  1. One thing I’ll say for the Brits, no one delivers snark as polished and precise as they do. I was dying when Elizabeth was mixing it up with Lord Critic and Phillip was critiquing Elizabeth’s hairstyle. I was not a fan of the stag hunt.
  2. No. I fought falling asleep most of the episode.
  3. Me. I think the suggestion of an affair is heavily implied, but we never really see Phillip in a situation that confirms it. I despise Mike. Elizabeth gets a lot of sympathy from me (more than I would have thought and I’m surprised). She really has the unenviable position of trying to be a “regular” wife and mother while maintaining the authority and dignity of the sovereign. I really enjoyed the first episode and I’m looking forward to binging on the season.
  4. It didn’t feel like that at all to me. There was plenty of tension between Claire and John Grey. I don’t know how she reacted in the book, but I got the feeling that show Claire sensed a strong bond between Jaime and LJG and wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. I loved her reaction at seeing John wearing the sapphire as a token of “friendship.” I agree.
  5. ? I love this comment. And I totally agree with the second bold part. I’m sick of pissy Claire. My advice is to (insert Frozen tune) Let. It. Go. The heroine of this story has worn out her welcome. ?
  6. Thanks, I didn’t make the connection and I don’t see the weirdness since the circumstances are not the same.
  7. I love little goats. I think they’re cute, so yeah. I feel your pain.
  8. Loved: - the observation from the peanut gallery that MacDubh’s wife turns up in the unlikeliest of places ?; - Yi Tien Cho’s dignity and the way he interacts with everyone; - Jamie giving Fergus his name and Fergus’s beaming reaction; - the beach reunion, I thought this was going to be a Jamie free episode for a minute there; - the final scene with Jamie and Claire. Not loving Marsali’s mouth. The coconut sidekick was crazy, as I assume the priest was. Mamacita kind of cracked me up being so hostile to Claire, and Claire was amazingly restrained seeing as she was so snotty on both ships when faced with beliefs/behavior that didn’t fall in line with her POV. The jungle scene maybe could have been shorter, but I sympathized with Claire’s plight (ants, snakes and an unmerciful sun beating down). I couldn’t help thinking that I may not have been as good at staying alive in her shoes.
  9. LOL Different strokes for different folks. I’m not a fan of the soap opera genre. YMMV of course. ?
  10. FFS Just say I’m glad I didn’t read this stuff. Way too much drama. I probably won’t be watching, if the show is still on, by then.
  11. This is very well said and I agree. I like the Caribbean beat. It’s subtle and let’s us know where the story is headed. I like it much better than the French they used last year. But then I hated that whole excursion to France.
  12. A few more things to add...Jamie sure looked yummy looking at Brianna’s pictures while wearing his specs and half open shirt. The secondary characters were all awesome, special shout out to the lad playing Elias. He was spectacular and so cute. I just wanted to pinch his cheeks. Even though a lot was going on I was getting tired of Claire. I’m sorry, but she no longer appeals to me, although I have no complaints about her being hesitant about jumping into the water from that height at night. I’m adoring Fergus and Marsali is a little more tolerable.
  13. Yeah and I’m realizing that I really don’t care much for the character at all.
  14. I don’t have much to say about this episode. There were some nice moments, but Marseli (sp?) annoyed me, I’m tired of Claire’s “situations” and I have no interest in life at sea. I wasn’t into Black Sails (I won’t even watch that for Rupert Penry-Jones and I think he’s kind of hot) because I don’t like pirates or stories set on the open seas, so having Outlander gleefully going there isn’t hitting the right notes with me. I’m digging Willoughby though. Too right about skanky whores turning up their noses at him.
  15. Bingo. It’s amazing to me that we don’t hesitate to call Jamie out (or my personal favorite, clutch the pearls) over the mere suggestion that he “cuff” some female, but Claire’s ACTUAL physical violence towards him raises nary an eyebrow. If we’re going to be offended, let’s be offended both ways.
  16. From Wikipedia..."Reflecting different national usages, cunt is described as "an unpleasant or stupid person" in the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, whereas Merriam-Webster states that it is a "usually disparaging and obscene" term for a woman or an "offensive way to refer to a woman" in the United States." And from the Urban Dictionary..."Top definition ... scottish guy 1: see that mad cunt over there ... Cunt is a term used mainly in the UK by bo th men and women as a term for stupid or idiotic, often ..." While I agree it is an unpleasant word to my American ears, I will concede that certain words have different connotations in other parts of the world. However, calling someone the 'n' word is universally offensive and I would not typically use the "c" word in the U.S.
  17. My interpretation of this scene is totally different, so I didn't have a problem with it. Claire was "adamant" until she wasn't, at which point she was an active participant. These are two very passionate people who fight hard and make up hard. Claire was never in any danger of Jamie taking her by force. It would never occur to him to do so, wife or not, IMO. Also, I don't think Claire slapped Jamie anywhere near as hard as she could have. How about Saoirse or Siobhan or Niamh? None of these names sound even remotely like the way they are spelled. I get it's a bit of a challenge to get them right, but it's kind of cheeky to knowingly spell a name incorrectly unless we're hating on the character and being snarky (i.e. Leg Hair), in which case I give a pass. ? Apologies in advance if I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill, but I'm a stickler for getting names right. I don't think it's hard to believe that a child that young wouldn't remember someone who showed up 20 years later claiming to have known him. I didn't remember people I went to high school with 20 years later unless we had a significant relationship or they stood out for some particular reason. ?
  18. Mainly testing out a new keyboard, but I will say that if a series runs longer than three books I’m done. Generally, I lose interest in more than three books because it seems to me most authors can’t sustain the story or the quality for more than that. (Also, why should one author suck up all my time?) And if said series is turned into a movie or television show, it’s pretty much guaranteed that I’ll never start (a) reading it or (b) return to it. I’m not going to spend years reading anything. I quit ASOIAF while reading the third book because it was just too much. IMO, DG should have wrapped up Claire and Jamie’s story years ago. Outlander is so poorly written (not the story itself, I’m talking about the actual mechanics of writing) there was no way in hell I was going to continue reading it.
  19. Nah, I’m going to be using the “shit boiling/stirring like God’s work” remark. That was awesome! ?
  20. Not to mention it was way easier to drop off the grid in the 1960s than it is now.
  21. Regarding Jenny, I love the TV character and I love the actress. I have absolutely no problem with Jenny’s behavior or attitude towards Claire. Jenny’s isn’t harboring just one grievance. Her feelings are complicated and she’s justified in the way she feels. I also love the fact that she doesn’t pull punches when she’s dealing with the fools around her. LOL (I jest when calling C & J fools for the most part.) But I think the main sticking point for Jenny was that she was hurt by Claire’s abandonment and lies. She had embraced Claire as a sister and she felt betrayed. I think Claire realized that in the end and I liked that last scene between them. I saw Jenny thaw considerably when Claire asked for a second chance. I enjoyed this episode right up to the bit where Claire starts talking about making a mistake and Ian gets spirited away. Didn’t like either one of those occurrences and based on the preview, I’m not looking forward to hijinks on the open sea or Jamaica.
  22. Love this turn of a phrase. Will definitely use going forward. ?
