  1. In completely different media coverage: http://pagesix.com/2014/08/14/real-life-oitnb-character-lands-book-deal/ LOLOL, this is going to be interesting. I actually really like and respect Kerman irl, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to this soap opera playing out publicly this spring, just as Netflix is ramping up the publicity for season 3 to premiere in June 2015. You gotta hand it to Harpers, they know exactly what they're doing with the timing. They'll be able to piggy back on all the attention Orange will be getting anyways in May, and the interviews are liable to be amazing. I'm gonna be reaching for the popcorn, anyhow.
  2. I wonder if the fact that that person is talking about state prison vs. federal makes a big difference? Because most accounts I've read of the federal penitentiaries for women suggest it's not actually that big a problem, and Kerman didn't witness much herself. But I think in the case of women the state prisons probably house more hardened criminals on average than the federal pens, since the federal pens probably have non-violent drug offenders, fraud offenders and tax evaders, things of that nature. Whereas typical violent crimes are going to land you in a state prison, not a federal one, I think....Just spitballin, not sure either way.
  3. I've got some bad news for you, then.... Yeah, they're both blonde. The similarity is striking.
  4. Big Boo's getting a flashback ep [the part about her possibly dying is just speculative clickbait]-- http://www.idigitaltimes.com/articles/23891/20140718/orange-new-black-season-3-spoilers-big-boo-backstory-flashback-release-date-dies-carrie-black-lea-de.htm

  6. Oh, I see. I kind of felt like you were arguing the show was awesome and Sue was holding it back, so I just wanted to register my own personal "LOL, no." ha. I think it's more a problem with Ryan Murphy than American network television, though. Even though the golden age of television we've ushered in has largely been attributable to premium [and some basic] cable providers, I can't think of a network show that's as woefully inadequate as Glee. Ryan Murphy is so fucking overrated I can't even.
  7. Personally don't know if "outgrow" is the right word, at least for me. The show's heyday and Sue's went hand in hand. You could almost point out that right around the time that character hit her expiration date, so did Glee. But I am glad Jane Lynch finally snagged a starring role and an Emmy award after years of "hey it's that guy" quasi-recognition.
  8. Netflix is smart and has taste, so no go there, but I can't speak for certain for the others. My guess is they'd all back quickly away from this like a pile of poo you've almost stepped in.
  9. Yeah, carrying the money is technically a money laundering charge. I don't think you can really compare Piper and Poussey's crimes. It's apples and oranges and we also haven't even seen definitively what landed Poussey in there, just heard some off-hand comments about how it was related to dealing marijuana.
  10. In, like, two scenes. lol I can tell them apart, it's not that hard. I meant that I thought her performance was good in that episode. As for a disclaimer, I think as long as the academy voters aren't legally blind they're gonna be ok. It was clearly a different person. I was surprised to later learn it was her biological twin, but obviously they'd gotten a male actor to stand in for her.
  11. Maybe, but Piper also took a plea deal, which leads to very different sentencing guidelines. We don't know if Poussey pled out or fought the charge and lost, but with that sentence it's likelier the latter. Which is not to say that blacks don't get the short end of the stick in terms of incarceration for drug crimes, because I'm sure they do, I'm just not sure that comes to bear here since their crimes and sentencing were no doubt under very different circumstances. If Orange wanted to explore that issue I'm sure they'd illustrate it with a more similar or even identical crime resulting in different punishments so as to really gaslight it.
  12. These are for season 1, though. I'd definitely argue Yael deserves a nod next year for season 2 [and I think they'll submit her], but I don't remember her doing anything last year that warranted an Emmy nomination. I mean, she was great, but not Emmy nominated great. Not through any fault of her own, but because she didn't have that kind of material to work with in season 1. I kind of agree that Laverne Cox's nomination is a bit of tokenism but she WAS really good in her flashback episode so it's not a huge stretch to me. I see a lot of people saying it should have gone to Manning instead, but frankly Manning's kind of just playing a slightly more cartoonish version of herself. Tucky's not much of a stretch for her.
  13. Good in depth cover story on Jenji Kohan by the Hollywood Reporter: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/orange-is-new-black-showrunner-723403 And they talk to Jennifer Euston about what it was like to cast Orange, and what she looked for for certain roles: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/orange-is-new-black-casting-723404 And a nice little piece from the LA Times, sitting down with Jenji, Uzo, Taylor, Laverne and Kate: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/tv/la-et-st-en-orange-is-the-new-black-cast-20140807-story.html
  14. Had to peek in when I saw that casting news. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. God, this show is terrible. ETA: I can't even get mad about that, because Ryan Murphy's enormous issues here are so patent and pathetic and embarrassingly laid bare.
  15. A write-up by the Hollywood Reporter on the Emmy panel yesterday moderated by Chelsea Handler featuring Jenji and the nominated actors [also Biggs and Delaria, randomly]: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/orange-is-new-black-stars-723388 ETA: Here's a better, more substantial write-up of the For Your Consideration talk by Variety: http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/orange-is-the-new-black-chelsea-handler-emmy-panel-1201276164/ Little interview with Taylor at TV Guide, including some hints / spec on where Piper and Alex are in season 3: http://www.tvguide.com/News/Orange-New-Black-Season-2-Piper-Taylor-Schilling-Alex-OITNB-1085284.aspx
  16. Guess so. I think mostly what they were going for was something a bit twee or lame on her part, so it worked better than if she'd picked, I dunno, the Beatles. Also easier to get the rights no doubt.
  17. I think Soso's about 20. I think she would have been an infant when those songs came out, at that. I mean, sure she could know them from some soft rock classic hits station or something, but it did seem a bit dated for that to be her "go to."
  18. Nice little chat with Jennifer Euston, the Emmy-nominated casting director [she has previously won for Girls and The Pacific]-- http://www.goldderby.com/news/6952/orange-is-the-new-black-emmys-jennifer-euston-tv-entertainment-news-7539182640.html
  19. From your lips to God's ears, OrangeCrush! I have been happy to see how much promo Netflix is throwing Taylor's way, and I've seen some insiders/critics say they think she has the best shot of upsetting JLD. She is great in Veep, but a threepeat's kind of boring IMO. I hope the voters want to mix things up a bit this year.
  20. I dunno. The hate sex seems to have been filmed for episode 3, so that gives her 2+ episodes to stew over what Piper did *before* it. So it itself may entail some resolution. Hard to say. I'm going to be chomping at the bit for these come June 2015 tho. I was pretty "meh" on the Piper-less second episode this season, but I don't think I'll have that problem next year.

  22. The story behind making 17 key props from seasons 1 & 2: http://www.vulture.com/2014/07/orange-is-the-new-black-props-explainer.html
  23. I really hope there's no one-off Big Bad like Vee in season 3. They got their yayas out on that front and tried something new, and that's all well and good, but I hope it's out of their system. I'd like the struggles in season 3 to come from our established characters. I know there is one prominent piece of casting news in Mary Steenburgen, but I don't expect she'll hijack the season in quite the same way. At least I hope not.
  24. Nice quick chat with Piper and Larry about their feelings about the show and Piper's interest in prison reform: http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Orange-is-the-New-Black-author-and-husband-tell-5647662.php
