I think they said she was the best they'd ever heard, which I took to mean Katy, Luke, and Lionel. I'm not sure that means the best ever or just in the time since they've been judges. They also said they'd never experienced the crew clapping, either. Abi was lovely, and I've re-watched her a couple of times.

I think it had to be a revelation about something heinous he did to one of her sisters. This show was really about the bond between the five of them and the lengths they'd go to in order to protect each other. For a long time, JP managed to stifle that instinct in Grace, but once she learned how terribly he'd hurt Eva, her love for her sister pierced the veil.

I was speculating about this with my stepdaughter last week and we both think it's Blánaid who ultimately kills him. The Garvey sisters protect each other fiercely; what lengths would they go to for their niece? Sure, but Becka was excited and she doesn't seem particularly business-savvy. They've made her out to be somewhat irresponsible and "flighty" until now so it doesn't surprise me in the least that once she had John Paul's word, she went full steam ahead. She even said that she was the only one of the sisters who didn't hate him prior to his screwing her over. Can't wait to find out what happened to Bibi's eye!

They're obviously setting up Matt (aka "Pretty Eyes") with Becka (who also has pretty eyes) so Matt will be conflicted between saving the family company and the Garveys. I'm a U2 fan so I knew Eve Hewson before this (she's actually a good actress) but the others are new to me (except Daryl McCormack from Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), but I really like this cast so far.

I'm 45 and the oldest of six grandchildren. I have one grandparent left (my maternal grandma) and I also felt William's speech deep in my soul. I feel so fortunate to have had my grandparents be such a huge part of my life for so long (my maternal grandpa passed in 2019). It's such a special relationship and thinking about losing my last remaining grandparent guts me. Absolutely the best part of this episode, by far. Otherwise it was just such a let down after the train last week.

The scene between Kate and Rebecca felt authentic to me, because Kate was so coddled as a girl and was such a Daddy's Girl, to boot. I also don't think you really understand who your parents are as people until you have some more life experience under your belt. They're parents; they don't have history and needs and wants and all the complexities that make us human! My favourite part of the Kate/Rebecca story tonight was when Rebecca was talking to Miguel about how overwhelmed and unsure she is, and then there was that shot of Kate eavesdropping, and the look on her face as the penny dropped. (Really great acting by teen Kate.) She actually thought about someone other than herself for just a moment. Too bad it didn't last. Regarding Deja, don't kill me, but I think she had a bit of a point about her maturity. But only a bit. She has experienced far more than most girls her age. She was the de facto adult when she lived with her mom, and she had to grow up fast due to Shauna's inability to parent. That said, she has no idea what awaits her if she moves in with Malik and his daughter. I was in my 40s before I moved in with my boyfriend and his daughter, and there are still days when it's a lot. Add to that the pressure of finishing high school and starting college, and it's just a recipe for disaster. Still, I think Beth had a point when she told Randall that his approach would only backfire. So what now? Kevin... oh, Kevin. He's such a mess. I never liked Cassidy, but her response to Kevin fully brought me around. Not to them as a couple, but I'd watch the hell out of Cassidy dropping truth bombs on all the Pearsons. How refreshing.

Like you suggest in your post, I'm not sure this was a fully considered decision. Maybe Deja thought about possibly having sex with Malik (which would explain the dress) beforehand, but the decision wasn't cemented until she was in Boston. And I'm certainly not suggesting that Deja is mature enough to have sex, but like someone else said, it's not outside the realm of possibility that Malik had some condoms. For one thing, his girlfriend was coming to town, and what teenage boy doesn't hope he'll get some? Given that Malik already has a child, it's entirely possible that he did have some on hand, just in case. I'm more concerned with your other suggestion, that Deja didn't decide to have sex with Malik until she saw firsthand what was going on with Jennifer. The look on Deja's face when Jennifer was there followed by Deja taking that tag off her dress tells me that she felt threatened and was looking for a way to cement her own relationship with Malik, so I think you're absolutely correct. Anyway, regardless of if Deja's mature enough to be having sex, it's happening, and I'd rather see Beth take charge and get her on contraceptives than the alternative. Oh, yeah. The last thing a teenager wants taken away is their privacy.
-
We don't know if Deja and Malik used a condom, so I think it's a bit presumptuous to say that they aren't mature enough to take precautions. If anyone should be prepared, it's Malik. But even if they are using condoms, it's still wise of Beth to get Deja on birth control ASAP.

I, too, liked the male character far more than the female one in this. She gives him hell because to her, he's not treating her condition as real, but I agree that she was using it as a bit of crutch. She wasn't willing to meet him halfway. He'd stay up half the night to be with her and mess with his own schedule to accommodate her, but she really didn't want to compromise. And not setting her alarm when he made it abundantly clear how important brunch with his mom was to him was really inconsiderate, to say the least. Her selfishness made me wonder what it was that he loved about her so much.

That's what I got out of it, too. Years ago, when my friends and I went to Europe, we had all kinds of converters, but still blew the fuse in our room when we tried to plug in our phones because of the old wiring. Lily Collins is very likeable and I am enjoying the French scenery, so I'm in for now. I don't think it'll take long for this premise to wear thin, though.

