Tournament of Champions - Season 5 Discussion Thread
Harry24 replied to Mellowyellow's topic in Tournament Of Champions
Among the many reasons I enjoy this show is how it proves the chops that some of these chefs from less prestigious backgrounds have. I’m thinking of Britt, Tobias and now Kevin. (And to this list I’d have to add Darnell, sad as it is to say now.). It’s clear that some of these chefs who are perhaps not Top Chef contestants or fine dining experts who worked under the Kellers of the world are absolutely amazing and can stand toe to toe with the Brooke Williamsons, Alex Guarnaschellis et al. The essence of this show’s quality is the blind tasting. That said, wake me when someone can challenge Mei Lin. :-) -
Tournament Of Champions - General Discussion

I see your “Hootie” and I raise you “Beef Tongue!!!” (from All-Stars). -
So glad to see Osaka beating two quality opponents in a row. Her returning to around the top of the game would be great for me as I find her game so darn exciting to watch. I just love watching clean, powerful hitters like her, Davenport and others.
-
Thank you, THANK YOU, Jannik Sinner!! Thanks to you the rest of the week will be a little brighter.

Did anyone else watch Blinkova take out Rybakina? Oh. My. God.

Will miss Madison and definitely Petra (congratulations, Petra!), but I will REALLY miss Muchova. She is such a gifted, entertaining player. Incredibly bad injury karma.

I can’t remember which episode it is, but later on it’s revealed that Frasier converted the space with the W/D hookup into storage for his hats (IIRC). That may be the episode where he ends up buying Daphne a car at the end.

The Dick Van Dyke Show - General Discussion

And the earrings were Alaska and Hawaii! I actually love that episode. The jeweler Laura and Millie visit to remake the brooch was fantastic. -
Given that Lennie was the King of the One Liners, Adam was Crown Prince and Abbie Crown Princess, I’ve often wondered if there were certain writers who had a special knack for writing quips for each of the three. I imagine the room full of writers struggling and saying, “We need a quip for Adam. Call Marge!!!"

I think Kathrine Narducci absolutely hit it out of the park with a few of her appearances. She doesn’t seem like an actress playing a juicy scene. I love that great scene when she hits Mike with a frying pan after they’ve entered the apartment to take care of the husband whose dick she cut off. She never, EVER stops running her mouth! And then her realization that her husband is dead ... there aren’t a lot of actresses who could play that stupid, that passionate, and that heartbroken all at once. And then her appearance on the stand in Faccia. She’s so poignant as the voice of the people all those “colorful” mob characters just grind under their heels, all the while helping to sell books, magazines, etc. Poignant and believable as a real person.

Just answering a comment from seven (!!!) years ago. I think Vanessa Williams would have made a fantastic DA after Steven Hill retired.

Way to go, Frederick!!! At his age, he may have lots of room for improvement too. The original plan was for Wong to do beam and Roberson to do vault and floor. So Wong ended up adding vault and floor and, ironically, faltering on beam. Biles and Jones did all four, and Blakey did bars.
-
Exciting competition! Poor Roberson getting injured before even getting to compete. I hope Wong is feeling great about what she accomplished. Jones was beautiful and steady. And Simone, what can you say that hasn’t been said about her brilliance, mastery and competitive grit. Brazil and France were great. I noticed Andrade outscored Simone on the same vault, which surprised me. And de los Santos looks as though she has really improved with her year in Houston. She was beautiful before, and now is even better. Especially sad for GB. I’m sure China is sad too. Theirs was the death of many cuts on the beam it looked like. I need a nap. (Congratulations to all the athletes.)

The competition is on CNBC and Peacock. Here’s a link to the schedule. For the first two days of qualification (starting tomorrow), they’re also providing recorded highlights on YouTube. NBC is apparently showing nothing. Weird.
-
Come on, Coco! Keep the ball deeper! And keep your cool!
-
What did he do? (I can never stand to watch him, but I AM curious.)
-
Crap. McEnroe The Elder is back. I’d been enjoying more Cliff D. Great win for Madison.
-
I didn’t mean that as a diss. I just meant it as a (hopefully sort of cute) way to differentiate between the Two Taylors: a round, brown girl and a skinny, white boy.
-
I don’t know anything serious against Fritz*, but I find him boring, and it bugs me when someone so handsome destroys it by looking like he’s wearing whatever he picked up off the floor, along with deeply unflattering facial scruff. It would be one thing if he was charmingly self-conscious of his handsomeness or something, but he just went from looking beautiful to looking like he smells bad. That said, I respect the hell out of him for making the leap from the Top 20 into the Top 10. That is one hellacious leap to make at this point in a career, and I’m so impressed by it. See also: Rafter, Patrick (who was beyond dreamy and was seemingly even nicer than he was gorgeous, plus two Grand Slams!) *(It’s not like he gets get cuddly with war criminals, as far as I’m aware.)
-
Wow, go, Taylor!!! (Mom Taylor, not skinny white boy Taylor, who’s not a big favorite of mine.). Great win against Haddad-Maya. Looking forward to watching the recording later.

So happy for Thiem! I think I heard a commenter say that Rune hasn’t won a match since Wimbledon. I don’t know if there’s an injury in the mix. Very bummed Korda lost. I didn’t see any of it, but I was wondering if the ankle injury was a factor. Come ON, Coco!!!!!
-
And Alcaraz, Sinner and Zverev are in the same quarter, with Medvedev and Rune in the other quarter of the top half. EVERYONE dangerous is in the other half from FFF (Fuck-Face Faker.) Women’s draw sucks for me: Coco, Petra and Iga are in the same quarter. Damn!!
-
I hope Sinner can develop into a true rival for Alcaraz. He seems like a lovely boy. So impressed by Pegula. She has clearly been struggling with choking in the big moments, and this week she totally choked against both Gauff and Swiatek, but then managed to hang in and win both those matches. I hope this result helps her shake off the choking. And that she passes that along to her doubles partner! Pegula, as impressive as she is, is charisma-free, and I find it hard to get truly excited about her. Coco, now, is another story. Hope she can shake off the choke-itis too! Edited August 19 to add: Yay, Coco!!!!!!! Way to stay strong!
-
So pleased and happy for Coco. She looked fantastic this week. I’m also enjoying Andrea Petkovic as commentator. Really informative, opinionated, intelligent and funny.

I hope having Chapman, Cordero and now German in the rear view mirror will help shift the Yankees’ bad karma. (This is assuming neither German nor Cordero returns, god willing.)
