  1. I'm still waiting for an ice dancing team to do an exhibition piece using "The Twizzle" since there's now a move by that name. Jerry Lanning also did an episode of "The Lucy Show" and "The Donna Reed Show" along with his mother who was a nightclub singer. His brothers were also in "The Donna Reed Show" with them. And actually, the career transition that his "Dick Van Dyke Show" character made was pretty typical for the times. A young singer would start out making records that appealed mostly to teens and then would transition over to supper clubs, movies and/or theater. Incidentally, for "Law and Order: SVU" fans, Jerry Lanning starred in an early episode as a prominent conservative whose gay son is murdered.
  2. Imelda Staunton is married to Jim Carter who plays Mr. Carson. Judi Dench has expressed a desire to be in the show. I could see both of them on the show at some time.
  3. I think at the very least, Rosamund went through a very similar situation as Edith.
  4. I don't think it was so much wanting to travel. Ivy had spoken several times last season of wanting to be more daring and I think the idea of a completely new country appealed to her in that way. When she heard Daisy turn the job down, I think she knew this was her chance and she grabbed it.
  5. Given the recent passing of the legendary Ruby Dee, I will add "A Raisin in the Sun" as one of the movies I watch over and over again.
  6. I loved reading about the food too especially the blackbird that was fried in its own fat. There's a book called "The Country Kitchen" which was written in the 1930's by a woman who would have been a contemporary of Laura Ingalls Wilder and she has a lot of recipes mixed in with her anecdotes too. The scene I always remember in the LHOTP books is the one where they get their Christmas presents. I think they each get a drinking mug, a penny, and a stick of candy. Can you imagine modern kids being satisfied with that? Heck, I don't think kids of my generation would have been.
  7. Jason Isaacs was the sexiest Captain Hook ever, but Cyril Ritchard owns the role. His performance would probably be a bit campy for modern tastes though. I know in the books, Peter is supposed to be a prepubescent boy who thinks all girls are yucky except for Mommy, but I'm guessing in this version he'll be a teenager.
  8. I love Donald Bogle's books. I've read several of them, but I haven't read the one on African-Americans in TV.
  9. No, "Made in Heaven." It was about a guy (Timothy Hutton) who drowns while saving a mother and her children and goes to Heaven. In this version of Heaven, people still have their human emotions and can fall in love which he does with his guide who is played by Kelly McGillis. Then they learn that because she is a "new soul" who has never been born, she has to go to earth to be born as a human. In this version of Heaven, they do a kind of reverse reincarnation where what you do there informs on what will happen to you on Earth. Anyway, he convinces TPTB to let him be reborn in the same country and the same time as her and they agree. However, neither one will remember the other and they only have 30 years to meet and fall in love again. I saw the movie once in a theater so I'm fuzzy on the details so I had to check Wikipedia and IMDB but I remembered it was quite similar to DDD.
  10. But it's never been a revolving theme. The only two people who have also pushed the button are the original owner of Jane's body and Grayson who is/was Jane/Deb's fiance and the love of her life/soulmate. Does anyone remember a movie from the 1980's called "Made in Heaven?"
  11. Julian Fellowes has already said he will not kill off the Dowager Countess. If Maggie Smith decides she's had enough, Violet will just leave and maybe go to the seashore or something for her health.
  12. Regarding A Child is Born, they showed the Pre-Code version of that movie earlier yesterday morning. It's called Life Begins and starred Loretta Young.
  13. Maybe he and Stacy will name the twins "Buffy and Jody."
  14. As handsome as Grayson is, I've always found him to be dull and uninteresting.
  15. "Oh the Wells Fargo wagon is a -comin down the street..." Another movie I can watch over and over again is "The Secret of Roan Innish." It's about a young Irish girl right after World War II who goes to live with her grandparents in the country and discovers the family legend and how it affects the disappearance of her baby brother.
  16. Fred is not a human being and he's no longer a guardian angel. There is no reason for him to go back to earth. Remember Stacy doesn't remember him, much less that they were in any kind of relationship. And I imagine breaking up her engagement to Owen just so he could get her back himself would not go over well in Heaven. I never cared about the whole Jane/Grayson thing because I find him dull and uninteresting. I'm much more interested in what's going to happen with the other characters on the show. I would love to see Parker come back and explain himself.
  17. I'm watching a movie I DVR'ed over the weekend that I used to watch a lot as a kid but that I hadn't seen in many years: "Room For One More." It's based on a true story about a couple (Cary Grant and Betsy Drake) with three children who adopt three other children who because of circumstances are considered hard to place. It's one of those movies that's not really a guilty pleasure but it's also not a movie I think everyone needs to see because it's so astonishing, etc. It's just a nice movie to watch. I'm not sure, but I believe Ms. Drake and Mr. Grant were married when they made this movie.
  18. I actually saw "The Opposite Sex" years before I ever saw "The Women." I read "The Women" a year or so after I saw TOS and I kept thinking that the plot of the play seemed really familiar. Then I realized what it was and I started looking out for the movie of "The Women." Speaking of Joan Lorring, I loved "The Corn is Green."
  19. I think it might be confusing since PBS has the "Downton Abbey" Christmas special as its season finale but the "Call the Midwife" Christmas special seems to be a standalone episode on PBS.
  20. Yes, that will be the Season 3 Christmas special.
  21. She also played the Maharani of Ranchipur in "The Rains Came." She was also a dancing teacher in "The Unfinished Dance." I've never seen it but apparently she's most famous for her role as a gypsy in "The Wolf Man."
  22. I imagine they will since they did show the Christmas specials for Seasons 1 and 2.
  23. I love Dodsworth, Ruth Chatterton was pretty much a veteran actress at this time and she had a couple of Oscar nominations including one for playing the title role in "Madame X." I thought Maria Ouspenskaya stole the movie even though she was only in one scene. I think Fran was supposed to represent women who spent all their lives in small American towns and who wanted more out of life but weren't really equipped to be anything other than what they were. Not just in terms of being able to support yourself but being able to be alone and not have a man to rely on for financial and/or emotional support.
  24. I remember Billy Clyde and I haven't watched "All My Children" for many years. RIP Matthew Cowles.
  25. I think Caleb and Jena were leading the competition from very early on with Alex a somewhat distant 3rd. I was surprised that Caleb won because I thought Jena was probably a little ahead of him in terms of popularity.
