I know a good number of Muslim men, I used to teach ESL to Saudi Arabian students and their wives, and while family honor IS a big thing, I don't know anyone who would have this public freakout. I think "reputable" is the keyword here. You can almost always find someone to do it for the right price. I have a friend going through IVF right now and I've been really surprised at how little her overall health (which is VERY bad) seems to matter to the clinic. "Tote" IS a verb, as well as a noun. It's not that much different than saying you "carried" a baby. I've grown up listening to people talk about "toting" things. It sounds weird, but it's not altogether grammatically incorrect. I actually really enjoy hearing regional dialect. It's part of their culture. It would be a sad, boring place if everyone spoke the same. My take is that it wasn't the use of the word "tote" that made the doctor react, it was the fact that a 54 yo woman seriously thought that bleeding after several years of not having a cycle thought it was a good thing, and that she was more concerned about giving her young husband a baby than by the idea of possible cancer.

It DID feel real, and I think that's where things often get complicated. Our kids'godfather is gay and his parents, Pentecostal Holiness from Appalachia, had always been taught that homosexuality was a sin that would send people straight to hell. They struggled when their son came out. On the one hand they loved him and knew he was a good man, but on the other they'd spent their whole lives being taught that homosexuality was "bad." It took many years but they finally came to accept him and his partner. They also left their church. It was so sad watching the whole family struggling, but in the end they'd all reached some kind of peace with it.
