  1. Made Ina's herbed roast fish using tilapia fillets, tiny white creamer potatoes boiled/sliced with butter & parsley, and those nice green beans that you microwave in a bag. I put them in a bowl with some of Wegman's herbed butter. Wegman's sells the tilapia (and also salmon) individually wrapped. Love 'em cause they thaw so easily/quickly. I had a no-sugar-added Klondike bar for dessert ;>)
  2. There was a post a while back about Joan Crawford's dismal childhood. I've read in several recent articles that she also was sexually abused by her stepfather. So, no wonder she was such a miserable person (and mother!)
  3. JTMacc99: your son sounds like a junior gourmet, turning his nose up at mac & cheese and snacking on grapes! Good for him :>)
  4. Did anyone pick up on Olivia de Havilland's remark about the source of the nastiness between the two women? She said it didn't come from hatred; it came from pain. She looked sad when she said that and I immediately thought of the feud between Olivia and her sister, Joan Fontaine. (don't know if this has already been mentioned here)
  5. And all ingredients put together with a non-stop little smile ;>)
  6. I don't think either actor (SS and JL) can be Bette and Joan. They'd have to be impersonators and impersonators usually aren't actors. And if Susan tried to sound like Bette, I believe she'd be ridiculed. Even though, IMO, Jessica is too refined looking to be Joan, I'm getting the insecurities, angst, etc from this actor showing what a sad figure Crawford was. Susan looks like she could be Bette's daughter but she's not as extreme looking as Bette. I think it's going to get even better next week when they start showing them filming the movie. Oh yeah--I sure hope they show some more Mamacita! She reminds me of Fred Armisen playing all those female characters on SNL.
  7. Loved it! Wish they gave us 2 hours this first night. IMO Susan Sarandon has become Bette Davis - even looks like her. I wish they'd found another actress to play Joan. Jessica Lange's face is too fine to play the coarse looking Crawford (and I remember what she looked like in the 60's--tough!) The opening credits were fun to watch with terrific graphics. This is going to be a fun series (it'll help me be patient for Fargo's Season III).
  8. Oh rats--Bette Davis spoke in such a distinctive way (was that an exaggerated New England accent?), very clipped words.
  9. Rotisserie chicken, Stove Top stuffing (w/ minced celery & leaves), Bob Evans mashed potatoes, and steamed thin fresh asparagus w/ homemade Russian dressing drizzled over them. It was a fast dinner because we were off to The Barns at Wolf Trap for a quartet concert. Great talent & easy to get to :>)
  10. I wonder if soaking the rack in a sink of water w/ dishwasher powdered detergent might help? That's what I do with difficult to clean pots and casserole dishes and it really makes it easier to get the stuff off.
  11. I just copied this recipe for the Cinnabon clone rolls and wondered if you could taste that pudding in the rolls. When I've used instant vanilla pudding in other recipes, I could taste something unusual. Hope not cause this recipe looks good otherwise.
  12. I recently used the whisk for the first time. Needed to really whip up some egg yolks so I decided to try it. Did a great job. I love putting Italian parsley, cilantro, slivered almonds, some dressings, in the little processor. No hauling out the heavy Cuisinart FP--so easy and quick. My stepdaughter and I gave each other this set for Xmas quite a few years ago and we both love it.
  13. I would say the two indispensable kitchen gadgets to me are my Cuisinart food processor and my Braun set (immersion blender, attachable whisk, and a very small processor with tiny blades (someone else mentioned theirs a few pages back). Whenever I get these items out, I'm so appreciative that they were invented!
  14. Don't know if this qualifies as a pet peeve or what. The other day I met a friend for lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. It was a nice lunch, the food was decent, but midway through lunch a couple came in (ages? he might've been late 40's or early 50's; she late 30's). They sat behind my friend, together, on the same side of the booth. I thought to myself--odd. So, while my friend is telling me about lectures she attended, talking about current events, etc., I'm noticing these two characters. First I see him feed her a heaping forkful of some type of chopped salad. Then, she feeds him a forkful of whatever she's eating. At the end of their meal, he puts his head on her shoulder. I couldn't tell my friend (until we left) cause they'd hear me. Sheesh. A CPK tryst I betcha on a Tuesday afternoon.
