  1. I don't know a lot about Catherine's life other than the bare essentials, but I'm always interested to learn so I'm grateful for this thread and for Wikipedia lol. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_de'_Medici "The wedding, a grand affair marked by extravagant display and gift-giving,[19] took place in the Église Saint-Ferréol les Augustins in Marseille on 28 October 1533.[20] Prince Henry danced and jousted for Catherine. The fourteen-year-old couple left their wedding ball at midnight to perform their nuptial duties. Henry arrived in the bedroom with King Francis, who is said to have stayed until the marriage was consummated. He noted that "each had shown valour in the joust".[19] Clement visited the newlyweds in bed the next morning and added his blessings to the night's proceedings." I didn't realize they were both just fourteen.
  2. I just want to say that closing the episode with Patti Smith's cover of Gloria was amazing. I think we're in for a wild ride!
  3. I think it was probably more discreet IRL, but this group is something else. I heard a smattering of applause, a bravo, and well done. But then, the Germanic position is always a safe bet. LOL
  4. It's got my interest! Can't go wrong with Samantha Morton and Charles Dance. I like the sarcastic dark humor, but was the bloody scalpel scene really necessary? Yikes. Who doesn't love a juggling dwarf? And the main performance drew rave reviews... Can't wait to see what happens next.
  5. Sounds like a great trip, Haleth. The books has lots of pics, illustrations and old maps of the areas too.
  6. I liked it for the first half, but then he became obsessed with the biting sand flies and leishmaniasis. I guess this was the "medical mystery" hyped on the cover, but there really was no mystery about that. Then all the pictures included were tiny and worthless on the Kindle, not that they included any artifacts anyway. I thought it was poorly edited for a big publishing imprint. I'm really loving this one though, written about the two guys who uncovered so many Mayan ruins in the 19th century. Jungle of Stone: Discovery of the Lost Civilization of the Maya pages 544 Free w/Prime Doctor Ice Pick pages 85 .99 or Free w/Prime "A haunting and true short story of the lobotomist who cut a brutal swathe through the lives of thousands of vulnerable Americans..." About the same quack who "operated" on Rosemary Kennedy. Disturbing how he was able to get away with it for so long. Æthelflæd: Lady of the Mercians pages 246 $2.99 (on sale through Sept.) The Lonely Life: An Autobiography, by Bette Davis pages 255 $1.99 (on sale through Sept.)
  7. I've been spoiled by ebooks and their adjustable type on my Kindle or computer screen, but buying them can get expensive I don't like time limits, and my local library sucks anyway, so I have to limit myself to a budget per-month.
  8. The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story pages 326 2.99 "a true adventure deep into the Honduran rainforest in this riveting narrative about the discovery of a lost civilization -- culminating in a stunning medical mystery." Just started this fascinating one. Saving Italy: The Race to Rescue a Nation's Treasures from the Nazis pages 497 2.99 From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Monuments Men: "An astonishing account of a little-known American effort to save Italy's art during World War II." Tom Brokaw The Very Secret Sex Lives of Medieval Women pages 345 2.99 A “wickedly entertaining, informative and thought-provoking” look at romance, courtship, and other intimacies behind closed Medieval doors." The man was a big time IT executive and his wife taught bible classes from home about how to be the perfect subservient stepford wife. She worshipped him like a God until one day he snuck up and beat her to death with steel pipe.
  9. I'm a huge Coen's fan, and don't necessarily believe anything they say, any more than I believe their "This is a true story". I don't doubt they had little to do with last season, however. It's not so much the location or cast, but it was devoid of their signature dark humor and playfulness. `The differences between seasons one and four is striking.
  10. That's the official story, but I just don't believe it.
  11. I'm reading the 2nd novel about old Hollywood called The Trouble With Scarlett. The casting of Gone With The Wind is only a part of the book, which revolves around the infamous real-life hotel The Garden of Alla on Sunset Blvd. Residents included Tallulah Bankhead, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, Harpo Marx, Robert Benchley, et al along with our fictional 3 main characters. Other recurring characters are Joan Crawford, Louis B. Mayer, Ramon Navarro, Errol Flynn, director George Cukor, and dozens of others. It's no Gone With The Wind, but it's fun and light summer reading, and the author seems to know where all the bodies are buried. His website has a ton of pictures, a map of Old Hollywood that features all the mentioned hangouts, and a free download of the first two books. https://martinturnbull.com/
  12. I'm hoping the Coens take more control and get this series back on track.
  13. Dish Network shows the east coast feed, so I'll watch it at 6:00 pm (west coast). It looks like it will be over 90 minutes. All the description says is Season finale. Six years before Saul Goodman meets Walter White, he is known as small-time lawyer Jimmy McGill.
  14. Yeah, I think she may have chronic hybristophilia, and probably shouldn't be around criminal defendants anyway. Florida man is better than writing fangirl letters to Lyle Menendez.

  16. I've been using this lately from Kraft. It's creamy and I really like the flavor. You'd never guess it's half the fat.
  17. Thanks for the reminder! It's been a while but that's a great source. Also my apologies if any of the books are no longer on sale. I checked but luckily only found one this time.
  18. My local library has only !% digitalized books available, so I'm always looking for bargains. Amazon will often have great sales but you have to be quick - prices can change overnight without warning. Here are a few that I've found while browsing, but haven't necessarily read yet. Will update. Personally my tastes run to history, historical fiction, non-fiction, Old Hollywood and some true crime, but feel free to post any deals you know of in whatever genre you enjoy, to share. Thanks. Antony and Cleopatra, by Adrian Goldsworthy pages 612 2.99 Augustus at War: The Struggle for the Pax Augusta pages 875 2.99 A Daughter's Love: Thomas More & His Dearest Meg Pages 406 1.99 Katherine, by Anya Seton Pages 516 Cost: Free w/Prime Wolsey: The Life of King Henry VIII's Cardinal Pages 426 Cost 2.99 The Poison Keeper: An enthralling historical novel of Renaissance Italy Pages 410 Cost 2.99 The Garden on Sunset: A Novel of Golden-Era Hollywood 327 pages Cost: Free The Vanderbilt Women: Dynasty of Wealth, Glamour and Tragedy Pages 502 Cost 2.99 True Crime Heart Full of Lies: A True Story of Desire and Death, by Ann Rule Pages 480 Cost 1.99 An Almost Perfect Murder Pages 351 Cost 1 .99
  19. Thanks for mentioning that book. I just found it's free with Prime so downloaded it from Amazon. Sounds terrific. https://www.amazon.com/Katherine-Anya-Seton-ebook/dp/B008454XNS/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Anya+Seton'&qid=1660159199&s=digital-text&sr=1-5
  20. The Stuart clan would be awesome. Also, although Lady Margaret Beaufort is often cast as support, she really deserves her own series. To me Harriet Walter was the best thing about The Spanish Princess.
  21. I've worked my share of boring, monotonous jobs, but usually my co-workers have been anything but. I'm fine with Kim working with sprinkler fittings. She doesn't trust her own judgment, nor should she. Just look at her taste in men. Earplugs during sex is a small price to pay.
  22. I wonder if Kim would have confessed if she thought there was a good chance of legal consequences? Was her confession motivated primarily by a desire to clear her own conscience without too much risk involved?
  23. What's the difference between Duke's and Best Food's (Hellman's) mayo? I don't recall seeing Duke's here on the west coast, but I may look for it.
