  1. Just did a quick search, there is capital punishment in Korea. Not sure if his acts would get him executed but maybe that's what keeps him in that basement. I'm sure he ends up trapped there for the symbolism, at least in part. The previous housekeeper and her husband, when she goes down there, she gives him a baby bottle and he sucks whatever liquid is in there through the nipple. Of course if she brought a standard container, there wouldn't be the same symbolism. When he taps out the morse code with his forehead, he ends up bloodied before he attacks the garden party. I wonder if the blood patterns on his face and forehead, which makes him look scary, is part of some Korean folklore imagery. The Parks said there might be a ghost or the young kid thought he saw a ghost, which was likely that old man. Mrs. Park also referenced setting up the garden party tables in the lawn in some kind of pattern, as if the teepee as a Japanese warship and the tables are Korean ships surrounding it. Again, maybe a cultural thing but it doesn't seem like it would be a woman referencing some military history. Then of course "Jessica" spouted a lot of psychobabble as part of her grift, even claimed there was some structure to the childish drawings by the kid. Curious how that went over in Korea, the Parks are presumably well-educated but they're repeatedly gaslit or fooled by uneducated -- but streetsmart? -- grifters. I would presume academic and professional achievement are highly valued so to have what should be "superior" people have the wool pulled over their eyes may be controversial to an extent in that society.
  2. I don't know if it's the case in Korea but in HK, adopting English first names seemed to be fashionable, at least for a time. For instance, Bruce Lee took his English name but didn't speak English. Same with director John Woo. Mrs. Park peppered in English phrases and words in her conversations so maybe it's trendy with a certain class.
  3. I really wonder if that's typical. I don't know about Korea but in other Asian nations like HK and Singapore, the domestic help come from poorer nations like Indonesia and the Philipines. I don't think the foreigners are treated as well. If not overtly abusive, they certainly aren't that friendly to the hired help. Only other film of Bong that I've seen is Snowpiercer, where of course you had the overt class structure but it was more allegorical, not meant to depict some real society in literal terms. The Kims don't seem to be experienced grifters, except for Jessica. Kevin was at first reluctant to take over the job of his friend. Of course as soon as he saw an opportunity to get Jessica in, he jumped at it. It certainly didn't seem like there was a specific plan to get the whole family in on it. Jessica was the one who seems to be able to adjust on the fly, as she said she ad-libbed most of it. Did she plan to plant her panties in the car or was she ad-libbing? How well do they know how rich the Parks are or do they just assume they're able to hire all 4 of them? Park seemed to own a tech company. You'd think he'd have security people who would professionally vet them. In fact I wonder if domestic help is mostly contracted through companies, like the fake one they made up. So Mrs. Park hired the first 3 just on networking but the last one was through the fake company. It might be more realistic that they'd already know about companies which provide domestic help, especially from their friends. I'm going to check out those links posted in the thread to learn about their class structure, how much of a big deal inequality is.
  4. She did ask to see his penis, which she said was like a third leg according to legend. A large penis leads to a woman making a major decision regarding her life/career. Good message.
  5. There might not be 30 TEs drafted but there may be almost that many signed in a given year. Many college players get signed as unsigned free agents or UDFAs and some of them do make teams or at least the practice squad. Corey and Zach also had football aspirations. Zach vs. Fessy could be quite a match in Hall Battle. Though if they're not weight training constantly, they lose muscle mass and maybe Zach doesn't want to lay out his body. In many of the Hall Battles, they're not trying to truck or run into then opponent at full speed, unless they have a big weigh advantage. Even then, most people aren't conditioned to running full speed into a mass, which would be at least 180 pounds.
  6. Cara Maria won against Zach I believe when the final stretch of the Final involved solving a puzzle. But I can't recall if at some point they were in pairs and then broke up into individuals for the final stage. They were running back and forth in some castle-like building, memorizing the key and then running to where the puzzle was.
  7. Netflix has announced it's bringing Borgen back for a fourth season in 2022 https://www.vulture.com/2020/04/borgen-season-4-netflix.html Third season aired in 2013 so it will be almost 10 years! Birgitte Nyborg was in a few episodes of Westworld on HBO. I'm going to try to rewatch. Chose to watch Borgen back in the day and never got started on House of Cards, which Borgen is often compared to.
  8. Finished the series, really enjoyed it, wouldn't mind seeing more. Kind of a bittersweet ending for Henrik and Martin is presumably rotting away in prison, though I recall reading that Kim Bodnia showed no interest in continuing the series and now he's found greater fame on Killing Eve. Sofia Helin alluded to playing Saga again when she's in her 50s. She's around 48. I guess it's difficult to keep coming up with multiple seasons to involve both characters and have season-long plots involving ritualized murders, with several plots coming together. Well Borgen is reported doing another season in 2022, after it last aired in 2013, so 9 years later! So maybe there will be interest. The spinoffs like The Tunnel and the US Bridge exhausted themselves. But there's an explosion of crime dramas across the world so the demand for them seems very high.
