I'll join you at that table, and up it one: I generally hate all musical interludes/episodes on any show that isn't actually a musical. An occasional show can pull it off, but most of them just suck the air out of the show.
-
Well, there's also the whole 'make fun of it in an MST3K way'. But yeah, AR makes that movie.

It's official - Sarah Bunting is now the worst person ever on this show. Well, okay, not worse than the valet who raped Anna, but second-most awful in her own special way. At least the newspaper magnate in Season Two was entertaining, and Mr. Bates' wife was played by Maria Doyle Kennedy, so the acting wasn't an issue like it is for this Bunting woman. UGH!

I am ashamed to say I got it wrong. As soon as it was revealed, I was "OMG - of course!!!" but I really couldn't come up with anything beforehand. It was just another pop culture category. I mean, they had a Channing Tatum category a couple of weeks back. Not my kind of thing, but I don't have a problem with categories about current pop stars/actors/writers, etc. Plus, I got all those answers right.

That rigidity also suited his character in The Untouchables. And personally, I really liked him in Tin Cup, where he - gasps - plays someone who's not rigid at all. Yeah, really.

Oscar Snubs: They Wuz Robbed!
proserpina65 replied to DollEyes's topic in Everything Else About Movies
I always figured there weren't enough Academy voters willing to give an Oscar to a performance which found some sympathy for a truly horrible person, but given some of the winning performance since then, maybe there's something to your supposition. Although I really liked Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive, I still believe Ralph Fiennes was robbed that year; his performance was nothing short of brilliance. -
I was screaming "Edward the Confessor, you idiots!" at the tv, but then, I was a medieval history major. But soooo many TSs - ugh. And wild, stupid guesses. (I'll confess, though, that although I know what a howdah is, I couldn't remember the word to save my life at that moment.) That was a really terrible game, worse than the one two nights ago and I thought that one was as bad as it could get. Wrong.

2015 Awards Season Discussion

I think the late screener issues played a huge role in Selma getting far fewer Oscar nominations than expected. For late opening films, screeners sent to Academy members have become vital. -
It's my mother's absolute all-time favorite movie. I cannot count the number of times I've seen it as a result. I would also have kicked ass in that category, and was sad when none of the contestants got Olivia de Havilland.

I got Metamorphosis at the last moment as a blind guess, but probably wouldn't have had time to write it down.

TV Themes: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
proserpina65 replied to David T. Cole's topic in Everything Else TV
My top five tv opening themes - sans lyrics division: 1) Game of Thrones 2) Hawaii 5-0 (original flavor) 3) The Rockford Files 4) The Wild, Wild West 5) Barney Miller (honorable mention goes to The Equalizer - almost a tie for 5th) -
I actually dozed off partway through. Luckily I was taping it so I saw the rest but I wasn't greatly impressed. It was nice enough, and yeah, Robson Green on my tv again, but the mystery just seemed lackluster to me, and that woman with whom the lovely vicar (yes, he was lovely) is apparently in love - just no. Still, I'll probably watch the rest of it because, you know, RG.

Oscar Snubs: They Wuz Robbed!

True, but Eddie gets some of the blame for making the movie in the first place. What a waste of his talent. (Yeah, I know, that kind of crap has been good for him, box office-wise.) -
Shipper Wars: Favorite And Least Favorite TV Couples
proserpina65 replied to mstaken's topic in Everything Else TV
I'm with you on this one. Meredith is no great prize, but Derek is an unmitigated ass. Nevermind that his behavior to her early in the first season was a textbook definition of sexual harassment, the dickhead was married and couldn't be bothered to tell her until his wife showed up. And then he later had the nerve to practically call her a whore for sleeping with other men. UGH! -
Tune!: Best TV Moments Involving Music
proserpina65 replied to DollEyes's topic in Everything Else TV
Grey's Anatomy completely overdoes the "a song for every freaking scene" thing, especially last season with all the 80s remakes, but there have been 3 moments which, for me, rank with the best: Breathe by Anna Nalick playing over the scene leading up to the bomb detonation in Season 3 Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol playing as Alex convinces Izzy to let Denny go in Season 3 Like A Virgin playing over Cristina's confrontation in Burke's office near the end of their reunion episode last season -
If you ever get the chance to see him in Rush, do. It might not change your mind about him, but he's definitely not beefy in that. More lithe and, well, the word 'slinky' comes to mind. And not in a 'coiled metal child's toy' way. ;-)

Oscar Snubs: They Wuz Robbed!
proserpina65 replied to DollEyes's topic in Everything Else About Movies
Some of these are valid; a lot of them are crap. I will say, though, that had Eddie Murphy not screwed himself with that piece of shite Norbit, he would've taken home the Oscar he so greatly deserved. -

I agree that Halle Berry shouldn't have won that year, but Nicole didn't deserve an Oscar for Moulin Rouge; she deserved it for The Others, for which, I believe, she wasn't even nominated. -
I thought he said 'sonogram' which Alex accepted with the comment "or ultrasound". I actually knew the FJ from the date in the clue. Yeah, medieval studies in college, although the 12th century was a little before my particular period.
-
Man, last night's game was awful! They left so many clues on the board at the end, it was embarrassing. And as much as I like to see female contestants do well on Jeopardy, Rebeca winning would've been a travesty, given how badly she played for the most part.

I think the chanting was to get Miller, Ichabod and herself out of the painting, not specifically to stop the bleeding, but I could be wrong about that. I kinda stopped caring a bit long before that scene. I heard the line, and was amused by it, but thought it was them getting handsy. Shows you how much attention I was paying even that early in the episode.
-
They were an absolute vacuum of chemistry. Acting textbooks should use them as an example of the very opposite of what chemistry between characters looks like.
-
Okay, so the painting storyline had promise as an idea. But in execution, it was actually really dull. Although the line about 'get a room' was somewhat amusing. Can we please just go back to Season 1 when Katrina was a secondary player and not sucking up all the oxygen in the room for entire episodes? (And I say that as someone who wanted to like the character and originally had high hopes for her.) Agreed. Either have the hair loose, or have him wear it in a queue, but for god's sake, keep that abomination off his head.

Oscar Snubs: They Wuz Robbed!

I loved the cleverness of the dialogue in Shakespeare In Love. I'm not surprised it appealed to your script writer friend. Elizabeth presented a problem for me. On one hand, it was a beautifully put-together film in pretty much every way, and I would've given the Oscar to Cate Blanchett's performance; but on the other hand, I was a Medieval & Renaissance Studies major in college, so the historical liberties taken (and they were immense) bothered me too much to give it Best Picture. Ah, the difficulties of being a historian watching historically based films . . . it's a dilemma I often face, but when the film deals with one of the periods I studied, it's really hard to get past. Plus, I still have very fond memories of Elizabeth R with the magnificent Glenda Jackson.
