  1. I never saw the episode, but that game terrified me when I was younger. It would not have ended well if I was a kid doing that game (heck, even now, I get a little nervous).
  2. I kind of feel that there were two challenges rolled into one. I'm not sure why they went foraging for this challenge. Could they have been inspired by the hyper-local, foraging style food found in Noma and other like restaurants, and created something with what they foraged (as I would have loved to learn more about the ingredients that they found). Or, simply focus on the ingredients discussed in the challenge, and created Scanadanavian-style dishes. I felt like the foraging was a bit of a throw-away, but would have been a great challenge on its own.
  3. That was a very emotional episode for me. I hadn't heard of Kira Johnson, so had to look up her story https://www.monstersandcritics.com/smallscreen/kira-dixon-johnson-death-who-was-mom-remembered-on-the-resident/ I had originally thought that the story related to Serena Williams and her issues when giving birth, but either way, WOC are not given the same standard of care in hospitals. I'm Canadian, and just last year, we heard stories about Indigenous women being denied access to their newborns until they agree to be sterilized. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/the-current-for-november-13-2018-1.4902679/indigenous-women-kept-from-seeing-their-newborn-babies-until-agreeing-to-sterilization-says-lawyer-1.4902693
  4. This article came across my desk this morning. https://www.fastcompany.com/90324114/how-christian-siriano-transformed-from-tv-star-to-a-red-carpet-staple-and-back-again I'm really liking him as a mentor on the show. I think he has found a nice line between being helpful, and letting designers know when they really need to change up their design (whether or not the designers listen is another story). Thanks @Sharpie66 for sharing the video of his S/S Runway show!
  5. I knew Benet’s team was going to win the minute he was picked as lead (and it was cool to watch him rock the prep challenge). There is a wildly successful Japanese/Italian restaurant in Vancouver, so I wonder if that’s where someone got inspiration http://www.kissatanto.com/
  6. From Wikipedia: Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder in which a person who is normally capable of speech cannot speak in specific situations or to specific people. Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or social anxiety. I don't mean to belittle the condition at all. I've just become wary of the inspiration porn out there.
  7. Heyyyyyyyy!!! There was a maturity to All Ready and Poppin' John's performances that I really appreciated. OTOH, there was something that really bothered me about the Crazy 8's performance. I think it was the attention paid to the one member who has selective mutism. I feel the edit that's coming is that somehow she's going to be "cured" of it through the power of dance/this show, and it makes me feel cringy when I watch their performances.
  8. What season was it where the women were eliminated one by one until one woman and all the men remained? I think part of the issue is the smaller population of Canada. We have fewer people to apply, and I wonder if the majority of people who apply for the show are white males. How to encourage chefs of colour and female chefs to apply for these shows, so that we can get better representation of our country? It would make for a better show, as we’d get to see a wider variety of dishes (provided that the judges understand how to judge dishes they might not be familiar with).
  9. I just came across this, as we're watching Season 8 in my class right now. https://www.popsugar.com/fashion/photo-gallery/17889204/image/17889418/Jay-McCarroll-Project-Runway-Season-1-Winner
  10. I'd have to go back and check, but I think it was a coverstitch machine, which is a specialised machine used to make hems on knit garments. Though, it could have also been a serger, that's used to stitch seams on knits and finish raw edges. Often, there may be only one serger or coverstitch per thread colour (as it uses anywhere from 2-5 spools of thread per colour), so it is legit that there may be only one of those machines.
  11. I loved Pump up the Volume! Off to go listen to Everybody Knows.
  12. I agree with you about the guy from Tofino, but I don’t have any other predictions. Though, I am hoping good things for the plant based chef, as I believe she adds some much needed variety to the dishes. I think that some chefs would honestly not know what todo if they couldn’t cook with meat. I believe this is the earliest that I’ve ever seen a Reataurant Wars in this or the American show. Looking forward to seeing it too!
  13. If I'm watching live, I use the filler time to get reading and housework done, making sure that I'm back for the actual dancing. Luckily, I was away last night and PVR'd the show, which means I get to FF to my heart's content tonight!
  14. And a new season has begun! One of the cheftestants is from the city next to me, so I'll be interested to see how he does (and if I ever run into him on the street!). Top Chef Canada hasn't really been known for drama, so I wonder how much Takeshi's statements when they were choosing the final chef to join the competition, and how much was for not great food (I suspect that it's more the former than the latter). I hope that this is a good season!
  15. As @carrps mentioned above, the more "curves" that a model has, the more difficult it is to fit. Pattern drafting is taught expecting that the model has a B cup bust--if a woman is larger, there's going to be fit issues right off the top that will need to be addressed (not to mention shoulders, tummies, bottoms, hips, biceps, etc.). A thin, straight, small chested model is just easier to design for--they are basically a walking hanger (no offense to anyone who has that body type. You rock whatever body you have!)
  16. So much this! I have felt that both of her performances were contemporary pieces that happened to have some pointe, rather than a contemporary ballet piece.
  17. This show makes me really miss America’s Best Dance Crew.
  18. I was struck at how much Sonia’s model, Vishjin, looks like Alex Wek! While I’m glad that Hester created a successful look, I noticed a pretty janky hem on that skirt. I finally convinced Mr. Hula-la to watch, as he is still angry from All-Stars last night, and now he’s angry again. Luckily, Nadine’s elimination made him a little calmer. Couple time is saved!
  19. Biddell live streamed his watch party. Among some of the tea that he spilled was the fact that all of the designers were in separate rooms during the runway, so this was his first time actually seeing the other sewtestants’ collections. His audience was so not happy with the Michelle win (just like most of the people on this board).
  20. It’s actually a conspiracy theory. I feel my world was better before I knew this (it’s about midway down the page). https://www.marieclaire.com/celebrity/g22026064/royal-family-conspiracy-theories/
  21. To me, World of Dance should showcase (or, I guess “duel”) the amazing types of dance out there in the world. I love me a great hip hop group, but even I stopped paying attention after a while.
  22. I did go to a shower that was cut short, as the mom to be went into labour. She was in labour during the event, but it got serious and she left to go to the hospital. We stayed and cleaned up. She delivered that night. Can’t remember how far along she was, though.
  23. I bet bad guys don't wear seat belts, so the same though occurred to me.
  24. Ne-Yo, I’d love to know how a duel dance is different from a showcase dance. Shouldn’t the duel be about showcasing who you are as a dancer? On a personal note, I could never do said duels, as I never watch the dances that I’m competing against. I watch the floor or the wall, but never the dancers. And to have to watch them rehearse for a few days? Not gonna happen.
  25. As someone who sews, I cried at all that beautiful silk being ruined in some of those dresses. But, at least I saw Iris Apfel! I really appreciate her comment about women wanting sleeves, and thinking about a wide range of ages and types of women who might wear their designs. I direct that towards the judges, who are always harping on designers’ outfits being too “old/matronly/not for someone who is 20”.