  9. How do you know they saved money? I thought Austen's salary was relatively low. Kathryn has to be one of the highest-paid on the cast but she doesn't seem like she'd be good with money. We know that $6000 a month house that one season was for show but what is her housing situation? If she likes to live in the pricey part of Charleston, she may be burning money at a good pace, unless child support from Thomas covers a lot of her bills.
  10. Chloe lives in Denver, supposedly comes in only to film. Other cast members spend most of their time elsewhere. As has been noted, Sarasota/Siesta Key tend to have a lot of older people and attract more affluent but older visitors.
  11. New episode! In Lisbon! Couple had smiles throughout. First apt. was obviously the only choice for them, even at the highest price, given location and value — furnished, most roomy, nicest finishes. Maybe they were smiling at the charade that they’d consider the other apts. Marta the realtor has been on other episodes. Not too chatty but would be good to see more in Portugal, such as in Porto.
  12. Well Aneesa says she just wants to be given a chance to run the final and prove her worth at least. However, look at how she performed in the challenge in this episode, all the way at the back, unable to keep up with others. They touted how she's a great competitor who's won so many eliminations. She's bigger and stronger than most of the women so she wins in these physical eliminations or people avoid putting her in early in case they get something like Hall Battle. That would be part of the reason she usually lasts long but not long enough. I can't tell how many people were left but there was still around a dozen. Can they have more than 8? Maybe if it's a two-stage thing where you get 4 or 5 pairs and only the top 4 make it to the second stage.
  13. Prague has beautiful tourist attractions, with historic buildings which go back several centuries. This bunker doesn't seem like it's near Prague city center. Seems like an abandoned military facility which may or may not be fit for humans to be traipsing around in.
  14. Tough for Aneesa but it's happened so many times, other players not wanting to be paired up with her in the Finals. If she really expects to compete for a Final, she's got to show the others that she can do stamina challenges like both the challenge and the elimination in this episode. It's unfair but she doesn't look like she can do anything demanding sustained cardiovascular effort and she isn't able to disprove that notion in any of the challenges or eliminations. It's a prejudice against large people and Eric had to deal with that as well -- and he couldn't disprove those perceptions either. The elimination required stamina and agility. It hurt the bigger players, Aneesa and Josh. They could probably count the number of times each of the 4 players went through the car pulling the rope through and probably the winners were able to loop the rope through more times than their competitors. Melissa would have been able to go through the car easily but her arms and upper body might have had difficulty carrying and pulling that rope. Ha, it's great that there will be more eliminations before the Final. However, it's getting close to the end of the season. They will try to avoid getting in that last elimination but especially against bigger, stronger opponents, because they know they haven't had Hall Battle yet. It was interesting seeing all those ruins and abandoned buildings. I wonder if it's safe in some of those buildings, like there might be toxic waste left over.
  15. Enjoying some of the subtlety about Swedish vs. Danish culture. They each seem to have stereotypes of each other. Swedish seem to be consider more PC, or more woke would be the current word. They don't use those terms but more than once, they imply that Swedish are more progressive while Danish can be very much like Ameircan conservatives. In particular, there is a Danish detective named Jonas who's belittling "homos" and alleging that Saga gets on important cases because of "equality not competence."
  16. Old schoolers must be all over 40 at least? MTV probably don't want old cast members. Seems like they've been trying to inject cast members in their early 20s repeatedly in the last few seasons. I'd like to see some of them but if they're still available to film a reality TV show for several weeks, despite their age, it might be kinda sad.
  17. Well this episode was kind of vintage Siesta Key. It featured a lot of ass shots. And girls in swimsuits too.😄 They couldn't keep Alex out of it completely, since the pregnancy plot involves him. People who've watched this show know who he is so not sure it adds much showing partial shots of him or shots of him walking away. Now the featured couples are all the supporting players. A lot of these scenes may have ended up in the cutting room floor if not for Alex's racist self. Just put it out of its misery, though I suspect they will have another season just so every character can say they denounce Alex's racism, though probably some of them knew about it, didn't bother them.
  18. Probably one of the last interviews Sofia Henin gives about the series, right before the premier of the 4th season in the UK. https://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-05-11/the-bridge-series-4-sofia-helin-saga-noren-final-goodbye/ Doesn't really talk specifically about the season, because they want to keep the stories and plots secret. She had a supporting role in some Australian series but is set to star opposite Kyle McLachlan in Atlantic Crossing, a series being produced by Norwegian TV about Crown Princess Martha, who fled the Nazis and lived in the White House during the war. McLachlan is FDR and Helin is Crown Princess Martha. https://variety.com/2018/tv/news/kyle-maclachlan-stars-franklin-roosevelt-in-world-war-2-atlantic-crossing-sofia-helin-1203035926/ Presumably someone will distribute it in the US.
