostly complain that they can't wait until more regular Atlanta episodes air. But he may be more interested in doing movies, either big projects as just an actor on those Star Wars franchises or maybe writing his own scripts but he can delve into a project for a couple of years instead of being under pressure to produce 10 episodes every couple of years.
  23. What else were they feeding them that cold Whoppers were such a treat?
  24. Is that from his child's mother? He must be doing well financially. Gonna be coming on future seasons of the Challenge saying "I got alimony and child support to pay!"
  25. June getting separated from Luke is just convenient if the end game is June and Nick. She also happens to have their baby. If she does take down Gilead in the final season, maybe she gets to rescue Nick in the process.