Mansion-Apartment-Shack-House. It was basically a game where you wrote "predictions" for your/your friends' futures, with the names of people you liked and how many kids you would have and the car you would drive. This has a more detailed explanation: https://mashplus.com/how-to-play-mash/

Kate makes me crazy, honestly. I hate that everyone tiptoes around her weight to their own detriment. Toby should be proud of what he's accomplished in getting healthier, especially in light of his heart attack, and Kate should be supportive of his efforts. But as usual, it's turned around to be all "oh, poor Kate, she's burdened by so much, and she has such a difficult time with her weight issues and let's not celebrate our own achievements because it might make her feel bad." I'm so glad that her new neighbour got her to pull her head out of her own butt for just a moment. Maybe one day she'll realize that other people have problems, too.

AngelaMH66, are you in the US? I work for a trustee in Canada. I've been doing this work (on and off) for 10 years and I've never known a trustee to behave like Renata's and Gordon's did. For one thing, we never seize assets at the first meeting. We do an accounting of the assets clients have and then determine their realizable value, etc., but generally speaking, we give clients the chance to repurchase their assets from their estates. So, we'd never force someone to just hand over their wedding ring, for example. I'm not overly familiar with the US system, but this whole scene seemed OTT to me, and took me out of the story a bit.

My best friend was born in Croatia and when we talked about this show the other day, she recalled that she was in senior kindergarten at the time and they weren't allowed outside at recess. I'm in Canada and vaguely remember hearing about it, but it didn't directly affect us in anyway, so it was just a thing that happened somewhere else.

Unless they do a massive time jump and cut out the tour (and a big chunk of the time when Midge is proving herself as a comic), I can't see that happening. They may be taking liberties with the accuracy of the timeline, but Lenny Bruce didn't die until 1966, so fingers crossed, we'll see him around for a while yet. ETA: I agree with those of you who see the similarities between Joel and Gilmore Girls' Christopher, and yet somehow it didn't bother me to have Midge end up at his door. It made sense, somehow. This time. I won't give ASP as much rope as she took with Christopher.

I like this Stephen kid, but like most 20 year olds about real life, he’s dumb as a post. This is going to be a real rude awakening once he learns there’s a zero percent chance of him leaving Russia with his kid unless she’s in tow, and it looks like Olga’s family has some dinero to get pregnancy pics done so looks like sonny boy might have to set up shop in mother Russia. Wonder how easy it is to get unemployment there. If they come back together, her family will be marking days down on her calendar for the big day once Olga is able to sponsor them to come on over to the land of milk and honey. kalanis dad, wow what a jerk. And she sets no boundaries with him, just letting him steamroll the Samoan deer in the headlights. And how unrealistic, this dude raised chickens and never lived in a house with walls and she expects him to know how to raise a child? I’d be surprised if he knew how to read coming from a background like that. Jesus, wasn’t there a Pauly shore movie like this? Clueless. Her father, it’s tragic, the only one bringing a world of hurt to this situation is him. This is the most effed up family as most of what’s going here is subtext. looking forward to Eric and dolt providing the comic relief tonite. Love to see a cat fight between norms mom and sugar mama. As for a Eric, the control freak sister and her brutally direct, unemotional assessments of leida are priceless. I’d love if they can separate the two and ask Leida what she thinks of her, I’d want to strangle her. What a suffocating environment, no wonder she has no idea who she is or what she wants to do. -

I can’t believe how clueless Ashley is -
Have there been any hints about what's happening with Sophie? I know Alexandra Breckenridge just had a baby, but she was made a series regular for season 2 if I recall correctly, so despite last night's episode, it would stand to reason that Kevin and Sophie aren't actually finished. I don't know where you'd take it from where they left things, though.

I agree, possibilities. I was more put off by Rebecca's reaction to Yvette than vice versa. Rebecca couldn't wait to get out of there and go back to where she felt safe. She came across as extremely cold and defensive. While it's entirely possible that she felt she was being criticized by Yvette, as you mentioned, there was nothing in either Yvette's words or tone to back that up. My only conclusion is that her reaction came not from the interaction itself but from her own insecurities and anxiety about how the world perceived her as Randall's mother. In my mind, Yvette really did nothing wrong. (Apropos of nothing, but I saw someone mention earlier in this thread that the actress who played Yvette is Sterling K. Brown's wife; what a stunning couple!) ShadowFacts, that's very true, and an even more simple explanation. :)

I don't think there has to be any complicated reason. Sometimes kids stop being friends, for a million different reasons. In the meantime, it's entirely possible that Rebecca and Yvette's friendship grew as Yvette was helping Rebecca (and Jack) learn to parent Randall. It might be as simple as Yvette becoming a family friend.

She's eleventy billion years (or 33 weeks) pregnant. (If you didn't catch it the multiple times it was mentioned, lol.)

Light in August by William Faulkner. It's early going but I have to admit, I'm struggling. And I've heard this is one of the most accessible of Faulkner's works. I hope it picks up soon.

Book Snark: Books that Disappointed for One Reason or Another
scatteroflight replied to AuntiePam's topic in Books
I finally got around to reading The Rosie Effect and I hated it. Any charm that The Rosie Project had completely evaporates in the second book. I never thought The Rosie Project was a literary masterpiece, but I found it entertaining and at times, humorous. In contrast, The Rosie Effect is just... depressing. Don's idiosyncrasies become more annoying than amusing, and I found Rosie just plain mean, selfish, and inconsiderate. The best thing that I can say about it is that it was a fast read, so at least it was over quickly. -
Well, that was anticlimactic. Just like the whole season, really.
