S09.E04: The Etiquette of Friendship
larapu2000 replied to OnceSane's topic in The Real Housewives Of New York City
I loved Tinsley's horror at the mellow makeup session following that shitstorm fight. If Sonja was invited to the shower and not the wedding, that's shitty etiquette, LUANN. -

Totally agree. And although it's not as creamy or sweet as the Dulce de Leche, have you tried their Passionfruit flavor? Only one grocery store in my area stocks that flavor, grrrrrr. -
Meh, I'll give everyone on this show a pass about not seeming to have any real friends. Their real friends have to agree to appear on camera, and if Shep, et al, are running with the wealthier, higher class set in Charleston, the volunteers are probably few and far between. Shep said he was going to a friend's wedding in Rhode Island, yet we've never seen that friend, so. Shep is clearly an intelligent, articulate man, and you're right that the show portrays him as a layabout playboy when viewer don't see his real interactions with friends, family, coworkers, colleagues, etc. Which is true for all reality shows, but unlike the Housewives, who essentially sign up their entire family for the camera, the cast of Southern Charm is under no obligation to share intimate family moments or drama. Which is kind of nice in some ways, but makes the cast, primarily Shep, lack a little more depth than we could be giving them credit for.

I loved Naomi talking shit about Craig with her parents in French and her mom basically telling her life facts about men sucking at organizing or following through. I love that Naomi is busy getting her MBA and managing her tasks and Craig is doing nothing and had 2 jobs-get a big banner and print off 4 pages. And he was almost 0 for 2. That conversation between Chelsea and Austen was so awkward I was embarrassed by myself. "Pick me up like a gentleman?" I guess, if you want him to know where you live, STRANGER DANGER, CHELSEA!!! Kathryn at the modeling agency KILLED me. "May I see your portfolio?" "I've prepared a PowerPoint presentation instead, here is my laptop."

Good god, do you take the entire bar exam in a handwritten Blue Book? Have the law authorities heard of computerized scoring yet? I got my GMAT scores back in 20 days! Did Craig say for sure if he took it in February? Also, COLONEL Gizmo???????? I love a man with a title.

She got into those circles because she's "hot." That's why cocktail waitresses at exclusive clubs around the world line up to wear skimpy outfits and uncomfortably high heels, in order to get "in" with the wealthy, well-heeled crowd. I'm not going to generalize or stereotype men, but if a woman is good looking enough, men will overlook the crazy, the tacky, the etc etc etc, in order to get the goods. Yeah, I'm only slightly ashamed to admit I watch Teen Mom. And when the moms AND dads on Teen Mom are decidedly better parents than you, you should just give up now. It's horrifying what those kids are going through, it's horrifying that it's playing out on TV. I would rather watch Amber and Matt suck face in lawn chairs in their garage in Indiana than watch these two interact with each other or watch as they neglect their children. And yes-I do think that keeping your children in a different home is neglect. Just because the home in question is well appointed doesn't make it any less disgusting what Thomas is doing. THIS. Considering that Naomie is getting an MBA in Finance, he's the one being dumb. (I have 2 business degrees and Finance is still mostly magic, fantasy, and urban legend to me)

Shep may have been a little overly mean to Craig, but dammit if I didn't love the part when Cameran chided him about several guys asking about Chelsea and Shep was all "I respect Chelsea and her choices and if her choice isn't me, then so be it." It was a refreshing bit of feminism in an episode where Cameran was shouting praise about Thomas and his parenting, which. Just. Ugh. Only slightly less upsetting was Thomas and Whitney discussing sex. Gizmo is the best thing ever to happen to this show.

Hollywood History: The Real-Life "Feud" and More

Count me in. I'm enjoying this discussion thread so much, keep these amazing stories coming! I've been keeping Wikipedia busy. -
I had the same reaction to the height difference. Reece basically buried her head in Shailene's chest. Shailene could have rested her chin comfortably on Reece's head. It gave their scene a more comical note than intended, I think. At least for me. But daaaaaammmmmnnn, how tall is Shailene?

I was going to point out this very thing. Jane is TRYING to find Ziggy's father by moving to the beach, which I thought made the coincidence plausible and sensical, but in the show, the randomness is just too much. One of the best bits in the book, in my opinion, is when Ed asks Madeline if she's really asking him to lie to the police about Bonnie. If she really wants him to compromise his integrity and character in a crime that he thought would be dismissed, for NATHAN. To me, it was such a subtly brilliant way to see how men view crimes against women, even the "good" guys like Ed. Not for Bonnie. Not for Bonnie and her family. Not for Abigail and the stepmother she clearly loves. But how he sees it as being for Nathan. I just really loved that part in the book, and I wish it had been included in the series. It's SO good.

In The Movies: Bette & Joan on the Big Screen
larapu2000 replied to Chaos Theory's topic in Feud [V]
When I was a kid, 3 movies absolutely creeped me out and terrified me: Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, The Watcher in the Woods, and The Dark Crystal. 2 of the 3 star Bette Davis, and I think that's why I've never seen her other movies, including All About Eve-which, I should be flogged for, because I've heard it's great, I started watching it once and fell asleep (but that's normal for me with a lot of older movies-I find there are a LOT of quiet spots and non-plot dialogue/action that slows the movie down and can lead to sleepy time very easily!). I'm a huge Hitchcock fan, so he's probably occupied most of my time that I could have spent with Joan and Bette! AND, BY THE WAY. It's a crime no one has yet mentioned the Watcher in the Woods. 1980's Disney movie. Bette Davis. A young Kyle Richards. A creepy plot involving a girl that went missing in the 60's when her friends had some weird seance. The main teenage character is beyond terrible at acting, but Bette Davis creeps.me.out. Do any of the streaming services like Netflix or Hulu have a good collection of Joan/Bette movies? This show has me kind of dying to see what I've missed! -