  15. Grilled brats on hot dog rolls, gussied up baked beans, tossed salad + just a little leftover Gruyere gratin (it had been in the back of the fridge for a few days but still outstanding heated up). Unfortunately, Mr. P914 brought home a humongo cheesecake from Costco. Good grief we could serve the neighborhood! It is quite delicious ;>(
  16. I sent an email to NBC today suggesting that they replace the Tara & Johnny Show with some serious commentators like John Coughlin, Charlie White and Tanith Belbin + any other retired US skaters. Maybe Tanith talks too much but that can be easily corrected. What about Tania Kwiatkowski? She's had experience commentating. I am so sick of Tara and Johnny, the outre outfits complete with cutesy poses. I said that NBC would never dream of having such people commentate other sports so why should competitive figure skating be subjected to this silliness. Haven't heard back from them yet (someone was supposed to forward my comments as I'd just sent an email to NBC.com asking for help since they don't provide you with a real contact us link. So, if you'd like to join in, please do. I really don't want to endure another Olympics with these two. Johnny could be a decent commentator but I think he's a bit distracted by the fashion aspect and as some folks have noted, maybe he's a little too close to his competitive days to be totally objective re: the men's competition.
  17. Sauted salmon fillets in a little olive oil/sesame oil w/ garlic and Mural of Flavor. Served with angel hair pasta in peanut sauce w/ fresh veggies thrown in. I wish I could do home made pizzas (as in one of those outdoor pizza ovens!!!) but they've always come out of the oven so bready (crusts) that I could barely eat them (and that's ready made crusts & crusts made from scratch). I need to live over a pizza parlor :>)
  18. This is the recipe I use (I double the sauce and I don't use cornstarch). http://jeanetteshealthyliving.com/dan-dan-mien-recipe/
  19. It really annoys me when I hear Tara making snarky remarks about any of the ladies looking juniorish. She always looked juniorish to me. When she'd land her jumps, I could almost hear a ka-lunk as her skates hit the ice (she never landed gently--maybe from all the years jumping in roller skates?). Tara's skating style didn't improve until after she'd skated with Stars on Ice for a year. I wish NBC would replace Tara and Johnny with Ryan Bradley or John Coughlin and any of the other retired ladies skaters!

    MSNBC

I'm confused too. Where can we discuss the shows on MSNBC and CNN on previouslytv? Should they be listed separately (e.g., Hardball in the "H's")? Can we set something up like that?
  21. I can easily make a pig of myself with Dan Dan Noodles ;>) Only discovered them last year but I'd heard of them forever.
  22. I have no idea. The recipe I used I found online (Addictive Asian Beef Slaw) and it says the recipe is by Stasty Cook. But under that recipe in the reviews was a comment from someone who was taught this salad by a Thai woman and that she used sliced NY strip steak. So that's what I did and it was good except for the Chinese rice vermicelli (I felt it needed some type of pasta) that were awful. I'm never buying any noodles made in China again - weird smell/weird taste. I'll use angel hair pasta instead or thin spaghetti. Next time I'll make with chicken (maybe toss in some large shrimp too). I put some Mirin in the soy sauce as I'm not a big fan of soy sauce. And I didn't use all the sesame oil (a little bit of that stuff goes a loooong way).
  23. Has anyone made Addictive Asian Beef Slaw (a/k/a Asian Crack Slaw)? I'm going to try making it for dinner. It calls for ground beef which is what I have but someone posted a review saying he/she seared NY strip steak over high heat, sliced super thin and squeezed lime juice over it. I'm going to Harris Teeter now...may look for some kind of steak cause I'm drooling thinking of that steak and lime juice.
  24. They did it again during the Free Dance this afternoon. I was yelling, "Pull back!". Sheesh.
  25. It's wonderful soup and those chicken sausage meatballs are out of this world. I couldn't find stars pasta so have used either mini penne or rings. I've got some chicken with cilantro sausages in the freezer and am thinking of making chicken "burgers" with it (sort of flattened version of those meatballs).
