Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads
Tom Holmberg replied to Lola16's topic in Commercials
Warning: I saw a new (at least to me) Shaq ad, with him singing in the shower. I don't need to see that. -
I always like Tommy Kirk as an kid actor, but I hope this doesn't mean TCM will be rerunning "Catalina Caper" again.
-
I don't know if its my imagination but George seems to have a beer in his hand more often in Season One than in later seasons.
-
Actually I was happy it was prehistoric animals (dire wolves, sabre tooth tigers, etc.) rather than dinosaurs. We already have "Jurassic Park."
-
I'm more of a "Hardrock, Coco, and Joe" guy, but I did like the Norelco sleighride. Also for announcing summer I associate the Hamm's bear beer ads. "From the land of sky-blue waters, from the land of pines..."
-
I'm sure they'll expand on Psychic Dad (as well as expanding on every other characters' subplot), but really why do they need a government conspiracy subplot, a bad cop subplot, a drug-dealers subplot and all the rest? Isn't people wandering around prehistoric Calif. of enough interest? I'd assume that's what most people tuned in for. They just seemed to have packed way too much plot into the show.

The CGI animals were really bad. The subplot about the father having had dreams of the place before the event seems both a bad plot device and not really necessary. I might try episode 2, though.

"One Step Beyond" was an early anthology show (started in 1959) dealing with the "paranormal". The shows were presented as docudramas of reputedly true events. It ran for 3 seasons. Probably dated today, but was an early "scifi" entry. -
Hopefully there won't be polar bears.

I've noticed a lot of perfume and cologne ads lately for both men and women. Usually these show up around gift-giving holidays, and Mother's Day and Father's Day. I wonder what's up? Are they doing such bad business they decided they need to run ads all year now? (In my view these are the second worst types of ads, following Medicare ads of course.) -

One wiped it too soft, one wiped it too hard and one wiped it just right. -

Must be his other left (as they say in basic training). The scene with the doctor inspecting his socks is the same in both, I think. But he's going around the table on the other side in the one where he's reading. -
The author's life was rather noir also.

I thought this is his right foot -
I read the original book back in the 1980s. It was very noir.

Someone mentioned that the Dr.'s no much of a doctor because he's examining the man's foot with his sock still on. But in the version where the Dr. asks, "Read any good books lately?" he's even examining the wrong foot. -

Whit Bissell was everywhere during that era. IMDB shows 323 credits. It seemed he often had roles that are just "Judge", "General", "Minister", "Doctor", etc., with no name. -
A good book, but seems like its kind of forgotten. It was very popular in the 60s, but don't hear it mentioned much today, unfortunately.

For food novels, an interesting classic on the subject is Zola's "The Belly of Paris" (Oxford Classics has a decent translation. Translations of the title may vary). Set in the Parisian food market, Les Halles., it has a lot about how Paris was fed in the 19th Century. I'd compare it to Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle."

I noticed that Beaver Cleaver (Jerry Mathers) is now doing an ad for one of those foot vibrating machines. I thought he died in Vietnam. (Just kidding.) -

Is that what smells so good? -
Might be interested in this forthcoming book: These Great Athenians by Valentine Carter "Carter’s fierce debut gives voice to the mostly forgotten and maligned female characters of Homer’s epic The Odyssey. It is a celebratory ode to those who survive within and outside of gender norms." https://www.amazon.com/These-Great-Athenians-Valentine-Carter/dp/191434300X

Shaq has a cookbook coming out in Feb. 2022, so that explains why he couldn't do those ads too. Just too busy. We'll get a lot of Papa Johns, Burger King and Frosted Flakes recipes -

Well, Shaq can't be in EVERY ad. There's only so many hours in a day. -

Saw one of the stupidest ads in a while, for the blue or the yellow pill. The product doesn't even have a name they just say the blue or yellow pill. supposed to be a OTC Viagra or Cialis substitute for $3 a pill. Bet that works. Which one you choose is like picking the red pill or the blue pill in "Matrix."
