  1. I continued my Narnia journey with The Horse and his Boy which I found entertaining. I enjoyed reading a Narnia story that was entirely new for me. Now I am reading A Lady by Midnight by Tessa Dare which is book 3 in the Spindle Cove series. This book features Corporal Thorne and music teacher Kate. She is an orphan and the secrets of her past could have serious consequences for her and Thorne. I am a little frustrated with Thorne because he refuses to just speak up about important things but I also feel for him because he clearly doesn’t see himself as worthy of love. So I kinda want to yell at him but also give him a hug which is probably close to Kate’s feelings, lol.
  2. Now I am reading Captive of the Labyrinth: Sarah L. Winchester, Heiress of the Rifle Fortune. I remember watching the Ripley’s Believe It or Not episode about the decades of construction of her famous house. I was familiar with the mythology about her which claimed she was superstitious and possibly mentally ill believing construction on her house must keep going forever to prevent her death. The book makes it clear the stories used to drive tourists to her home are not accurate. Aspects of the house that seem odd do have reasonable explanations.
  3. I really enjoyed The Kissing Quotient. I liked the characters actually to know each other and we got to see their bond develop. My only issue is the characters poor communication about how they felt going on too long but the book provided a rationale for both of them to struggle to express themselves. Now I will continue my Narnia journey with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.
  4. Women who are viewed as difficult get villainized potentially leading them to struggle to get new projects but men who are difficult are more likely to be excused getting opportunities to work again.
  5. I remember hearing horror stories about David ORussell for years. If I remember correctly. On the set of Three Kings George Clooney and Russell got into a physical fight. There was a leaked of Lily Tomlin and him arguing in the middle if shooting a scene in I ❤️Hukabees including him throwing things but they reconciled afterwards. He was so nasty to Amy Adams while shooting American Hustle that her costar Christian Bale intervened. George Clooney Once Got in a Fistfight With This Controversial Director Video of Tomlin/ORussell argument Lily Tomlin revisits David O. Russell drama Amy Adams: David O Russell made me cry every day on American Hustle I think Lily Tomlin talking about Russell being brilliant is very telling. There’s this unfortunate attitude that artistic people who are abusive should be tolerated because their work is so good. The product they are creating is more valued than the human beings being abused by the creator. It’s how so many monstrous people continue working in Hollywood.
  6. Sometimes breaking up a couple does permanent damage to my ability to root for them (Ross/Rachel- Friends). Sometimes I root for them to work things out and get back together (Shawn/Angela- Boy Meets World, Ben/Leslie- Parks and Rec). Sometimes I think I have lost interest in a pairing but the writers/actors win me over again by the end of the show (Nick/Jess- New Girl, Elliot/JD- Scrubs). Great Shawn/Angela analysis on YouTube.
  7. Just finished The Magician’s Nephew and I will be reading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe soon. Since I have already seen a couple if adaptations of TLTWTW , I don’t think reading TMN ruined anything for me. Now I am reading The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang which is a contemporary romance. Stella a woman has Aspergers who struggles with relationships and intimacy . She decides to hire an escort so she can get sexual practice. Michael has rules about avoiding getting close to his clients but he finds himself getting attached to Stella.
  8. I decided to finally read all the Narnia books by C.S Lewis. The set I got starts with The Magician’s Nephew. I just started and hate Uncle Andrew who is just so happy to use children for his experiments in traveling to another dimension. He’s decided it’s too dangerous for him to travel to the other world but tricking children into going there is fine. But It’s clear that Andre is supposed to be the worst. I can tell it’s going to be a quick read. I’m hoping that Digory’s prediction that Uncle Andrew will have bad consequences proves correct.
  9. I liked the Balthazar/Erika romance. The bonding scent and marking were referenced. I hope Ward does something interesting with the villains because that’s an area of weakness in the series. I really hope for happiness for Lassiter soon.
  10. So I finished Infinite Jest and was left with feelings of disappointment and frustration. I hung in there believing the overall story would be worth it but I was wrong. It just sorta ends with no resolution. It’s just over and I was so annoyed. Now I have moved out on to the more satisfying Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward. I am in the middle of Lover Arisen which features the thief Balthazar and the Detective Erika. I have mixed feelings about the villain. I found the Omega boring and so didn’t mind his departure. But Devina as a replacement is very “been there, done that” because she was the villain of Jr Ward’s Fallen Angel series. I was hoping that including her in the Black Dagger series would add a new dimension to her character but so far it’s all the same in all the books. She’s still a demon who hoards designer clothing and fixates on trying force a man who despises her to love her. She so powerful and uses her magical skills on petty bs. She has more personality than the Omega but her story is so repetitive. Whether she’s obsessing over Jim, Butch, Balthazar, etc it’s all the same. The only thing that changes is who she’s obsessed with. Plus I don’t know if she even really wants love. I think she’d be bored by a man who actually loved her. She’s fixated in on the unattainable. Jr Ward needs to give her something new to do or get a new villain.
