  1. Great swim! Regarding the 1972 baskatball game, the short story is that it was the height of the Cold War and an eastern bloc official overrode the referees to add time back on the clock TWICE to give the USSR extra chances to inbound the ball for a final shot.
  2. Speaking of dissing their silver medals, the 1972 men's basketball silver medals are still sitting in the vault, since the Americans didn't even show for the ceremony after they were robbed of the gold.
  3. My sister was a great gymnast through college, and she never allowed my mom to watch her compete. She said she couldn't concentrate if she thought mom was cowering in the stands. My dad drove her everywhere. I am always amazed at the parents/loved ones who make such a spectacle of themselves in the stands. How can you think that helps your athlete in any way?
  4. Perhaps the sweetest thing ever was his reaction to his teammate's tears on the podium. I am a Michael Phelps fan. His mother, on the other hand . . .
  5. I was walking a fine line responding to hubby's comment about Adam Peaty's broad shoulders. Cutie pie indeed.

Or, you know, attached to someone who was guarding him.
  7. I like the new roommate. I am confused by all these clients who are now suing. They usually won and probably were on contingent few schedules so it doesn't matter who did what come payment time. Are they arguing over-billing? What's the claim?

The Indians held a ceremony in which Yan Gomes "sacrificed" a chicken (from Target) to Jobu. He still went hitless and then got injured in the next game. Apparently the baseball gods were not pleased, but it looked hilarious! Love this team! https://www.google.com/amp/www.letsgotribe.com/platform/amp/2016/7/16/12206934/cleveland-indians-sacrifice-chicken-ask-jobu-to-forgive-yan-gomes?client=safari#
  9. I liked Malcolm Jamal Warner; that might have been it.
  10. I feel your pain, stillshimpy, and completely agree. We had an author call in to a book club meeting once years ago. I had not particularly liked the book and had earlier mentioned my big problem with it. When there was a lull in the conversation, because the book didn't merit much discussion, someone in the group told the author I had an issue with it and asked me to elaborate. I was mortified! We had also signed up to hear the author of Eligible. I canceled as soon as I realized how bad the book was because I could picture it happening again. Even when I hate the book I can appreciate the work in creating it and the courage in putting it out there for critiques.

Nope, his brother charged for his camp, too - I think @$250.
  12. Gifts are not included in income. At least not when I was an estate planning attorney, fifteen years ago. And, yes, Candy would pay that money directly to the school so that it wouldn't be counted against the amount she is allowed to give away tax-free each year. Also so that Tori and Dean couldn't spend it on Party City crap for their pet lizard's birthday.

I am surprised no one has yet mentioned this kerfuffle: http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-curry-responds-to-basketball-camp-criticism-2016-7?yptr=yahoo?r=UK&IR=T
  14. Hated Eligible. She may have stolen the names, but her characters bear no resemblance to Jane Austen's creation. I found myself offended at many points. It was bad!
  15. We know Christine had a difficult relationship with her mother (did we ever get details?), and her mother died before they could reconcile. I remember her urging the sergeant to reconcile with his son and telling him she would give anything to be able to fix things with her mom; I am not surprised she wants the same for Mary Beth.

It was a great streak, but I don't mind the Tribe losing. The last thing I wanted to happen was for them to start playing tight because they got wrapped up in keeping the streak alive. Now they can just start a new streak. Anyway, we Clevelanders have already seen what happens when a team gets too wrapped up in a regular season record!
  17. Other than Reshma's lullaby at the beginning, which was gorgeous, hubby was horrified to hear singing and fast forwarded through all the dance numbers. My favorite part was Evan's reaction to Paige's news. The way he wanted to keep it quiet and then turned and screamed the news to his brother was perfectly in character as well as adorable. I know they are fictional, but I am so happy for them. I thought Evan's toast was good. Not a flat out forgiveness, but a thawing and hope for the future. Eddie drives me insane so I don't really care about his happy ending. Where was Emma?

If I were Barney, I would have a lot of fun today after striking out Napoli. There should be a lot of chatter on the bases today!
  19. Tucker!! Whose dad was Andrew McCarthy. And he had a crazy awesome girlfriend. I miss them. This is the same guy who last week told the house woman he thought she had syphillis BEFORE the tests had come back. One of those "pause the DVR and tell hubby that is not a diagnosis you ever give someone as a hunch" moments.

I know this is the prevailing opinion, but I am going to have to disagree. First, everyone knew the Warriors were a bad match up for him; then he gets a nasty concussion in game 2 that I don't think he had fully recovered from by game 4 and maybe even 5, no matter what he says; the public had set him up to be the biggest scapegoat, unfairly IMO (when LeBron and Kyrie were on fire for 82 points, did people really want Kevin to demand the ball to pad his own numbers?); then in game 7 he goes lights out on the boards and has an amazing 4th quarter stop guarding Curry of all people. He needs to work on his defense, but I am glad he is staying in Cleveland!
  21. I agree, Melora, that the book was highly overrated. I really didn't like it at all.

Tribe hit four! In one inning! Off Verlander! Hope this winning thing is contagious in Cleveland!
  23. I loved that Chris always referred to the baby by her full name with a big smile when she said Christine.
  24. I was the last in my family to see Wonderful Life at about age 8. I was in the back room on the B&W TV (because, of course) and I came out each commercial complaining about how bad/unfair the movie was. My mom would smile and send me back. By the end I could begudgingly see how he could decide his life was wonderful, but I was still miffed. She chuckled at my passion. It's a funny story I like to share now because I still remember my ranting, but I have never made my kids watch it.
  25. I found "What Alice Forgot" at the library book sale and bought it for $.40 before remembering I didn't like "The Husband's Secret." Thought I would give Liane Moriarty another try. Nope, still don't like her books. Too bad because the premise was interesting (Alice wakes up from a fall thinking it is 1998 and she is expecting her first child with her wonderful husband. She finds out it is 2008, she has three kids she does not remember, and she is going through a bitter divorce. How did she get here?) Unfortunately, it seems to boil down to Frankly, I can't believe a woman wrote this.
