  1. Despite the improbability of the show, I agree it is top-notch. They had a lot of very good character actors, who they frequently reused in different roles. Personally I have a soft spot for half-hour dramas, the writing seems to be tighter.
  2. But apparently Victoria was nor amused.
  3. "Putney Swope" was only his second acting job (in movies or TV). On "MASH" he memorably played army psychiatrist Sidney Freedman.
  4. Enjoyed watching the 2 episodes of "WKRP in Cincinnati" on METV on Sunday, even though the "Rip Tide" episodes weren't my favorite. They did show that "WKRP" was on METV in 2017. They could bring it back- maybe cut some "Brady Bunch" timeslots.
  5. I liked the interaction of the characters, but another episode without any actual travel in it (except for the lifeboat scene).
  6. Even worse than Spinal Tap's "Smell the Glove" cover.

    Book News

Way back in 1980, there was a controversy over a sex education book "Show Me", which included arty photos of naked children, teens and adults (it was originally published in Europe where this sort of thing isn't so controversial) at a local library. Our library had a copy of it, which until the controversy and news stories, didn't circ that much. Suddenly all the people who were outraged were putting the book on reserve. They would "claims return" or rip out pages or not return it to get it off our shelves. But because there were still holds on it, we had to keep ordering new copies, which meant more money for the publisher.

It's interesting in all these stories none of these people are presenting a list of 500 books they think kids should read (obviously they don't know of any books, not having read any).
  9. I just wish one of them would say, "I called to get them to stop running their ads."
  10. Should have also mentioned "Black Books" as another favorite.
  11. I'm pretty much opposed to dress codes because they are usually totally random (no culottes? Really? What's the deal?) and discriminatory. In HS we couldn't wear sandals, so I took an old pair of penny loafers and cut them up so they were pretty much open on the top and sides (but we still had to wear socks). And no shorts, even though that was pre-airconditioning in schools.

And they all generally disappear after the election.

This whole issue really has nothing to do with the books, its creating a "moral panic" prior to the 2023 elections to use the "culture wars" to get right-wing voters out and elect right-wing candidates. Prior to every election some such issue is created, be it gay marriage, immigrant caravans, Hugo Chavez, frivolous lawsuits, cancel culture, Dr. Seuss or "dirty books."
  14. Same rules in the Chicago suburban HS in the 1960s. Also they made girls kneel in the hallway and their skirts had to reach the floor. No culottes. Boys hair couldn't touch their collars. Boys could only wear collared shirts.
  15. "The Simpsons" had an episode where Marge beats up a mugger in a parody of this scene.
  16. I saw it in SF soon after it opened, in the late 1980s (i believe) I saw it in Chicago with Laszlo Kovacs talking about making it. I think it still holds up.
  17. I would assume the Central Pacific/Union Pacific, eventually to NYC.
  18. I always thought the adults insulting Kimmy Gibbler in front of the other kids as basically evil.
  19. I can't wait until the ad with Martha and Shaq comes out.
  20. I thought it was a better episode than last weeks, but still hardly any actual traveling. I assume the US leg will have more traveling, but they already used up the Bridge plot and the burning the train cars plot which occurred in the US section of the book.
  21. RIP, Howard Hesseman https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/howard-hesse-man-dead-wkrp-in-cincinnati-police-academy-1235167152/
  22. Blood transfusions featured in the original novel of "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. which came out in 1897. So fictionally its possible (if not in reality).
  23. Moral panic over D&D was a thing back then. If you remember Mary said Pastor Jeff had warned about D&D in church and he said he'd gone to an anti-D&D program at a pastors conference.
  24. I agree. I can see how its audience at the time could think it was "groovy" and "radical." But now i would wish it had been more insightful and incisive. That said, the idea is a good one and a good series could be made out of it. A sort of Black "Mad Men."
