  1. Marty Rathbun is who you are thinking about. I don't know if he is high enough yet in the organization after coming back to actually take the reigns should Miss Cabbage have a grabber or some other thing befall him.
  2. At Christmas time, SeaOrg members are hit up for $$$ to purchase a gift for Miss Cabbage. Don't know about public Scientologists. It seems most Scientologists treat Christmas as a secular holiday and not as Christianity does - a celebration of the birth of Jesus. After reading a bunch of memoirs penned by former members, no one ever mentions anything about doing anything for Easter. Here is an article from the Scientology Money Project site about how one can't be both Christian and a Scientologist.
  3. Jenna Miscavige Hill, David's niece, talks about this in her book. She said that Sea Org members are very restricted in what devices they can own and can access. At one point, higher ups came around and swept away everyone's cell phones if they had one. She refused to give hers up, but it was a simple flip phone with no Internet access. Also, while Scientology bases had computers, the computers were heavily filtered to exclude anti-Scientology information. It was when Jenna and her husband were sent on mission to Australia that they acquired or gained access to an unfiltered computer and they found the Operation: Clambake website, which really accelerated their leaving the church. Ron Miscavige, Sr. has said that he found stuff after David gave him a Kindle (e-reader, not a Fire) that had a rudimentary web browser on it and Internet access but no Scientology filter as you can't install that kind of software on a Kindle e-reader. So, there are ways, but it usually happens when the dark eye of Sauron is looking elsewhere and isn't focused on you or what you are doing.
  4. That would be like asking the Roman Catholic Church's College of Cardinals to beat the shit out of the Pope. Not gonna happen, and Miss Cabbage has bodyguards (ie. his Swiss Guard) to protect him.
  5. Since it doesn't cross state lines, it isn't a Federal issue. I believe that it would fall under the Federal Kidnapping Act. Now, if they were to move her from California to Florida, then the FBI could get involved.
  6. My grandfather was a trained pastry chef. All his original recipes are measured by weight in metric, especially for dry ingredients. Far better in replicating results and maintaining consistency from batch to batch.
  7. I remember being a teen out in the driveway one summer washing my car at my parent's house as I was in college and still lived with them. A couple of JWs came by and I only noticed when they were right on top of me. They gave me one of their tracts and I told them I was too busy to talk and had to go inside for something. They left. When I looked at the tract, I noticed that it mixed verses from Old Testament scripture with verses from New Testament scriptures, or vice-versa, or one book of the Bible with another book of the Bible, to attain the meaning and interpretation they wanted to convey. It reminded me of what my freshmen year (Roman Catholic high school) religion teacher told us that just because something appears in the Bible doesn't mean what has been interpreted is in context, and context means a lot. The example he gave - which was a wild exaggeration, but drives home the point - was that someone could say that "you shouldn't 'dance on your roof while wearing a red hat on Sunday'" because while all the words are in the Bible, they are taken way out of context. My parents told me that for several years after, and even after I moved out after college, those same JWs would stop by to see if I was home to talk to me.
  8. My wife watches this show - well, used to watch. I saw the news about the winner, and honestly don't know who he was, and came here to check it out to warn my wife she may want to not watch the finale (she DVRs the show and then catches up with it later usually when I'm not around). I looked at our DVR through the app on my phone and didn't see the episode. Turns out, she cancelled the series recording earlier in the season because BB kept winning over who she thought were more worthy dancers. First time she's ever done this with DWTS.
  9. Listened to Leah's book a couple months ago. What a treat! Love that she was the one that read it. Just finished listening to Ruthless. I found it interesting but Ron had a tendency to jump around a lot and rehash points that he had covered in previous chapters. Also found it interesting that he doesn't really blame LRH for the issues in Scamatology, but puts more of the blame on David. I'm now listening to Beyond Belief. I think that listening to Ruthless first is beneficial as many of the people in the Miscavaige family she refers to you have a better understanding about if you listen to Ron's book first. The version I'm listening to is not read by Jenna. I'm only into chapter 2, so I don't have an opinion either way on it yet. I got it through Hoopla at my public library and something seems to be off with the recording as it sounds very tinny. Don't know if it is just this version or if it affects the book on CD too. If you haven't read it, I strongly encourage you to read Bare-Faced Messiah by Russell Miller. It came out in 1987 in the UK. It is the thoroughly researched biography of LRH. Scamatology was able to quash publication of the book in the United States in 1988 after a bunch of copies had already been published and shipped (only 14,000 copies made it into the wild) but as this was the beginning of the Internet, a copy was put online and quickly proliferated. That is how I read the book in the mid-90s. Here it is as a PDF.
