  1. We're totally in the same page. I was trying to express myself without verging into forbidden areas, and got my virtual tongue tied. 😉
  2. I know you're just talking about the excessive fireworks, but no way!* :D I refuse to let anybody steal my 4th of July joy. Between some folks saying we shouldn't celebrate the 4th for reasons, and other folks trying to co-opt the day and act like they own the right to be patriotic, I've just about had it. I decided to celebrate regardless of whether other people think it should be celebrated, or whether other people think I don't have the right to celebrate it. And now I'm shutting up before I get myself in trouble. LOL @GaT, that sounds awful. I would have freaked out when they started pounding on the door. Yikes! *edited to add, I'm fine shutting down excessive home fireworks displays, I just don't want the whole day cancelled. I don't think I expressed myself well.
  3. I read the article, and the longer article they're pulling it from, and this is the only quote, even in the longer piece: I'm left wondering what happened? I'm bigger, so I 100% empathize with her and know that it's not always something you can put your finger on. It just seems a little "click bait-y" for them to throw that one line in there, knowing Potter will get them lots of eyes, and then that's all there is?
  4. Daytime fireworks? What's the point? Lol @Blergh - I'm curious. What do you think would be appropriate in that situation? I tend toward "just don't mention it", but then I feel heartless.
  5. If you want to get away from fireworks, I can 100% assure you that moving to "the country" isn't the route to take. My tiny town (in Illinois, where everything bigger than a sparkler is illegal) is booming right now. Last night, too. I actually like fireworks, even though I don't have any urge to set them off myself. I just wish everybody would be safe, and quit an hour after dark.
  6. Lots of people lie, cheat, steal... and still get to manage their own lives.
  7. Britney says she never wanted to be in lithium in the first place, so if that's the objection to her getting pregnant, take her off it. That article on the New Yorker is heartbreaking. How does that happen? Yikes. How is she (or anybody) supposed to ever get out? When she can't even hire her own lawyer, and instead gets one assigned by the court, whose gravy train will end with the conservatorship? You'll never convince me this isn't 100% about the money. If she was poor, she'd be free to make whatever shitty life choices she wants, and nobody would care. They obviously aren't doing this out of love and concern.
  8. Hmmm, maybe? If I was thinking about it. But it probably wouldn't occur to me one way or the other. A tourist, yes.
  9. Sha"Carri says she's not looking for empathy, but she gets mine anyway. She knew she was breaking the rules when she did it, and her actions have consequences. But I still feel badly for her. I think this shines a light on the pressure these (often quite young) athletes are under, and how little support they receive. And then x1000 for those who are in sports where they have basically a week every four years to set up the rest of their lives.
  10. I can see a circumstance where someone was tipping big with company money in the hopes of securing certain "favors", so... :-/ @shapeshifter, where I work, there's only one area code, and nobody would think twice about it. If I was taking down a number and somebody started with the area code, it would actually kind of annoy me. Like, "I KNOW!!!" 😆 Where I live is actually closer to the state line, so it's more common to use it, especially because some people have cell phones from "across the river" and their area code doesn't match where they live. But even then, if somebody has a common prefix, it's not necessary. I probably already know the area code. Small town life. 🤷‍♀️ Eta - I can't imagine a standardized form not having a place for it, though. Weird!
  11. I actually love showers, and have given tons of them, but if you don't want to go, don't. I'm sure no one will think twice. If you want, you could send a gift card with regrets, but it's not necessary. :) My shower-related peeve is how crappy most of them are these days. Like, zero effort. Renting a winery and opening gifts isn't a shower, sorry. I did a baby shower for someone at work, and everybody was going on and on complimenting it, which was nice, but it was so basic. Like, I had brought a mason jar, threw in some grocery store daisies, and sat it on a piece of burlap. And people couldn't believe I went to "so much trouble". Okay.... Edited because I just realized this isn't the Pet Peeve thread, but most of the crappy showers were hosted by family, so... :D
  12. @peacheslatour, I'm so sorry. My peeve is how often people toss around mental health diagnoses, especially PTSD. (I don't mean when it's clearly meant to be funny, like "I still have PTSD from that awful haircut!") I mean when people assume that every veteran, or every person who has lived through a trauma has PTSD. The reality is, we don't know why it is sometimes triggered. Two people can go through the same experience, and one will suffer from PTSD while the other is relatively unscathed. Vets will often say that they saw lots of awful things, but some seemingly innocuous event is driving their PTSD years later. Basically, I feel like it diminishes the reality of how life-limiting these conditions can be. It's not just having bad days. For example, a FB friend was recently looking to get a dog for her husband, "because of his PTSD from Iraq". Now, there are charities who gift service dogs to vets for this reason, but the dogs are specially trained and the vets have official diagnoses and treatment plans. I don't know, it just rubbed me the wrong way. Like, there are people out there who are struggling to get their necessary service dog admitted into places, and you're using it as an excuse to get your husband a puppy for his birthday.