  19. Main thing I got out of the article is that they do psychiatric reviews as part of casting. They make it sound like they're finding nuggets panning for gold among hundreds of hours of footage. They would never admit that they manipulate situations or simply change what happens simply by being observers, all around. Because what kind of people are they casting? They could cast the most photogenic people (they made a point about how attractive yacht industry people are) but if they're low-key or very introverted, they won't have too much footage to use.
  20. Renewed for season 11: https://www.thewrap.com/curb-your-enthusiasm-to-return-for-season-11-on-hbo/
  21. I'm not denying that they could have met people that night who agreed right then and there to sign releases. But you can't deny that they may have pre-vetted some supposedly random friends who'd appear on the show with these charter guests. All as part of the story about how Kiko will be challenged on this charter to crank out a lot of food for one dinner, while he's been having problems delivering dinner on time already.
  22. I agree to an extent. If you're chartering a big, expensive yacht, you want to be able to entertain guests. But why not bring dates or girlfriends on the trip then? It's got several big cabins so obviously they're not going to charter it just for themselves. Remember above all that this is a TV show. So they'd have to ask the people they meet at the club to come back to the yacht with them. However, they HAVE to sign a release so are they okay with appearing on an American TV show? Many people may not consent to that. It's not just being on TV but all the production crew hovering around you and telling you where to stand or sit so that they can get the camera and lighting right. So much for casually having some drinks or an impromptu after party get together.
  23. Even Hanna said she was glad Bugsy was there because she knows what she's doing, like when she gathered supplies for the last minute pic nic. I don't know if it's true randoms. They go to some club and decide to invite strangers to participate in all the yacht activities, food and drink? First of all, they'd have to sign releases to be filmed, since the yacht is mostly a floating studio. Again, it's one thing to share drinks with people you've just met but bring them back to the yacht? Or from the POV of these people, why would you sign up to go back on a yacht with strangers but they have to sign releases to be filmed for an American TV show? They try to control pretty much everything that goes on board. If they didn't want randoms, assuming they vet the charter guests who gets to appear on the show, they could have had the charter guests sign a release saying they can't bring on friends that the producers don't approve of. Maybe the extra dinner guests is to really put pressure on Kiko, because that looks like one of the primary plots of the next episode. So instead of 48 courses (6 courses times 8 charter guests), he has to make 24 more courses for a total of 72. If he had advanced warning, it should be fine but hey they decided at lunch that these guests are coming for dinner too. In any event, when they choose the charter guests or cast them, they must consider which guests would likely present issues for the crew. But if they can't spontaneously cause issues, they may think up some ideas to challenge various cast members. Like one season on one of the BD shows, a wannabe chef came on and went into the galley and told the chef she'll be watching him. OK we know that's totally contrived bullshit. This one, well Kiko has been late with dinners more than once and this is only the third charter? So maybe the idea is to really make him work hard. He just likes to cook, doesn't want to have to schmooze the guests but Sandy told him to do it. If the food is the main driver of how much the tip is, I guess the chef on every season will always be on the hot seat.
  24. I think the other guy was reluctant and Kawame proposed they find a third who had a place. Seems like Kwame doesn't have his own place so he's hooking up in bathrooms of supermarkets and so on. So he goes on an app. and they go over to a stranger's place. So in both cases, Arabella and Kwamme hooked up with people who wanted to go bareback. Zain just goes ahead and does it and seems apologetic, saying he thought that's what Bella wanted too. Bella seems to get over it, as long as he paid for the emergency contraceptive. Kwame was forced, Bella wasn't, though she wasn't happy about it at first. In the therapy session, she doesn't seem that serious. What was the acronym, about being drugged and raped? But when the therapist suggests some non-sexual activities like yoga or painting when being with friends, she rolls her eyes blatantly at the therapist. Then she goes to meet up with Zain, she doesn't want to drink anything at that cafe -- was it the same place as episode 1?. In fact she flashed on the glass of drink a woman at another table takes, so she's still shaky about being drugged. Still her initial reaction in episode 2 to being spiked seemed kind of casual, like it happened to her before or she's seen it happen to others. But now, she's afraid to take a drink at an establishment? Arabella and Zain have good banter. She seems to be impressed that he went to Cambridge?
  25. What are the war flashbacks suppose to reveal? Perry was a badass, led the charge, could have died, made some mercy killings. 1930s PTSD for a hard-boiled detective. Blatant racism everywhere but you're not going to see or hear it from the main characters probably. Infidelity, by a woman, is a big deal back then but Perry doesn't see that as making Emily likely for conspiring to kidnap her own child. He's more evolved than his peers of the time because of his horrific trench warfare memories? Good seeing that Della isn't going to be a potted plant. She will answer the phones for now but EB better hire more people or get an answering service. Some characters will be formed through a 21st century ethos while others are still of the unenlightened, but brutal times -- people living in the streets, queuing up outside the labor agency for work. Sister Alice didn't go by the expected script according to Mother in her funeral services sermon, talking about how the justice system of the time, which we've seen is corrupt, will conquer the evil who killed the child. Tatiana Maslany gets the billing but Officer Drake had a more impressive debut than Sister Alice.