  10. Just saw a commercial for this episode on A&E tonight. Airs tomorrow, 11/18.
  11. The library I work at is in a Chicago suburb, and a couple of months ago we had the local JW Kingdom Hall Elder ask if it was ok to have two people stand outside the library all day on Wednesdays (9-5) with their information. Wonder if they realize their going door-to-door isn't working anymore and they are exploring other avenues of marketing? I'm surprised the show didn't get into the quotas that are imposed. They used to be hard numbers, but were rescinded. However, people who have left the organization claim that "silent" quotas remain - there is an unwritten monthly quota to hit (hours spent knocking on doors and proselytizing) in order to remain in the good graces of the organization. Don't hit your quota a couple of times and you could be disfellowshipped. I also wonder if by posting people at public locations that allows their members to hit their "quotas" for the month?
  12. I work at a public library and we have a regular patron who is a JW. He regularly reads the newspaper and comes to the desk with copies of the articles regarding natural disasters, economic calamity, etc. and says that all this portends of the end times. Yet he frequently asks me to look up various stocks to see how they are doing. Probably because the end of the world is nigh and he needs to make sure his portfolio survives Armageddon.
  13. I have a remote digital thermometer with two probes. When I do a stuffed turkey, one probe goes into the thigh and the other goes into the stuffing. I can set the temp target for each probe independently. Once I hit around 180 on the thigh and 165 on the stuffing, I can take the bird out. With carryover, temps will go up another five to ten degrees. Haven't had an issue doing this way.
  14. Hollywood Reporter article about the JW special and that the new season of Aftermath will be eight episodes and four specials.
  15. 100% agree with you here. The show would still have plenty of footage even if they "lost" all the marijuana busts.
  16. Brooke Shields also did a multi-episode guest stint on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit last season. The story arc was cringe inducing, and not just for her acting, but the entire plot.
  17. According to a post from Thursday on Tony Ortega's site, the show is returning August 15. However, IMDB doesn't have an airing date for the first episode of season 3.
  18. Just rereading this thread about this episode and your comment jogged my memory of reading this a few months ago on Tony Ortega's site.
  19. I don't know where else to ask this, but since we are talking about the singles, has anyone heard Maddie's song get any airtime? I regularly listen to 101.9 the Mix in Chicago and I haven't heard it. When Phillip Phillips won, his song was all over the place. He's the last winner I can remember getting significant airplay of his winning single (and that was before it was used in the Olympics that year).
  20. Went to the concert when Phillip Phillips won in 2012. Venue was the All State Arena in Rosemont, IL. Venue had seats for over 8,300 people and they had an 88% sell rate. That year they were performing in venues that had seats for between 4,000 and 9,000 people. Attendance really fell off the following year, and for the 2014 and 2015 tours they were only playing in venues with between 1,000 and 3,000 seats and not even selling out those. This year, the Chicago area venue is the Rosemont Theater. The venue has seats for 4,400 people. Compared to when I went in 2012, tickets then were $25 - balcony, front row overlooking the stage. Similar seats at the Rosemont Theater are $27.50 for this year's concert (most expensive ticket is $273).
  21. 0.7 rating/3 share, 3.1 million viewers for Tuesday. Previous week, which was FTP, 0.5 rating/2 share 2.04 million viewers. So, Deception did improve over FTP.
  22. I want to see Nic go full on Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke on Lane. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
  23. I believe Mike Rinder posted on his blog how Scamatology paid a Los Angeles PBS station for its old, run down production studio. The station made $45 million and kept its FCC license, while all Scamatology got was a run down production studio that needed significant upgrades. Because Scamatology bought a satellite channel, they don't need to get an FCC license. However, if they decided they wanted to set up their own full-cable channel or over-the-air broadcast channel, they would need to get an FCC license as the FCC has oversight powers on those types of signals.