  13. I took an estate planning course several years ago. One thing I remember them emphasizing it that your medical power of attorney and financial power of attorney should be different people, and ideally, neither of them should be your estate's main beneficiary. Basically, you don't want the person deciding whether to pull your plug to stand to gain financially from that decision. This is exactly the same to me. The person who decides if she's mentally well enough to tour should not be then deciding where the money goes. The people who gain the most from her continued conservatorship should not be dictating her mental health care. It's completely insane. Literally EVERYONE around her has a financial stake in continuing. Who stands for her? In the juvenile system, there's an organization called CASA that provides volunteer advocates to children who have experienced abuse or neglect. The volunteer helps the child until they've aged out of the system or been placed in a permanent home. They speak up for the child in court to make sure the child has someone in their corner who doesn't have ulterior motives. Britney is an adult, but I think she needs someone like this.

    Tennis Thread

That's weird. It's 5-4 in the third set here. I assumed it was live. I guess I'd best get out of this thread. Lol
  15. Six months? GTFO. There's no amount of "education" that will redeem this louse.
  16. Ana Farris isn't homely, but Christy is definitely not a 10 on my scale. She's also broke, schlumpy, addicted to drugs, alcohol, and gambling, has two kids who hate/ignore her, and lives with her mother. And yet she's had Baxter's FIL (Harry Hamlin) and Adam's brother (Steven Weber) both willing to give her the world, basically. By most people's standards, they would both be way out of her league. In the end, she ended both relationships, because even though they looked good on paper, they were assholes. But the show presented them as if they were a viable match. All that to say that while I completely agree with your statements as to television in general, on this show I think the "desirable guy paired with a less desirable woman" has actually been done. One thing I really love about Mom is that it's never been written that you have to be thin/hot/young to be loved, or desirable. Obviously there's a lot of frank discussion of hotness and attraction, but everyone (except poor Wendy) has gotten to have sexual and romantic relationships. On most shows, only Jill and Christy would be shown as sexual beings.
  17. I'd love to date in a world where Andy is a 4. I'm close to Jill's age, and in my dating pool, he'd be a solid 7. Single hot guys in their 40s are single for a reason, in my experience. I'd love to meet an Andy. Jill is rich and beautiful, but most certainly single for a reason. So I don't see a disparity in their date-ability. I like them together, and I hope they're able to make it work. Jill may not need a man and baby, but I think it's perfectly fine to want them.
  18. Leaked photos from Season 2. Very mildly spoilery... Basically crowd shots at an event. No plot spoilers.
  19. I don't think it helps Penelope's cause that she's played by a 30+ year-old actress. NC is great in the role, but she absolutely does not come off as a teenager. (I would say the same for CJ as Eloise.) It will help when they need to time-jump the characters later, but for now, neither is bringing the naive innocence that the current roles require. It makes it easy for the viewer to forget how young they're supposed to be.
  20. Yep, they've got no fire. Listless on defense, careless with the ball. And I think they got thrown off mentally when they got behind off the top. So many times, I've seen them pass to someone who's standing unguarded on the wing, only for that person to hesitate and pass it off instead of taking the shot. Meanwhile, Baylor has made approximately 73 3-point shots. LOL
  21. I wish they'd stop with the artsy camera angles. I know it's a boring game, and the director is probably more bored than anyone. But it makes it hard to follow the play. Just keep it on the elevated view from half-court, thanks. I agree with what Sir Charles was saying at the half. Baylor should be leading by way more than they are. I honestly don't understand how Gonzaga is still in this, as poorly as they're playing.
  22. Two thoughts at halftime: The Baylor guys are HUGE. Not just tall, but massively built. Can we dispense with the chin straps on the head coaches? I'm all for mask wearing, but they're nowhere near anyone during the game, and they're clearly not going to wear them, regardless. It's just distracting and stupid-looking.
  23. I would hope that some of the actors were already contracted or at least optioned, surely? You need Violet, Anthony, and Penelope at a minimum for future seasons. You can't very well have a family drama without the matriarch and patriarch, and Lady Whistledown drives so much story (although I suppose you don't have to see Pen herself). The other characters I think you can explain away, although I'd hate to miss the HEA for any of the siblings.
  24. I'm old, so I remember when people were all, "WTF is a Zag?" and all anybody knew about them was that John Stockton had played there. So Gonzaga will always be a Cinderella team to me, even when they're seeded #1. It's not like they're Duke, or Kentucky, or (shudders) Kansas. Go Zags!
  25. Somebody has been having fun with Jalen Suggs's entry on Wikipedia...