  11. I’m also wondering if Lifetime is going to get into the exclusive contract game. They definitely have more resources to compete with Hallmark. I liked the way things were where actors had freedom to hop from one network to another. Sometimes one actor would be in Christmas movies on different networks the same year. Yet locking down the actors makes business sense with GAC actively trying to recruit Hallmark talent. Plus, I assume the actors appreciate the job security a contract provides. I do wonder if some will insist on being free agents and continue hopping from one network to another. Some actors don’t like longterm contracts. I remember a show I used to watch and wondering why a popular supporting character never got upgraded to lead but it turned out it was the actor’s choice because he found the contract to be a lead to be too restricting. I remember Hilarie Burton and her horrible experience with sexual harassment on One Tree Hill and how she said that experience makes her hesitate to sign long term contracts unless she knows the people involved extremely well or has a lot of creative control. She’s done some Hallmark, but I think Lifetime offered her more control so she’s pops up there more often.
  12. Because of GAC business model of poaching Hallmark talent, I’m betting there will be more exclusive contract announcements for Hallmark and GAC. Hallmark has to lock down their talent to prevent losing more people. But the Hallmark machine is so big I think it can withstand losing a few actors. I think some have been overused and the audience would enjoy newbies joining the rotation of movies. But there are favorites I am always happy to see. I am relieved Andrew Walker is sticking with Hallmark. I hope Nikki DeLoach, Paul Campbell, Kristoffer Polaha, Autumn Reeser, Alison Sweeny, Michael Rady, and Luke Macfarlane stay with Hallmark. I also look forward to new faces in leading roles.
  13. You definitely have a point about unsympathetic characters. And the beginning was a struggle because of the vast amount of plots. I’ve adjusted to the jumping around to various characters/plots. Parts of it are a rough read but it’s compelling. I must find out how it ends.
  14. I’m reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. His writing reminds me of Joseph Heller. The book is comedic in tone but parts of it can be grim to read about. The book is massive and there’s a lot of characters. The most recurring locations are a Tennis Academy and a halfway house for addicts. Addiction of various kinds (drugs, sex, entertainment) is a constant throughout. I am halfway through and very curious of how things will conclude.
  15. Why This Creepy Melody Is In So Many Movies How The Music Spoils Sweeney Todd (and Why That’s a Good Thing) The Dies Irae really is so baked into our culture’s musical vocabulary regarding death. I probably associate it the most with The Shining and Sweeney Todd.
  16. I'm currently enjoying A Week to Be Wicked by Tessa Dare which is book 2 in her Spindle Cove Series. This book features Minerva and Colin. Worried that her mother's determination that Minerva's sister Diana marry the womanizing viscount Colin will lead to unhappiness for Diana, Minerva attempts to intervene. Since he's blocked from accessing his fortune until he either marries or reaches a certain age, she offers him the prize money from a geological competition if he will escort her to Scotland so she can present her findings. So Minerva and Colin have the kind of trip where things go wrong while they deal with an attraction stronger than either anticipated.
  17. This is a really interesting video about the voting process. I had assumed the movie with the most votes won best picture. I had no idea about their ranking voting system. How the Oscars Work….and How They Don’t
  18. The Academy Is Facing Harsh Criticism After “West Side Story” Lead Rachel Zegler Revealed She Wasn’t Invited To The Oscars Despite The Film Having Seven Nominations I was surprised that the lead actress in a best picture nominated film wasn’t invited. I know she herself wasn’t nominated but I figured if the film was nominated for the big award the leads would be invited. Who decides who goes and who doesn’t? Is it a matter of each film being allotted a certain amount of tickets or is it up to the Academy to individually invite people to the ceremony? Do the producers of the nominated film have no say over who gets an invitation and who doesn’t? Why can’t someone from the film who was invited bring her as their plus one? edited to add another thought: Was Ansel Elgort also not invited? Maybe because the of scandal surrounding him he wasn’t invited and it was decided to also disinvite Rachel so it’s not so obvious he’s being pushed out. But that totally screws her over unfairly. That’s just my speculation which is probably wrong.

    Batman Movies

Why are Batman Movies Afriad of Robin? I really think the new series starting with The Batman is the best chance to introduce Robin.
  20. I’m disappointed that Aeryn and John from Farscape and Becca and Jesse from Life Goes On didn’t make the list but several other couples I enjoyed made it.
  21. I’m reading Melissa Gilbert’s biography Prairie Tale. It’s an interesting read and she isn’t shy about sharing the events of her life.
  22. I thought his request that the money be counted discreetly made sense. He didn’t want to draw attention to the large some of money he was withdrawing which could be a security risk for him. The teller’s overreaction was totally uncalled for.
  23. Sadly systematic biases can affect anyone. Being a member of a particular group doesn’t guarantee a person won’t perpetuate profiling.