Same situation with Ted Bundy, and we all know how that turned out as well. -
I love Half Price Books, too, but haven't shopped there much since I got a Kindle, but your post reminded me that they always have a really great cookbook section! I am in serious lust with my Momfuku Milk Bar cookbook. The best part of the cookie recipes is that they tell you to scoop out the dough and then refrigerate at least a few hours or overnight, but once you scoop, you can freeze half or part of the batch. You definitely WANT to scoop first, not later-the dough is hard as a rock. This recipe may sound weird, but my dad said that it's his favorite cookie he's ever had. Cornflake Marshmallow Chocolate Chip Cookies This one is SO unique! Blueberries & Cream Cookies Some people might not like the recipes within recipes, but the cornflake crunch and milk crumb are tasty and crave-generating snacks, so believe me-they're WORTH IT. My next recipe from the book is going to either be the pistachio cake or the crack pie. I've heard the crack pie is the thing to get at Milk Bar.

I've made zucchini veggie tots and cauliflower veggie tots, and they're very good and very satisfying. I've eaten them with meat, or with another veg side or salad, but they were hearty enough to actually be a main, if you're looking to cut calories. I didn't know they had FROZEN riced cauliflower! I have seen it in the fresh section, and I don't care if it's $6 a bag and I'm only getting a half a head of cauliflower in there, it's totally worth it for the convenience because ricing cauliflower is a pain in the arse. I can't make brown rice to save my life, it always ends up really starchy (even if I rinse it!), so I buy the Minute Rice brown rice and I think it tastes pretty good. It takes 10 minutes, and I always make extra of that for other meals or freeze it. I had never eaten farro until about a year ago, and now I'm obsessed. It's so much better than quinoa, more flavor and texture. -
I love those citrus peel tools. It really does get down to business and makes peeling an orange 100 times easier. I often avoid buying oranges because they're such a pain, but between this thing and those easy peel Cuties, I'm back to obsessing over citrus. Citrus Peeler And hells to the yeah on the immersion blender. I've also used it whip small amounts of cream instead of getting the ol' stand mixer dirty.

I eat those cookies when I'm shitfaced drunk at a football tailgate and all of the other (good) food is gone. And I hate them AND myself for eating them.

Popeye's has the superior fast food fried chicken, but horrendous sides. I did try the KFC hot Nashville style chicken, and it was not as good as the real thing, but it was pretty damn good for fast food. So good that I've considered rampaging on my diet several times. Chipotle isn't bad calorie wise if you get the burrito bowl with no rice and with grilled chicken. The rice and tortillas have RIDICULOUS caloric counts. I'm not a burger person, but I liked the 5 Guys burger and the Cajun fries. They do give you a shitload of fries, though. I wasn't impressed with Tim Horton's. It was indistinguishable from Dunkin Donuts to me.

All Episodes Talk: French Country in Texas?
larapu2000 replied to yeswedo's topic in Fixer Upper [V]
I found it hilarious that Joanna for a minute actually thought a commercial kitchen could have exposed brick walls and ceiling beams. And then was disappointed that things like health code and sanitation were stripping the kitchen of all of the "interesting" details. I'm sure customers would prefer clean, safe, and legal to rustic and rusty. -

Sashimi was the only way I would eat sushi for a long time, as I really dislike the flavor of the nori wrapper. My favorite is hamachi and toro. If you liked regular tuna, I think you'd love these two raw! I made German buttercream for the first time this weekend, and I had never eaten it before, either. I think I might have met my soul mate. Deeeeeeeeeeeelicious. -
A delicious Dutch concoction of a cookie, where the cookies are made in a waffle press (think waffle cone imprint) or another decorative cookie iron, and then sandwiched together with a cinnamon flavored caramel. The caramel gets a little solid, so you place your stroopwafel atop your hot beverage of choice for a few minutes, and the heat/steam from the beverage soften the caramel to the perfect consistency. These are the brand United Airlines serves: (The only kind I've had, other than the homemade versions I've been trying to perfect) Stroopwafel!

I haven't seen a Rax in years, I think they're gone. If you're ever in the Missouri area, I've heard that Lion's Choice is a good roast beef regional chain. Lots of folks there prefer them to Arby's. Ugh, I think Hardee's is the grossest fast food menu ever created. Take all the gross things you can do with food, and that's what Hardee's puts on their menu.

Their wrap sucks. They give you the dressing on the side, so you either have to awkwardly dip the wrap and all the stuff falls out, or unroll the wrap and add the sauce and somehow get it to go back the same way (it never does), or just pour it on a bite at a time. Edited to add: Lisin, how do you work the wrap? Do you add the sauce? It's so frustrating! I love a wrap. They have breakfast chicken & biscuit sandwiches at my airport Chick-Fil-A, and they're pretty tasty.
-
Sonic does have great ice, but I might be from an area where almost every joint (other than chains) have the tiny balls of ice like them, so they're not particularly special in my neck of the woods. They're popular at many local ice cream and burger stands in Indiana. My mom always says Chick-fil-A's ice cream tastes like her grandma's homemade ice cream.

Nooooooooo, cherry Limeades are the best! Their burgers are decent, but I only go there when I want tater tots. You eat them all the time as a kid, but as an adult, it just feels like such a treat and indulgence.
