I also never read Goodnight Moon to my son who was born in 1972. In fact, never heard of it till a few years ago. Read him alot of other stories though. They certainly did a back slide on what they wanted to keep from the original condition of the house. Ripping out the original floors and putting in those ugly new ones along with the new wrought iron balusters on the steps was a crime along with using termite damage damage as an excuse. Really - they are in the reno business and didn't have the house inspected before they moved in. Also thought that the wallpaper in downstairs bathroom didn't look art deco to me.
