  1. Had a lazy day today, so I made ummmm..... "Mexitalruvian Pilaf" (I think I just made up the name). Shredded grilled chicken, quinoa, spinach (I used frozen tonight), a bit of shredded Asiago and Romano cheeses and black bean salsa tossed together and topped with a bit of guacamole.
  2. Thanks, @Athena! @romanticidiot, in North America, East Asian/Asian refers to Chinese/Japanese/Korean while Southeast Asian = Thai Filipino, etc... Indians/Sri Lankans/Pakistani/etc... are South Asian. I don't know about the US, but in Canada, South Asians have a separate check box in the census. For some reason, they're all grouped into one while East Asians are furthur subcategorized (e.g. I might check off "Chinese" in the forms rather than just Asian/East Asian).
  3. Instead of wadder (which is how most people in the US and Canada seem to pronounce "water"). Did they make him say to-MAH-toe instead of to-MAY-toe (or rather, tuh-MAY-do)?
  4. Never occurred to me. I *HAVE* heard of "East Asian women don't shave their legs" comments though. It's because we're (stereotypically) less hairy than other races. I shave my legs once a month, but that's only because I killed most of my hair follicles when I was a teenager by using depilatory creams.
  5. Ugh....I hate shopping on weekends for the same reason. I'm not a fan of Mondays, either - I feel like my local supermarket doesn't do the restocking until Monday night so it's just as out of stuff on Monday as it is Sunday afternoon.
  6. Every woman has to "go through" something with her hair. Those of us with poker straight, very fine hair (like yours truly), often can't hold waves/curls without loads and loads of product. It makes hair feel really gross! I have to get my hair curled really tightly a few hours before an event just so it could look wavy later. The waves tend to stay on longer, though.
  7. Nope. Is this a "scratch" recipe or from a gluten-free mix (I would prefer the former...mixes are full of weirdness). Thanks! :)
  8. Anyone watching Growing America? My husband, who is an MBA grad and in marketing is watching it with me. We like it and we criticize some of the businesses the students are working with. For example, one of the businesses featured was a small restaurant in Arkansas featuring local fare. We both were really shocked that the owners, who are young, didn't think to update their website, which looked like it was from circa 2005 at the latest (it was pretty much on the top of the improvement list for the MBA students). Seriously, if you want people to visit, you need to have a fairly decent site - unless your target are people who don't go online much (Toronto area Chinese restaurants, I'm looking at you!!).
  9. The Geico ads with the pig really annoy me. Seriously, do they have to over-do those pig jokes (pigs in a blanket, when pigs fly, etc...)??
  10. I agree with re: Italian. It has to be more "authentic." As for Chinese food, it's next to impossible to find egg rolls in Toronto these days, probably because they're butchered, North American versions of spring rolls. Most of the North Americanized Chinese places are long gone and have been replaced by authentic Hong Kong restaurants, thanks to immigration. OK, I lied. You can readily find "egg rolls" in Toronto, but it's not what non-Chinese people think of as egg rolls. To an average Hong Konger or Hong Kong-Canadian, "egg rolls" are cookies - think cannoli without filling. Wikipedia calls them biscuit rolls.
  11. This is a quinoa stuffing I made for Thanksgiving a few years ago. Now that I don't buy the pie and make my own dessert (this year, I switched from baked to slow cooked. Same ingredients, but just replaced the baking with the slow cooker (it's four hours on low if you wanted to know) so it will free up the oven for more dishes), I've replaced the apples and bell peppers with sun dried tomatoes and green onions. I'm all about twisting classics!
  12. What's with kids over, say, 6 or 7, especially BOYS, not holding spoons correctly? The kid in this Quaker ad fists his spoon. He is too old to do that. Casualization of society or what? What's worse is when I see teenage boys and GROWN MEN do the same. I don't see this too often with females.
  13. A gelato place near me has closed for the season. Funny thing is, they never really branded themselves as a gelato place when they first opened, but a cafe! So I was totally WTF when I saw a sign saying that they're "closed for the season."
  14. Try chickpea flour! It makes pretty good "bread." Apples work too. Also, quinoa (not everyone considers it a "grain").
  15. Made my version of tofu Parmesan last night - a good alternative to eggplant parm if you want something vegetarian. Served it with quinoa.
  16. Maybe it's because I haven't seen too many episodes, but I was under the impression that Pops was a widower until last night's episode.
  17. Hello, my name is PRgal and I'm a Sephoraholic. I've been a VIB Rouge member since its launch. I am also a lipstick/lipgloss hoarder and have been, on and off, since high school. My favourite products are Fresh's Sugar (especially honey (both the gloss and balm), berry and petal), Clinique's Chubby Sticks (eyes and lips) and Smashbox's CC creams and primers. I mostly buy beauty products at Sephora or at Shoppers Drug Mart (love the fact that they don't just carry traditional "drugstore" brands like Maybelline and Covergirl. I can buy my toilet paper and vitamin pills along with Benefit mascara) because I get points! :) Anyone else a Sephoraholic?
  18. I have not stepped inside a McDonald's in about two years and have not had a burger there in almost five (the last time I ate at McDonald's was for breakfast). I have to admit that their coffee is good now that they're doing espresso. The last time I ate at Burger King was in 2006. I tend to get my burgers at places like Big Smoke (quick service, but not fast food) these days. In terms of actual fast food, I like Subway and a bunch of smaller pita/wrap places but prefer salad/healthier choices outlets like Freshii for lunch.
  19. Yum! Steamed flounder was one of the only kinds of fish I would eat when I was very young. As for what I'm making tonight: Socca (chickpea flour flatbread) with leftover Chinese style BBQ pork and onions. Cheated and purchased prepped side dishes (broccolini and beets).
  20. I use the elliptical four times a week for about 50 minutes, take (ballet) barre once a week and work with a trainer another day. I also take hour-long walks almost daily and try to eat well. I've found that over the past few years, I've become a slightly intolerant to starchier foods such as potatoes, rice and most breads so I tend to only include them in two meals each day.
  21. Aren't most black people in the UK mostly first and second generation British by way of former colonies in the Caribbean? Most of the black people I know here in Toronto are the same and they tend to have names like Katherine, John and Michael. Interesting that even fourth generation UK Indians carry on traditional names while Chinese rarely do.
  22. Reservations. It's Friday and I don't feel like cooking. :P
  23. A few years ago, I made spelt rolls for Thanksgiving that came out as hard as rocks. It was the same recipe I used for soda bread a few weeks before, but for some reason, it didn't turn out. Maybe it's because I put them in muffin cups instead of making an entire loaf. Probably spent a little too long in the oven.
  24. There's a difference between a name like Rainbow and a name that is representative of non-Anglo cultures. I'm sure people would take a Dr. Mei Tsin Wang more seriously than a Rainbow Johnson. Rainbow/Bow screams (as I've said earlier in this thread) "how high were your parents when you were born, anyway?"
